Following their debut on October 2009 with their first single I Want You Back, the girls originally planned for their comeback on February 2010. Secret’s agency TS Entertainment stated, “Because it is their first mini album, the girls put in great amount of effort.” ►►Secret’s Sunhwa gets criticized for being…stupid? Sunhwa from the group “Secret” is known for her cuteness and laughter and apparently…stupidity on-air In the most recent episode of the show “Invincible Youth”, Secret’s Sunhwa showed off the fact that she has been studying a lot. Then Kim Shin Young told her to prove it. The idol said that IT (Information Technology) stood for the Internet. She then continued that the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) was FIFA (soccer association). Kim Shin Young then said, “Who yelled, ‘I don’t like the communist party!’?” Sunhwa didn’t even answer the question but rather said, “Doesn’t everyone hate that?” Kim Shin Young also asked her who created Children’s Day. Sunhwa randomly said, “Woman. Netizens commented, “Does she think a program is a joke? How could you not know Bang Jung Hwan, the person that created Children’s Day? That’s ridiculous.” and “ She went beyond stupidity and looked like she didn’t like her country. ” ►►New Releases: 02/21/10. SBS Inkigayo live performances are added! The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation By Jisung Catherine Kim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Kristen Whissel, Chair Professor Mark Sandberg Professor Elaine Kim Fall 2013 The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation © 2013 by Jisung Catherine Kim Abstract The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation by Jisung Catherine Kim Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media University of California, Berkeley Professor Kristen Whissel, Chair In The Intimacy of Distance, I reconceive the historical experience of capitalism’s globalization through the vantage point of South Korean cinema. According to world leaders’ discursive construction of South Korea, South Korea is a site of “progress” that proves the superiority of the free market capitalist system for “developing” the so-called “Third World.” Challenging this contention, my dissertation demonstrates how recent South Korean cinema made between 1998 and the first decade of the twenty-first century rearticulates South Korea as a site of economic disaster, ongoing historical trauma and what I call impassible “transmodernity” (compulsory capitalist restructuring alongside, and in conflict with, deep-seated tradition). Made during the first years after the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the films under consideration here visualize the various dystopian social and economic changes attendant upon epidemic capitalist restructuring: social alienation, familial fragmentation, and widening economic division.

  • Writing in Grey Joseph Schwartze UCCS Honors Program
Writing in Grey Joseph Schwartze UCCS Honors Program A Darker World The stories in this section look at the darker parts of our world. Fantasy is unnecessary to see depictions of true evil; it exists in day to day life. The mind does not have to warp itself in perverted defense mechanisms to see darkness in our average lives. These stories examine the consequences of the bad events in our world, from the lasting effects on a single person to the terrible choices some people are forced to make. We do not always know the darkness that surrounds us; only an unremarkable symbol might be the reminder. Other times, the darkness around us can be from our own choices, our own accomplishments, and we must live with that stink forever. These stories explore the grey in our world and how the black and white can mix into unfortunate realities. Choices in the Dark Clarissa took the shot, and she savored the burning sensation in her throat. She needed it, the pain. She needed the numbness that followed even more. Her eyes closed, and when she opened them, some 20-something college boy sat next to her. He was dressed like a preppy frat boy, with his khakis and a light blue polo shirt. She knew the drill. A pretty smile painted her features, and she leaned against the counter while she waited for him to say something.
