The first is to demonstrate that commentaries on the work produced by Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) before 1873, an artist who was Jewish and homosexual, have been dominated by critics’ perceptions of him as a marginal figure. Solomon’s Jewish heritage and homosexuality doubly marginalised him in the Christian, heterosexual culture of Victorian England so it is understandable that commentators have focused on his minority position and read signs of difference in his works. However, my second aim is to challenge this perspective. I will show how much Solomon’s art had in common with that of his contemporaries and broaden the discussion by analysing paintings which have been given less critical attention, possibly because they do not present so many opportunities to refer to the artist’s marginality. -

WORD or two of introduction to the present Exhibition A may not come amiss. That Madox Brown was a remark able figure in the Art world of the present reign is now, I think, an acknowledged fact. That he was also a great painter has been generally ceded, even by those who, until lately, were his most ardent decriers. But there remains a body of public and cognoscenti who either ignore, or are ignorant of, both the man and his work. It is in the hope of reaching that body that the present Exhibition is held. "One-man shows" may or may not be desirable things; but, whether or no, such a show of Madox Brown's work is singularly appropriate, for did he not, along with a host of other incongruous things, invent the "one-man show " ? In 1865, at 191, Piccadilly, he exhibited a selection of 100 of his own works, a selection ranging from his earliest studies to his last picture, " Work," which had cost him eleven years' labour. Before that time no artist had been bold enough to challenge a verdict on so large a portion of his labours, though single pictures had been exhibited by artists like Mr. Holman Hunt and the late R. B. Martineau. -

Schoonover Frank Earle Schoonover was born on August 19, 1877, in Oxford, New Jersey. In 1891, he graduated with high honors from a Trenton, New Jersey, high school, where he gave the salutatory address. After considering the idea of entering the ministry, he decided, in 1896, to attend art school at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia. There he came under the beneficial influence of Howard Pyle, whose work he had copied from magazines throughout his boyhood. During the summers of 1898 and 1899, Schoonover received one of ten annual scholarships to Pyle’s summer school at Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. At Drexel, Schoonover and Stanley M. Arthurs became class monitors for Pyle’s class. In 1899, Schoonover moved to Wilmington; in the following year, he set up his studio at 1305 Franklin Street and later, in 1906, established a permanent studio at 1616 Rodney Street, where he remained for the rest of his career. -

Victorian Rainbow Makers: Variations on Colour Poetics 1 Victorian Rainbow Makers: Variations on Colour Poetics Charlotte Ribeyrol 1 In his 1871 reissuing of George Field’s Chromatography, Thomas Salter retraced the invention of the first artificial dyes made from coal-tar,1 which the older chemist, who had died in 1854, could not have witnessed. Although all the poetic quotations in Field’s part-literary, part-scientific discussion of colouring practices were excised from this edition, Salter waxed lyrical when he evoked the wealth of new chromatic terms made available by the expanding chemical and textile industries: The violet mauve led the way, followed by the red magenta, the blue azuline, the yellow phosphine, the green emeraldine, the orange aurine, by purple, and brown, and black. […] The world rubbed its eyes with astonishment; and truly it seemed almost as wonderful to produce the colours of the rainbow from a lump of coal, as to extract sunshine from cucumbers.
