Sherri Brown / Daily News Snapshot During a Camp Viola reunion, Barbara Bledsoe Gray, 74, recalled her experiences as a first-time camper when she was about 9 years old. Gray had never been away from home when she and her brother were invited to attend the camp. Except for being homesick, she enjoyed the camp where she had kitchen duty, learned table manners, attend- ed morning Bible devotions and did arts and crafts. ‘They Gray kept us busy all the time,’ she said.’It’s a beautiful place.’ The recent event was a reunion and fundraiser for the camp in Mountville that is run by volunteers from local churches. Kay Carlisle, a volunteer and Camp Viola board member, helped out at the grill for the event. Ramirez, a two-time All-Star and last year’s NL batting champion, wasn't in manager Fredi Gonzalez's starting lineup against Arizona. On Mon- day night, he accidentally kicked a ball and then lightly jogged after it, al- lowing two runs to score. “It’s his team. He can do whatever,” Ramirez said, mixing in an expletive. “There’s nothing I can do about it. That’s OK. He doesn't understand that. He never played in the big leagues,” he said. Responded Gonzalez: “He’s right, but I know how to play the game.” “I played six years in the minor leagues and I know what it takes to play this game and I know the effort it takes to play this game,” he said. It seemed unlikely Ramirez will apologize. “We got a lot of people dogging it after ground balls,” he said. “They don’t apologize.” The trouble for Ramirez started in the first inning Monday night after he fouled a ball off his left shin and was tended to by a trainer. He grounded into a double play and did not run full speed down the line. Ramirez’s costly mis- play came the next inning after Tony Abreu's looper fell near him in short left field. Ramirez booted the ball about 100 feet toward the left-field corner and slowly chased it. I The pres- NASCAR: sure was on Jeff Burton’s pit crew at Darlington Raceway, where the vet- eran driver was in posi- tion for a victory. But bad communication led to a botched final stop – Burton ran over his air hose and had to return to the pits to serve a penalty – and he was immediately taken out of contention for the win. Unfortunately for Burton and his Richard Childress Racing crew, the mistake also cost him an automatic berth in this weekend's $1 million annual All-Star race. The gaffe highlighted just how important pit crews are to race teams, and was heartbreaking because it happened to a group that knows its a good crew: The No. 31 team is the defending champions of the annual Pit Crew Challenge. They’ll try to defend their title in Wednesday night's Challenge, a skills competition that crews take tremendous pride in attempting to win. “I’ve been a part of other championships. This pit crew championship ranks up there with other cham- pionships I won,” said Matt Clark, who oversees the pit crews at RCR. “To have won it and been part of it since inception has been a great part of my career. If I had to sell all my rings, that'd be the last one to go.” The crews for the top 24 teams in the standings as of May 17 participate in the Challenge, which awards $70,650 to the winners. Additional $10,000 prizes are awarded to individual winners in skills competi- tions for front and rear tire changers, the jack man, the gas man and the catch-can man. The team portion of the competition begins with head-to-head single-elimi- nations among teams. In the quarterfinals, the highest seeded teams still remaining get to choose their opponents for the head-to-head matches.
