Lausanne Child sex rife in Thailand Congress calls for action

The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization closed in Cape Town with a ringing call to the global church. The Congress, perhaps the widest and most diverse gathering of Christians ever held in the history of the Church, drew 4,000 selected participants from 198 nations. Organisers extended its reach into over 650 GlobaLink sites in 91 countries and drew 100,000 unique visits to its website from 185 countries during the week of the Congress. “Our vision and hope was fi rstly for a ringing affirmation of the uniqueness of Christ and the truth of the biblical gospel; and a clear statement on evangelism and the mission of the church — all rooted in Scripture,” Lindsay Brown, Lausanne Movement International Director, said in his closing address. “The evangelical church has rightly put an emphasis on bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to every people group, but we have perhaps been a little weaker in our attempts to apply biblical principles to every area of society, and to public policy: to the media; to business; to government. We need to engage deeply with all human endeavour — and with the ideas which shape it.”

Military not required Commenting on a video showing Papuans being tortured by members of the armed forces, the head of the Baptist Church in Papua called on the Indonesian government to withdraw all the security forces who are now conducting military operations in Puncak Jaya because such activities cannot possibly help to make the local communities feel safe and secure. Sokrates Sofyan Yoman said the security forces claim that they are present in the area to make people feel safe, but the video showing Papuans being tortured in a remote part of Papua shows that the Papuan people are being intimidated with actions that are occurring on a regular basis throughout the territory.

Bhutan’s National Assembly banned open practice of non-Buddhist and non-Hindu religions by passing resolutions in 1969 and in 1979. The Boy Jesus at the Temple Luke 2 When Jesus was twelve years old, he went with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. When the Feast was over, they went home. But Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t know about it. They thought he was in their company, so Mary and Joseph travelled for a day. Then they began to look for him. When they couldn’t fi nd him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days, Mary and Joseph found Jesus in the temple. He was sitting with the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Jesus was amazed at his understanding and answers. When Jesus’ parents saw him, they were surprised. His mother said, “Son why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But Mary and Joseph did not understand what he was saying. Then Jesus went home with Mary and Joseph and obeyed them. He grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men.

sport&youth Basketball connects in Surabaya

Assistant coach Jess Van Schie could hardly believe her eyes. The team of State Basketball League players was being mobbed by school kids — after a training session. The team was in Surabaya, the main city of Indonesia’s East Java Province. They were part of a goodwill tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of the signing of the sister state agreement between East Java and Western Australia. The Governor of WA, Dr Ken Michael and three WA State members of Parliament were also part of the West Australian contingent. The SBL appointed three-time SBL Championship coach (Lakeside Lightning) and current Wildcats assistant coach Andy Stewart to lead the group for the trip. The team comprised of Perth Wildcats Squad members Joel Wagner and Jarrod Balcombe; Ryan Sofoulis, Ty Harrelson, Lordan Franich, Michael Vigar and Lakeside’s rookie Simon Lokan. They played two invitational games at the DBL Arena in Surabaya on 2 and 3 October. The arena was packed with more than 5,000 people at each game. “I’ve been heavily involved in several short-term trips to the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and outback Australia, so I pushed hard for us to also visit a school while we were in Indonesia.
