Parish Clustering ~ Planning for the Future Thank you to all who came along to the Parish Meeting on the evening of the 29th July. The feedback from this meeting has now been compiled and details are available at the back of the church. Please do take a copy. Please be assured that nothing is yet set in stone, but at this moment in time we do need to start looking at the long term outlook for all our parishes and the fact that there will be fewer priests to be able to run all the Masses that are currently available in our area. St Augustine’s African Choir next Sunday the African Community at St Augustine’s will lead the singing at the 11am Mass. John Bradburne Memorial Society There will be a 40th year Anniversary Mass and exhibition on Saturday 21st September 2019 at Westminster Cathedral at 2.30pm to celebrate the life and work of John Bradburne, whose cause for beatification as the first 20th century English saint is moving ahead this year. John spent years seeking God from the Malayan jungles in World War Two to wanderings in Europe and Israel, until he finally found his true place in the world caring for leprosy patients at the Mutemwa Leprosy Settlement in Zimbabwe. Here he dedicated his life to God and to those suffering from leprosy until his death on the 5th September 1979. For more information, please refer to www.johnbradburne.com. The Cathedral is a place for quiet prayer and reflection - all are most welcome to take advantage of this oasis of peace in our busy world. Today: It is hard to imagine Jesus telling anyone to “Go away; I do not know you”. However, it does seem just, if we consider that these people actually had every opportunity to know him, and they chose to neglect every moment of grace that came their way. Jesus told his disciples, when he sent them out to preach “If people in a town do not receive you, shake the dust of their town from your feet, and go on your way…..” They were offered a gift and they chose to reject it. A wealthy man lost his wife when his only child was very young. A Housekeeper came to work in the house, and to take care of the boy. The boy died tragically at twenty years of age. The old man was without kith or kin, and he died of a broken heart some years later. There was no heir to his enormous estate, nor could one be found. There was a will but that was in the hands of the solicitors and there was an auction to dispose of the personal effects of the mansion. On the day of the auction the whole town had gathered for there were a lot of nice things to be sold including lots of very nice paintings and antiques etc. The old housekeeper attended the auction, not because she could buy anything, but her grief was too strong to keep her away. The auction began with the selling of a picture – a picture of the old man’s son – no one seem to want it and so it was bought by the old housekeeper – her few pence was enough to buy it. She had loved him as her own and now she was delighted to get his picture. She brought the picture home, and proceeded to take the picture from the frame. When she opened the back of the frame some papers fell out – they looked important so she brought them to her solicitor. Her solicitor looked at her and laughed, saying “You sure have landed on your feet this time. The old gentleman has left all his estate and all his money to the person who loved his son enough to buy this picture”. Loving the son got her the lot! The message is the same today: “Whoever loves the Son gets it ALL”. (MB) Robert Gower This weekend is our Organist, Robert Gower’s, last Mass as he heads for pastures new in Berwick-upon-Tweed, and this weekend we also welcome back the Cathedral Choir who have comeback early from their summer break to join Robert for the 11.15am Mass. We are extremely grateful to Robert for his dedication and outstanding musicianship which he has shown throughout his tenure, not just through his imaginative hymn accompaniment and extemporisations, but also introducing a whole range of organ music to serve the Mass, and writing a complete 3 -year cycle of responsorial psalms! His experience and expertise has directly shaped the evolution of the music department over the last five years and we wish him and his wife Pauline all the very best for their next chapter. New Organist Appointment We are delighted to announce that James Perkins has been appointed the new Organist here at the Cathedral from mid-September. You are warmly invited to join in the Rally to pray for ‘World Peace and Young People’. The Principal Celebrant is Fr Colin Patey (Retired Priest of the Nottingham Diocese) and the day will commence at 2pm with concelebrated Mass, followed by picnic and refreshments in the lovely grounds of the monastery.

    90308 Prayers to John Bradburne A6_Nre John Bradburne Leaflet 30/01/2014 12:25 Page 1 JOHN BRADBURNE John Bradburne Third Order Franciscan, mystic, poet and friend of lepers. Born in England in 1921, he served with the Gurkhas in Malaya and Burma Prayers during World War II. A Pauline-like conversion led him to become a pilgrim seeker, first with the Benedictines, then the Carthusians, but remained a layman to the end. His search for God’s will led him through England, Europe and the Holy Land, mostly on foot. In 1962 he went to “seek a cave” in Zimbabwe. Instead he found Mutemwa Leprosy Settlement. There he tended a flock of 80 leprosy patients with loving care, laying down his life for them on September 5th, 1979. At his funeral, a pool of blood was seen beneath his coffin. On opening it, there was no evidence where the blood had come from. However, an oversight was revealed: John had not been clothed in th e habit of St. Francis, as is the privilege of members of the Third Order, and had been John’s wish. The habit was found and John was clothed in it. Since his death there have been many signs of his sanctity: reports of miracles, claims of cures, as well as many answers to prayer.
