J.E.Afr.Nat.Hist.Soc. Vol.XXV No.2 (111) June 1965 OBSERVATIONS ON VERREAUX'S EAGLE OWL Bubo lacteus (Temminck) IN KENYA By L.H. Brown This paper brings together scattered observations made in various parts of Kenya between 1947 and 1964. Little seems to have been pub• lished on the behaviour and habits of this owl, so that these details on breeding habits and food may be of value. The majority of the observations were made at a breeding site in Karen, 13 miles from Nairobi, in August-September 1963, but some observations were also made in Embu district, and at scattered localities elsewhere in Kenya. Verreaux's Eagle Owl is quite a common bird in Kenya, though not often observed for long. It appears to be an inhabitant of forest edges near open country, and is specially fond of strips of riverine Acacia forest. In such localities its deep hoot proclaims its presence soon after dark, and often by day as well. Pairs of the species are nearly always to be found roosting close together, sometimes sitting on the same branch. When they start to hunt in the early hours of the night they move further apart, but keep in touch by calls, which make them easy to locate. The voice of one sex, probably the female, is deeper than that of the other. II Voice. The normal call is a very deep double hoot "oop-poop", almost as deep as the call of the Ground Hornbill Bucorvus leadbeateri (Vigors). It can be confused with the call of that species, particularly as both these birds are likely to roost in, and call from, riverine Acacia forest at dusk and dawn. -

Biodiversity Observations http://bo.adu.org.za An electronic journal published by the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town The scope of Biodiversity Observations consists of papers describing observations about biodiversity in general, including animals, plants, algae and fungi. This includes observations of behaviour, breeding and flowering patterns, distributions and range extensions, foraging, food, movement, measurements, habitat and colouration/plumage variations. Biotic interactions such as pollination, fruit dispersal, herbivory and predation fall within the scope, as well as the use of indigenous and exotic species by humans. Scopus 34: 1–23, January 2015 Systematic and taxonomic issues concerning some East African bird species, notably those where treatment varies between authors Donald A. Turner and David J. Pearson Summary The taxonomy of various East African bird species is discussed. Fourteen of the non- passerines and forty-eight of the passerines listed in Britton (1980) are considered, with reference to treatments by various subsequent authors. Twenty-three species splits are recommended from the treatment in Britton (op. cit.), and one lump, the inclusion of Jackson’s Hornbill Tockus jacksoni as a race of T. deckeni. Introduction With a revision of Britton (1980) now nearing completion, this is the first of two pa- pers highlighting the complexities that surround some East African bird species. All appear in Britton in one form or another, but since that landmark publication our knowledge of East African birds has increased considerably, and with the advances in DNA sequencing, our understanding of avian systematics and taxonomy is con- tinually moving forward. A tidal wave of phylogenetic studies in the last decade has revolutionized our understanding of the higher-level relationships of birds. Taxa pre- viously regarded as quite distantly related have been brought together in new clas- sifications and some major groups have been split asunder (Knox 2014). As a result we are seeing the familiar order of families and species in field guides and checklists plunged into turmoil. The speed at which molecular papers are being published continues at an unprec- edented rate. We must remember, however, that while many molecular results may indicate a relationship, they do not necessarily prove one. -

Chapter 5 Geographic variation in breeding seasonality and primary moult parameters in Cape Weavers, Southern Masked Weavers and Southern Red Bishops in South Africa 97 98 Geographic variation in breeding seasonality and primary moult parameters in Cape Weavers, Southern Masked Weavers and Southern Red Bishops in South Africa Abstract The Southern Masked Weaver Ploceus velatus expanded its range into the south- western part of the Western Cape, and here it has advanced its peak breeding and moult onset by one month relative to other areas, but is still a month behind that of the Cape Weaver P. capensis. Peak breeding in the Southern Red Bishop Euplectes orix is the same as that of the two Ploceus species in KwaZulu-Natal, and retarded by one or two months in the other regions. Southern Masked Weavers use trees and reeds equally early in different parts of South Africa. Variation in start and end of breeding depends largely on rainfall. In the three ploceids, primary moult started in the same month that the last eggs are laid. For the Cape Weaver moult started progressively later along the coast from the Western Cape to KwaZulu-Natal, and duration of primary moult varied from 3.3 months to 4.1 months. In Southern Masked Weavers moult started between 27 December and 22 March, while duration of moult was 2.2 to 2.8 months. In Southern Red Bishops moult started early in the Western Cape (13 December), and much later in the other regions. Duration of moult varied from 2.4 to 3.1 months.
