See also repository copyright: re-use policy: http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/policies.html#copy EMPTY ADMIRATION: ROBERT LEWIS DABNEY’S EXPOSITORY HOMILETIC A Thesis submitted to Middlesex University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Russell St. John Middlesex University Supervised at London School of Theology November, 2018 Abstract Russell St. John, “Empty Admiration: Robert Lewis Dabney’s Expository Homiletic,” Doctor of Philosophy, Middlesex University/London School of Theology, 2018. ----- This thesis argues that while American homiletician Robert Lewis Dabney (1820-1898) crafted a robust expository homiletical theory, his weak classroom pedagogy and failure personally to practice expository preaching undermined his theory, and Dabney predominantly equipped and influenced his seminary students to preach the very topical sermons that his expository theory abjured. Chapter 1 provides a biographical sketch, which acquaints the reader with Dabney’s life and work, demonstrating his historical and homiletical significance. Chapter 2 critiques prior evaluations of Dabney’s homiletic and preaching ministry, demonstrating the need for research into his classroom pedagogy and distinct structure for expository sermons. It also identifies an errant interpretation of Dabney’s homiletical legacy, which Chapter 6 corrects. Chapter 3 describes Dabney’s robust expository theory and identifies his distinct structure for expository sermons. It thereby exposes a caveat by which Dabney and his students preached topical sermons upon single verses or clauses of text—a practice that Dabney, in theory, forbade. Chapter 4 analyzes Dabney’s classroom pedagogy by examining sermon manuscripts that Dabney labeled “Exercises,” which offered replicable sermon templates to his students. By means of these exercises, Dabney primarily equipped his students to preach topical sermons on isolated verses of Scripture rather than the expository sermons that his theory admired. Chapter 5 chronicles and quantifies Dabney’s failure to practice expository preaching, demonstrating that he predominantly preached topical sermons on isolated verses of Scripture, thereby highlighting his infidelity to his homiletical theory, while also showing that Dabney’s stance toward the Scripture was not that of a herald as his theory claimed, but rather a craftsman. Offering a brief biographical sketch to acquaint the reader with the outlines of Dabney’s life and ministerial labors,1 this chapter demonstrates that Robert Dabney is a consequential figure in American Presbyterian history, worthy of ongoing attention. Throughout his lifetime, Dabney proved dutiful, theologically and socially conservative, and devoted to unchanging principles. He also demonstrated lifelong, inveterate racism, mixing the chaff of his personal support for slavery and segregation with the wheat of his homiletical and theological labors. Over the course of five decades of teaching, writing, and preaching, Robert Dabney profoundly shaped Presbyterianism in the American South, and his legacy demands continuing research.2 The Plan of this Chapter This chapter describes Dabney’s life and work in five stages. The first section traces Dabney from birth until he enrolled at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. Dabney INTRODUCTION Stonewall Jackson General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, born in the mountains of what is now West Virginia on Jan. 21, 1824, ranks among the most valiant soldiers and skillful tacticians in all military history. After graduating from West Point, Jackson served with distinction in the Mexi- can War and then returned to Virginia to teach natural philosophy and artillery tactics at Virginia Military Institute for 10 years. While in Lexington Jackson lived an exemplary life, serving as a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church and founding and teaching in a Sunday School for slaves. With the war Jackson entered the service of the Confederacy. He was given his famous nick-name on July 21, 1861, at the first battle of Manassas. Confederate troops had been put to flight by a powerful Union advance. General Bernard Bee of South Carolina, seeking desperately to stem the tide, saw Jackson and his troops standing firm. Bee cried, “There stands Jackson like a stone wall. Rally behind the Virginians!” With that stand the battle turned from a Confederate defeat to a Federal rout, and from that day forward Jackson’s was known as the Stone-wall Bri- gade. Of this engagement Jackson wrote to his wife on July 22nd, “Yesterday we fought a great battle, and gained a great victory, for which all the glory is due to God alone.”1 In 1863, while defeating Federal forces at Chancellorsville, Jackson was accidentally shot by his own men and died eight days later.

This study attempts to reveal how this lack of understanding appeared in the 19th century American slavery problem by studying two Presbyterian leaders, Robert Dabney and Charles Hodge. Both discussed that the liberation of slaves should take place someday at a future point in time. However, when the American Civil War broke out, they took radically different position. In this study, we will argue that without genuine understanding, everyone will not bend their arguments in their own culture and eventually fall into the contradictions and ironies of self-justification.

Biographical Note: Robert Lewis Dabney (1820‐1898) was a Presbyterian theologian and educator in Virginia and Texas. He earned his degree in theology from Union Theological Seminary at Hampden‐Sydney in 1846, and in 1853 was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity. He served as both the chair of ecclesiastical history and polity (1853‐1859) and the chair of systematic and polemic theology (1859‐1883) at Union Theological Seminary. During the Civil War, Dabney served as both a Confederate Army chaplain and the chief‐of‐staff for Stonewall Jackson. In 1883 he accepted the chair of mental and moral philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. In the prosecution of this office he quickly arrested all residents of Nashville he deemed threatening to national unity. Johnson targeted the political leaders of the community including city council members and newspaper editors. He then targeted the ministers of Nashville. In his initial sweep, he found six ministers in the city who were expressing pro-Confederate sentiments from the pulpit. Johnson demanded they swear an oath of loyalty as a group. The ministers, Robert B.C. Howell, Samuel Baldwin, Collins Elliott, Edmund Sehon, William Sawrie, and Reuben Ford considered the oath and rejected it.

