Four months after Buducnost claimed their second European crown, we are ready to write a completely new chapter as we enter the 23rd season of the competition. Eight matches and two qualification tournaments will determine which two teams will earn the remaining berths in the 2015/16 Group Matches. The tournaments will take place in two of the biggest countries in women’s handball and I am sure we can look forward to large crowds in both Baia Mare, Romania and Drammen, Norway. What makes this year’s qualification even more exciting is the fact that we have two participants with the potential to make it all the way to the Women’s EHF FINAL4 in Budapest on 7/8 May 2016. HCM Baia Mare and Györi Audi ETO KC both reached the newly introduced quarter-final stage last season, but found themselves fighting for their spots in the Group Matches phase courtesy of surprising stumbles in their respective domestic leagues. EHF Champions League newcomers CSM Bucuresti took the Romanian title at the expense of Baia Mare and the double winner Györ suffered a shock final defeat to their arch rivals FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria in the Hungarian league final. Their mission is clear, but not at all easy as they both face formidable adversaries. Györ will have expectations to live up to in Group 1, where the Norwegian runners-up Glassverket are amongst their fiercest opponents. Baia Mare and the star-studded Esbjerg team, which boasts Dutch, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian international players, will both be eyeing the same prize in Group 2. To reach the final showdown in each of the two groups, the favourites have to overcome their semi-final hurdles and the history of our sport offers numerous examples of teams underestimating their opponents and coming undone. Ankara Yenimahalle BSK are the Turkish newcomers in qualification but all the other sides competing – WHC Radnicki Kragujevac, BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Reg. and SERCODAK Dalfsen - have all gathered enough experience in previous seasons to spring a surprise. In the Group Matches FC Midtjylland, HC Vardar and Hypo Niederösterreich await the winner of Group 1 from Drammen, whilst the winner of Group 2 in Baia Mare will join last season’s runners-up Larvik, RK Krim Mercator and the emerging Russian powerhouse of Rostov-Don. There are eight exciting matches ahead in this qualification phase and I wish to all teams the very best of luck. We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have. We look forward to working with you in the upcoming season!
