However, its meaning lies not in what it has to convey, but in what it has to say in itself.” The “meaning” of posters, what makes them special and leads to their being admired many years after their creation, is the subject of this publication and the accompanying exhibition. We consider posters as an artistic genre that has its own history, its own artists, and its own designers.     Immersion Into Noise Critical Climate Change Series Editors: Tom Cohen and Claire Colbrook The era of climate change involves the mutation of systems beyond 20th century anthropomorphic models and has stood, until recent- ly, outside representation or address. Understood in a broad and critical sense, climate change concerns material agencies that im- pact on biomass and energy, erased borders and microbial inven- tion, geological and nanographic time, and extinction events. The possibility of extinction has always been a latent figure in textual production and archives; but the current sense of depletion, decay, mutation and exhaustion calls for new modes of address, new styles of publishing and authoring, and new formats and speeds of distri- bution. As the pressures and re-alignments of this re-arrangement occur, so must the critical languages and conceptual templates, po- litical premises and definitions of ‘life.’ There is a particular need to publish in timely fashion experimental monographs that redefine the boundaries of disciplinary fields, rhetorical invasions, the in- terface of conceptual and scientific languages, and geomorphic and geopolitical interventions. This was less than three years after Siegfried Bing had transformed his shop in Paris into the new and prestigious Salon de L'Art Nouveau. Important artist- designers in the Netherlands immediately recognized Arts and Crafts as the first Dutch gallery for contemporary decorative arts. The gallery presented handcrafted furniture, textiles, ceramics and metalwork of high quality alongside paintings and sculptures. Arts and Crafts only lasted until July 1904, whereas Bing's gallery closed in March 1905. But during the six years of its existence, the gallery played an important role in the world of Dutch applied arts by showing works by Dutch and foreign modern designers and by stimulating debate about the path the Dutch revival of the applied arts should take.

Whether it is the date for an upcoming performance or an alert about a missing person, posters offer quick access to information throughout our daily lives. However, during the years of WWI and WWII, posters played a much darker role. During the beginning of WWI in 1914, the era of the propaganda poster had begun. Both the Allied Forces and the Central Powers started creating public posters that would engage the people in the war. Besides an attempt to validate their war engagement, these posters were used to promote enlistment, encourage conservation of food and resources among the people, raise funds for the military, and boost the overall public morale. Little did designers know that their posters would be the difference between victory and defeat. The Beginning of Central Propaganda Unsurprisingly, the Central Powers had quite a different approach to design than the Allied Forces. The poster design of the Central Powers was primarily inspired by Lucian Bernhard (figure 1) and the simplicity of the Plakatstil style (seen in figures 2). Bernhard, largely known for his influence and engagement in Plakatstil, was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1883, originally named Emil Kahn. Primarily self-taught, Bernhard was a Graphic Designer, Typographer, Professor, Interior Designer, and Fine-Artist. After years of cooperating with various owners, then renting the property on the outskirts of the city, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar was able to purchase the historic residence with the support of the Ilse Burghardt Foundation. Hohe Pappeln was given its name by Thyl, van de Velde’s only son. He and his twin sister Thylla were four years old in 1908 when they moved with their parents and three older sisters into the “house under the tall poplars”; the voices of the five van de Velde children still seem to echo in the garden (fig.