James Rufus Rickmond was born 16 February 1849 in Scottsburg, Halifax County, Virginia,1 and died 20 January 1931 in Dan River, Pittsylvania County.2 He married Mary Elizabeth Crowder on 25 January 1871 in Halifax County.3 She was born 13 March 1853 in the same county,4 and died 7 April 1931 in Spencer, Rowan County, North Carolina.5 JAMES RUFUS’S PARENTAGE James Rufus, or Rufus, as he was known to his family, was born before civil birth registration began in Virginia.6 Absent a birth record, the following independently-created evidence confirms his parentage: • On 15 March 1884 his father, H. J. Rickman, made a will naming Rufus as one of his six sons.7 • Rufus’s marriage record identifies his parents as H. J. and Harriet A. “Ruckman.” Rufus likely supplied the information for the record.8 1.     Robert Lewis Dabney and the Westminster standards: A Commemoration This year marks the hundredth anniversary of the death of Southern Presbyterian minister and theologian, Robert Lewis Dabney. In the past century he has been both praised and excoriated for his role as spokesperson of Old South conservatism. In academic circles he has been remembered chiefly for his brief role as Confederate General Stonewall Jackson's Chief of Staff, for his attacks on public education and the excesses of Northern capitalism, and for his unapologetic defence of American slavery. Yet as one recent biographer has stated, 'Any attempt to understand Dabney ... is seriously handicapped if it does not take into account the central importance of theology in his thought' , and for Dabney true theology is that of the Westminster Standards. 1 In the last year of his life, he himself celebrated the anniversary of the productions of that venerated Assembly. 2 As we commemorate his death, it is well that we remember the character and contents of that document which he himself commemorated throughout his life. For Dabney, the Confession of Faith, and all creeds for that matter, are useful only so far as they accurately represent the teaching of Scripture. Creeds are summary statements of what Scripture describes in greater depth and detail. Dabney has often been accused of elevating the Confession of Faith to a status of infallibility on a par with the Scriptures, yet it is clear that Dabney himself always qualifies his high regard for the Confession. Dabney states the relationship this way: The Southern Presbyterian Church wholly disclaims everything except the holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as either an infallible or authoritative rule of faith and practice.

    The Coming of the LORD: An Analysis of Religious Rhetoric in the American Civil War Drake Smith Campbell University Faculty Mentor: Jaclyn Stanke Campbell University ABSTRACT Propaganda has always served an important function in warfare. In the American Civil War, much of the propaganda of both the United States and the Confederacy utilized religion or religious rhetoric. A key aspect of the religiosity of both sides in the war was the notion of an all-powerful Providence that guided history as He saw ft, and while it was a powerful source of encouragement early in the war, as the death toll rose, it posed problems for many people, especially Southerners. The sermons and speeches delivered during the war demonstrate that political and religious rhetoric intermingled freely in churches, and show that political leaders eagerly claimed the favor of God on their causes. Each nation’s claims to divine favor refected distinctive views of God. The Union and Confederacy alike came to defne themselves through religion as well as politics, and they defned their opponents in the same ways. The North held itself to be a crusading force, striking down godless rebels who sought to overthrow rightful au- thority. Relatively few receive credit for significantly affecting the course of human history and obtain appropriate remembrance in accounts of the past. For those whose memories endure, due to the unrepeatable nature of past events, history remains vulnerable to the corrupting influence of myths and legends that distort historical realities. Confederate Lieutenant General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson (1824-1863) serves as a prime example of an historical figure, who, though deserving of his place in history, has been subsequently distorted by biographers and memory. The following discussion largely passes over the general’s already well-analyzed military career, and explores other factors that contributed to his incredible rise in fame to the exalted position of southern hero. Topics include Jackson’s well-documented eccentricities, the manner of his death, the social climate of the post-war South, and his subsequent treatment by early biographers.

Biographical Note: Robert Lewis Dabney (1820-1898) was a Southern Presbyterian theologian and educator. He was born in Virginia in 1820 and studied theology at Union Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1847 and served several churches in Virginia before becoming a professor at Union Theological Seminary. In 1883, he moved to Austin, Texas to serve as a professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy at the University of Texas. He was a cofounder of the Austin School of Theology, now Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and was a professor there from 1884-1895. In addition to his work regarding theology, Dabney briefly served as a chaplain to the Stonewall Brigade due to his marriage to Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s wife’s first cousin. He authored an early biography on Jackson and lectured frequently about the Civil War and the Confederacy until his death in 1898. Scope and Contents: The Robert Lewis Dabney publications collection is an artificial collection compiled in 1993 by former Stitt librarian Genevieve Luna, together with additional donations. This collection consists of six inches of photocopies of published writings by Dabney from various sources, a published book, as well as several reviews of his writings by other authors. Dabney’s works generally concern Southern Presbyterianism during the Civil War era or the Confederacy and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.
