WISSER: The Organization of Knowledge and Bibliographic Classification in Nineteenth-Century America (under the direction of Dr. Paul Solomon) Bibliographic classification is culturally bound. This research examines the classification systems created for social libraries in the first half of the nineteenth century in the United States. Social libraries are defined as institutions that have voluntary membership and are dependent on membership fees. Seventeen classified catalogs were examined and their classification systems compared. This study explored the underlying warrant of these classification systems and compared the systems to Francis Bacon’s organization of knowledge as published in The Advancement of Learning to identify the potential influence of the underlying warrant on the classification structures. Contextual influences of individual libraries and larger sociocultural influences on religion, fiction, and science were also considered. Of the 17 classification systems in the sample, 13 were comparable to Bacon’s organization of knowledge, although the order of classes was not followed. Religion classes demonstrated a shift away from primacy, while the fiction class solidified its place in the libraries. Finally, changes in science classes demonstrate the immediacy of the environment on the development of systems. Further research is suggested on the utility of warrant as a component of discourse as well as its possible limitations. iii ACKOWLEDGEMENTS Writing a dissertation is both a solitary and a collaborative event. This scenario gives rise to problems of biases in representation, such as gender issues, dichotomy categorizations and lack of cultural warrant and hospitality. References on women’s issues are still scarce in the literature, which makes it necessary to analyze to what extent the terms related to these particular issues are inserted in the tools in a biased way. This study aimed to verify the presence of the terms female, femininity, feminism, feminist, maternal, motherly, woman/women within the following Brazilian indexing languages: Subject Terminology of the National Library (STNL), University of Sao Paulo Subject Headings (USPSH), Brazilian Senate Subject Headings (BSSH) and Law Decimal Classification (LDC). Each term identified in the first three alphabetical languages generated a registration card containing both its descriptors and non-descriptors, as well as scope notes, USE/UF, RT, and BT/NT relationships. Hallows** Ms. Hallows investigates the widespread use of the Library of Congress Classification system in U.S. law libraries and the difficulties it can present in some circumstances. To address these problems, she proposes that smaller law libraries that do not par- ticipate in a bibliographic utility may benefit from an in-house classification scheme. Introduction ¶1 At its most basic level, the human impulse to classify emerges from our strong desire to know what to expect. New things that resemble familiar things need little or no further examination. Quite simply, “we know what to expect of a dog or a banana, since they are similar to dogs and bananas we already know.”1 ¶2 Classification also provides a means of organization. One of the most fun- damental concepts learned in a library and information science program is that we organize to retrieve; therefore, classification is not only helpful but also necessary if we are to benefit from the information we acquire and produce. Further, we may also classify to facilitate browsing and therefore discovery—even in an online envi- ronment such as the library catalog,2 though physical collections are the focus of this article. ¶3 In an increasingly digital world, classification may seem like a quaint notion from the past. In a database, it is unnecessary to store records using any particular system, as long as those records relevant to a search are displayed or sorted in a useful way.

    _________________________________ SYMPOSIUM SCHOLAR _________________________________ REINVENTING DISCOVERY: PATENT LAW’S CHARACTERIZATIONS OF AND INTERVENTIONS UPON SCIENCE † ARIEL SIMON This Article concerns the sway of intellectual property law over scientists and their institutions. Patent monopolies encourage scientists and innovators to invent, but we rarely ask “as opposed to doing what?” I argue that the “what” is, at least some of the time, “basic” (nonpatentable) scientific research and discovery. This Article questions the viability of the discovery/invention distinction in patent law and considers the consequences that it has long had on the scientific enterprise. This Article has four aims: (1) to re-engage a once-vibrant conversation about what, if any, property rights should inhere to “basic” scientific research products at the margins of existing categories of intellectual property law; (2) to contrast patent law’s consequential and idiosyncratic characterizations of “ba- sic” and “applied” science with those of other disciplines; (3) to highlight the distortions that patents foist upon the scientific enterprise by attaching monopo- lies to some research products but not others—affecting the distribution of scien- tific talent, the focus of research, the investment priorities of public and private actors, and so on; and (4) to reconsider the government’s approach to basic- research funding. In the United States, public libraries have been woven into the social and spatial fabric of neighborhood life, whether urban, suburban, or rural, and they enjoy immense popularity: According to a 2014 study from the Pew Research Center (2014), 54 percent of people in the United States use a public library each year, 72 percent of people live in a household with a regular library user, and libraries are viewed as important community resources by 91 percent of people.
