The multiple stakeholders of cricket in Barbados have governed the development of cricket. Over the last 30 years the sport has been on a steady decline evidenced by the low attendance at games and the number of teams and individuals playing the sport. At a time when the sport has been growing at the international level, the decline in the fortunes of the sport in Barbados had led to a climate of mistrust and blame apportioning, which can only lead to further decay. This explanatory case study drawing from 2 focus groups and 15 individual interviews examined the views and perceptions of players, media personnel, officials, administrators, fans and concessionaires, as to the state of the sport, the factors that have contributed to that state and the role of the stakeholders in the process. Data analyzed using thick analysis methods revealed that the stakeholders believed that sport was in decline in Barbados and changes in the social and community structures, competition from other sports, unclear roles and uncooperative relations of stakeholders were key factors that acted against the development of the sport. The implications for positive social change are directed at the collaborative role of stakeholders that places the general good beyond individual pursuits and the need to change the current methods of governance. Ⓒ Hitotsubashi University SPORT, NATIONALISM AND GLOBALIZATION: RELEVANCE, IMPACT, CONSEQUENCES ＊ ALAN BAIRNER Relevance International Sport At the most basiclevel of analysis, it is easy to see the extent to whichsport, arguably more than any other form of social activity in the modern world, facilitates flag waving and the playing of national anthems, both formally at moments such as medal ceremonies and informally through the activities of fans. Indeed there are many political nationalists who fear that by acting as such a visible medium for overt displays of national sentiment, sport can actually blunt the edge of serious political debate. No matter how one views the grotesque caricatures of national modes of behavior and dress that so often provide the colorful backdrop to major sporting events, one certainly cannot escape the fact that nationalism, in some form or another, and sport are closely linked. It is important to appreciate, however, that the precise nature of their relationship varies dramatically from one political setting to another and that, as a consequence, it is vital that we are alert to a range of different conceptual issues. For example, like the United Nations, sportʼs global governing bodies, such as the International OlympicCommittee or the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), consist almost exclusively of representatives not of nations but rather of sovereign nation states. It is also worth noting that pioneering figures in the organization of international sport, such as Baron Pierre de Coubertin who established the modern Olympics in 1896, commonly revealed a commitment to both internationalism and the interests of their own nation states.

    Evolution of Test Cricket in Last Six Decades A Univariate Time Series Analysis Mayank Nagpal Sumit Mishra 1 Introduction We intend to analyse the structural changes in the average annual run-rate, i.e., how many runs are scored in each over, a measure of how much bat dominates the ball or how aggressively teams bat. Test cricket is the traditional format of the game. It is considered to be a snail-form of the game when we compare it with newer versions of the game, viz, ODI and T20 .A test cricket match lasting 5 days is apparently a lot less exciting for some than an ODI which lasts for eight hours or a T20 match which is matter of two-three hours. The general view is that with the advent of new technology, pitches that are more batsmen-friendly and craving for result in each game, the average run rate seems to have increased. Some analysts attribute this change to the emergence of newer formats and other innovations in the game. The question we are trying to answer is about whether these factors like those mentioned below had any significant impact on the game. I am chastened Sir, not only by the enormity of the task that confronts me as Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, as it does indeed the entire Government and people of Barbados, but equally as well by the massive responsibility which has been imposed on us to safely navigate our country through this most challenging period of the country’s history.
