In our new home in Sunset Park we energetically expand the possibilities of live performance, and engage our community at all levels through partnerships and programs. TMT PROGRAMS INSTITUTE The Institute is a year-long fellowship (January – December) that provides five diverse artists space, support and a $1,000 stipend to challenge themselves and their art-making practice. 2019 Fellows: Sarah Dahnke, Mashuq Mushtaq Deen, Yoni Oppenheim, Gabrielle Revlock, and Sarah K.     Hans Ulrich Obrist A Brief History of Curating JRP | RINGIER & LES PRESSES DU REEL 2 To the memory of Anne d’Harnoncourt, Walter Hopps, Pontus Hultén, Jean Leering, Franz Meyer, and Harald Szeemann 3 Christophe Cherix When Hans Ulrich Obrist asked the former director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Anne d’Harnoncourt, what advice she would give to a young curator entering the world of today’s more popular but less experimental museums, in her response she recalled with admiration Gilbert & George’s famous ode to art: “I think my advice would probably not change very much; it is to look and look and look, and then to look again, because nothing replaces looking … I am not being in Duchamp’s words ‘only retinal,’ I don’t mean that. I mean to be with art—I always thought that was a wonderful phrase of Gilbert & George’s, ‘to be with art is all we ask.’” How can one be fully with art? In other words, can art be experienced directly in a society that has produced so much discourse and built so many structures to guide the spectator? Gilbert & George’s answer is to consider art as a deity: “Oh Art where did you come from, who mothered such a strange being. For what kind of people are you: are you for the feeble-of-mind, are you for the poor-at-heart, art for those with no soul. Are you a branch of nature’s fantastic network or are you an invention of some ambitious man? Do you come from a long line of arts? For every artist is born in the usual way and we have never seen a young artist.

    LGBTQ Activists Attacked by Trump Supporters While Leaving NYC Art Space A group of people leaving the closing party of Decolonize This Place at the Tribeca nonprofit Artists Space were attacked by men who identi- fied themselves as supporters of Donald Trump. Hrag Vartanian December 19, 2016 The people attacked after attending a party at Artists Space (left to right): Connor Hicks, Colin Ashley, Peter Soeller (photos by Patti Cruz, courtesy Peter Soeller) On Saturday night, a group of arts activists in New York City was physically and verbally assaulted by four or five men who identified as Donald Trump supporters. The group was traveling to a restaurant after the closing party of the Decolonize This Place residency at the nonprofit Artists Space in Tribeca. According to Michael Basillas, who was part of the group that was attacked, the nine individuals leaving the party — five women and four men — were chanting slogans from various actions at Decolonize This Place, including “Free Palestine,” “Black Lives Matter,” and “We’re Queer, We’re Here, We’re Fabulous, Don’t Fuck With Us,” when they were approached by a group of four or five men. The men started chant- ing “Trump, Trump, Trump,” and the group leaving Artists Space responded by chanting “Olé, Olé, Olé, Fuck Trump.” The four or five Trump supporters then approached the group, according to Basillas, and one of the men, who appeared to be white, showed them his Blue Lives Matter bracelet and, according to Basillas, he “then started pointing out the queers in the Vartanian, Hrag. “LGBTQ Activists Attacked by Trump Supporters While Leaving NYC Art Space.” Hyperallergic, December 19, 2016.

Visiting lecturers and faculty (vl, vf) are at Chautauqua for periods ranging from 1 to 5 days. LISA CORINNE DAVIS: Faculty, Hunter College "Lisa Corinne Davis' paintings occupy a point somewhere between cartooning and cartography, abstraction and figuration. Her carefully articulated images are oddly familiar but essentially ephemeral, visually resonant but also deliberately enigmatic. Davis’ subject has always been the exploration of racial, social, and psychological identity. She has developed her own vocabulary for rendering the world, a lexicon that expresses her personal experience as an African-American woman in the 21st Century, and, by extension, that of an individual in modern society. While subtly avoiding the clichés of special identity politics—if anything, challenging them—Davis provides the viewer with an evocative visual code for deciphering his own environment." (P. Hoban) Davis received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Hunter College and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute. Her work has been exhibited nationally including exhibitions at June Kelly Gallery, Marlborough Gallery, Spanierman Modern, the Bronx Museum, and Von Lintel Gallery. Who decides? It took nearly eighty years after the death of Johann Sebastian Bach in 1750 for the world to start tuning-in to his true genius. Herman Melville’s literary masterpiece Moby Dick was a commercial flop in his lifetime. And it was a French art critic in the 19th century who alerted the world that the 17th century Dutch artist Jan Vermeer was a master worth giving a standing ovation for. Life is dizzying and complicated and fills itself with anomalies, oddities, and things that defy norms and or expectations. Take for example the 50-plus year career of American artist, Judy Rifka, who took the New York art world by storm with her revolutionary Single Shapes on plywood paintings at the start of the 1970’s. “Every painter who saw them at the time recognized their influence” said the esteemed art critic, Rene Ricard, in his oft-cited, 1981 Artforum essay, The Radiant Child. Almost immediately, important collectors like the Vogels and Jean Paul Najar began buying them. Artists and critics alike praised Rifka’s work. In April, 1974, art critic Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe wrote in Artforum that Judy Rifka’s Single Shapes “dominated the show” [...] and “that Rifka’s is the most devastatingly original formulation of painting’s identity that I’ve encountered in some time.” In 1975, The Whitney Museum’s curators selected her Single Shapes for that year’s Biennial and the American conceptual artist, Mel Bochner, selected Rifka’s Single Shapes for a 1975 show at Artists Space, NYC.
