These researchers, who come from all branches of the economic and social sciences, the huma- nities and law, implement an integrated, multidisciplinary and interna- tionally comparative research program that focuses on Europe’s migra- tion and integration challenges. Within the program, existing research is integrated and new re- search lines are developed that involve issues crucial to European-level policy-making and provide a theory-based design to implement new re- search.     CANADA’S GREEK MOMENT: TRANSNATIONAL POLITICS, ACTIVISTS, AND SPIES DURING THE LONG SIXTIES CHRISTOPHER GRAFOS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO DECEMBER 2016 © CHRISTOPHER GRAFOS, 2016 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines Greek immigrant homeland politics during the period of Greece’s military dictatorship, 1967 to 1974, in Toronto and Montreal. It carefully considers the internal dynamics of anti-junta activism in Canada’s Greek populations, but it also contemplates the meanings of external perceptions, particularly from the Canadian state and Canadian public discourse. The study acknowledges the dominant paradigm of Greek immigrants as unskilled workers, however, it demonstrates that this archetype is not monolithic. In many ways, it is challenged by a small number of Greeks who possessed skills to write letters to politicians, create petitions, organize public rallies, and politically mobilize others. At the same time, this dissertation carefully considers Canada’s social and political environment and shows how uniquely Canadian politics ran parallel to and informed Greek homeland politics. Transnationalism is used as an analytical tool, which challenges the meaning of local/national borders and the perception that they are sealed containers. The main argument expressed here is that environments shape movements and migrant political culture does not develop in a vacuum. Each chapter deals with specific nuances of anti-junta activism in Toronto and Montreal. Chapter One examines the organized voices of the Greek community’s anti-dictatorship movement. The chapter’s latter section looks at how the Panhellenic Liberation Movement (PAK), led by Andreas Papandreou, consolidated itself as the main mouthpiece against Greece’s authoritarian regime.

Hatzis Professor of Philosophy of Law & Theory of Institutions at the Department of History & Philosophy of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Director of Research at the Center for Liberal Studies-Athens; Fellow, Institute for Research in Economic and Fiscal Issues-Paris1 Abstract: In late 1823 two representatives of the London Philhellenic Committee (a Philhellenic group established to support the Greek War of Independence from Ottoman rule) arrived in Missolonghi in Western Greece to administer a loan to the revolutionary Greek government and help the Greek cause. The visit of Lord Byron and Col. Leicester Stanhope was short. Lord Byron died in early April of 1824 and Col. Stanhope was recalled to Britain one month later. During this short period, they managed to establish three newspapers in liberated Greece but also to antagonize each other on the ideology and content of these newspapers. The objective of Stanhope was to disseminate Bentham’s liberal ideas in Greece and the objective of Byron was the international recognition of the Greek War of Independence. Their never-ending fights led to the first major episode of newspaper cen- sorship in the history of modern Greece: Byron confiscated an issue of a newspaper because he thought it was damaging to the revolutionaries’ international standing and he tried to undermine Stanhope’s position by dis- crediting him to the London Committee.

    THE CLASSIC TRILEMMA --------- OF --------- POLIS-ETHNOS-COSMOS By Paris Arnopoulos PANTEION UNIVERSITY ATHENS 1996 ABSTRACT The vital problem of world affairs is how to resolve the contradictions between political order and cosmic chaos, thus establishing a peaceful coexistence between widely opposing cultures and ideologies. This problem was first conceptualized by the ancient Greeks who discussed and proposed various solutions which have yet to be surpassed. Although, the miniature world of the city-state (polis), instead of nation-state (ethnos), ultimately succumbed to the external forces of the world at large (cosmos); its ideas and actions are still relevant. The significant correspondence between the Hellenic era and the present makes these particular thoughts of general interest because they may help us understand and resolve our own problems. This study attributes the classic Hellenic malaise to the agonistic pathology of its people, reflected in the classic trichotomy of: -political power: separating citizen and foreigner, native and alien; -economic wealth: distinguishing rich and poor, free and slave; -biosocial culture: dichotomizing Greeks and barbarians, civil and wild. The resulting trilemma therefore became how to combine patriotism, nationalism and humanism. The main ideas proposed fall into a Political thesis, Pan-Hellenic antithesis, and Cosmopolitan synthesis. The hypothesis of this study asserts that the Polis-Ethnos-Cosmos triptych remains a perennial trilemma of the human condition. Thus juxtaposed, the three fundamental identity values (patriotism, nationalism, humanism) can neither be maximized nor extinguished, as many have and still try to do in turbulent periods of global change. Our present transition from modern to post-modern world is just as dynamic and dangerous as that from the Hellenic to Hellenistic era.

    NORDICOM REVIEW Interpolations of class, “race”, and politics Denmark’s Jyllands-Posten and its coverage of Greek national elections during the “Greek crisis” Yiannis MylonasI & Matina NoutsouII I School of Media, National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia II Department for the Study of Religions, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic Abstract This article focuses on the ways in which the Danish liberal mainstream press covered events related to the so-called Greek crisis. In particular, we examine the coverage of the different Greek national elections that took place during the Greek crisis years (2010–2019) by Jyllands-Posten (JP), a popular Danish daily newspaper. Qualitative content analysis is deployed to study a corpus of 70 news and editorial articles published by JP on the afore- mentioned topic. Our analysis highlights the existence of three main interrelated themes in JP’s constructions of the Greek elections: a moralist, a culturalist, and a technocratic/ anti-leftist theme. These themes are theorised through the use of relevant theory on class cultures and politics today. Keywords: Greek crisis, liberalism, technocracy, anti-communism, Orientalism Introduction In this article, we study the mainstream media representations of the so-called Greek crisis in the Danish public sphere. This specific study continues our previous work (Mylonas & Noutsou, 2018) on this understudied topic, as far as Scandinavian media is concerned. Critical scholars (e.g., Ervedosa, 2017) have generally studied German media coverage of the Greek, or eurozone crisis as well as that of Greek media (Kostopoulos, 2020) and the media from the Anglophone world (Bozatzis, 2016; Ojala & Harjuniemi, 2016).

For the British, Greeceremained a destitute country, in need of assistanceto defeatthe communists. This study emphasisesthe diplomatic and military co-operation between the British, the Americanand the Greekgovernments in trying to defeatthe communist forces, while attention is given to the policy and aims of the Greek Communist Party. The communistattempts to take over power along with the policies of the Greek governmentsand their allies are examined, with particular emphasis on the counterinsurgencyoperations of the Greek government developed from 1947 until the final defeat of the communist forces in 1949.

On the other hand, there have been real changes in the attitude of the Western public towards their Governments’ Eastern policies, which have produced corresponding changes in those policies themselves; and the Greeks and Turks have appeared in unfamiliar roles. The Greeks have shown the same unfitness as the Turks for governing a mixed population. The Turks, in their turn, have become exponents of the political nationalism of the West.

They date from 1908 to 1979 and are ordered by two master narratives, the ‘Great Idea’ and the ‘European Idea’, concepts with multifarious implications for the making of contemporary Greece. The nature of the musical works presented during these events, the particular kind of reception they received, the debates they generated, and the role their composers hoped they would play in the construction of a contemporary Greek musical identity are some of the indicative issues that will be discussed, and always in relation to the prevailing political and social context. More specifically, I will try to show by way of these events how politics and culture were inextricably tied together. In some cases the events directly mirrored the political divisions and social tensions of their time, while in others they formed an easy (‘innocent’) prey to political agendas – indigenous and foreign – that were at some remove from matters aesthetic.
