UFC On FOX Preview and Predictions: Will Tate Earn Another Shot At Rousey? Author : Robert D. Cobb The UFC may be set for an epic shift Saturday night in Chicago as it presents UFC on FOX 16. The show is headlined by a huge rematch between UFC Bantamweight Champion and current champion T.J. Dillashaw and former champion Renan Barão. Dillashaw eneded Barao’s 21 fight, seven-year winning streak and took his title back on May 24 2014 at UFC 173 in the biggest upset in MMA history. Dillashaw's rise to stardom was truly unseen as he only had seven UFC fights to his credit, two of which were losses when he received the unexpected title match against Barao. It was an injury to Raphael Assunção that even gave Dillashaw the chance at the title fight. He made it pay off and completely dominated Barao for the first four and half rounds before putting him away by knockout with a little over two minutes remaining in the fight. It truly was one of the greatest performances in MMA history. One has to wonder if he can do it again against one of the all time best pound for pound fighters. Barao is out for revenge. It is a can’t miss fight that I believe will see a title change back to Barao in what will be another classic. Look for Barao by submisison in four rounds, setting up an epic trilogy. The under card is nothing to sneeze at either as Jessica Evil Eye, who was recently featured in “Ohio Warriors” takes on Miesha Tate with the winner getting the next shot at Ronda Rousey. Tate is a cagey veteran with excellent grappling skills. It is hard to make a case for Eye, as she only has one victory in the Octagon. She had two, but one was taken when she made the unwise choice to smoke dope before a fight. She is a feared striker, but I don’t see her getting inside of Tate quick enough to do damage. Look for Tate to ground her for three straight rounds and earn the title shot. Joe Lauzon will be making his 18th trip into the Octagon when he takes on Japanese legend Takanori Gomi who will be doing battle in his 46th MMA fight. Choi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Natalie Jolly, Ph.D. School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences The intent of this thesis is to explore existing gender norms in mixed martial arts cultures. Masculinity is particularly valorized in sport, creating tension for female athletes who are forced to balance masculine norms with feminine beauty ideals. While there is a robust literature on the intersections of mixed martial arts (MMA) and masculinity, female voices are rarely heard in that literature. My research goes beyond the work of others by incorporating female voices and perspectives. Grounded in gender constructionism, my thesis addresses how both male and female MMA fighters conceive of their and others’ participation in gendered terms, and how this informs their gender identities. My thesis further examines the intersections of masculinity and gender that are readily observable within MMA, and those that are less conspicuous or go largely unnoticed. Finally, my thesis explores how norms perpetuate gender stereotypes and highlight differences, as masculine norms persist in the fighting culture. The examination of gender norms in MMA contributes to a larger body of research concerning gender roles and norms in other social contexts.

Incidents of Misogyny and Sexism in the UFC Rampage Jackson In the YouTube video, called “How To Pick Up a Gurl – Fast,” Rampage Jackson attempts to rape a woman in a parking garage. Before attacking his target, Rampage instructs viewers to use chloroform as “something to help her relax” and zip ties. The UFC fighter explains, “I like this parking lot because my cousin work for the security company so I know the cameras are gonna be out of service right now.”1 As Rampage stalks his victim, he comments, “And I hope she got low self-esteem.” The video has received over 200,000 views and remains accessible for public viewing.2 To our knowledge, the UFC has not issued an official statement, fined, or suspended Jackson for the video. In July 2008, video footage was uploaded of Rampage positioning himself behind a female Japanese reporter, placing his hand on her thigh, and dry humping her. When she moves away from him, he follows her and grabs her leg.3 The video currently has 1.4 million views. In June 2009, Rampage, in the middle of an interview, holds Cage Potato reporter Heather Nichols against him, and dry humps her for a full 37 seconds. He continues to hold her after she attempts to end the interview, and does not let her go until a man walks up to Rampage and taps him on the shoulder a few seconds after the interview ends. The video has over 9.8 million views.4 In late May 2011, when being interviewed by MMA Heat host Karyn Bryant, Rampage replied that she’s “Jamaican me horny” in response to her statement that she was Jamaican, black and white.
