SESSION A (Ticketholders only) 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Administrative Leadership Day . NEW ! . Begin with the Endless in Mind – Igniting DREAMS! Administrative Leadership Day @ CSLA with Alan November

For:  Superintendents  Assistant Superintendents  C&I Directors  Ed Tech Directors  Principals  Assistant Principals

When? Thursday, February 7, 2019 (9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.)

What? Alan November, internationally recognized education thought leader, will spearhead a day of strategic planning.

“Begin with the end in mind” sounds like solid pedagogical advice, but too often it stifles engagement, relevancy, passion, creativity, and divergent thinking. “Begin with the endless in mind,” on the other hand, signals a simple but radical shift. In an era where our students will have several jobs over their careers, including many that do not currently exist, process skills matter much more than content knowledge. The most important process skill we can impart to students is information literacy.

Now more than ever, it is critical that we prepare our students to be media and information literate. While many of our students have immediate access to information at their fingertips, recent studies have shown these same students have difficulty assessing the quality and accuracy of the content they find online. The ability to think critically and make informed decisions is crucial to being an engaged and active participant in society—and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that we support our students in developing these skills.

Join us for a full day with dynamic speakers including Alan November, Tim Baird, Mike Lawrence, Delaine Eastin, Julie Evans, Michael Morrison, Carrie Lancon, Jennifer Howerter, and other experts as we discuss media and information literacy and explore the foundation for student-centered, self- directed learning.

COST: $75 which includes lunch (Feb 7) and access to the rest of the Conference (Friday, Saturday, Sunday meals excluded, but can be purchased separately). CSLA, 6444 E. UnConference (All are invited to attend) 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm

At the UnConference, there are no planned speakers or panels! Instead, the UnConference is an opportunity to share with other conference attendees topics YOU care about. The focus is on informal peer‐to‐peer learning, PLN (personal learning network) building, and sharing. You can lead an informal discussion on a topic you propose, or you can simply participate in a topic that appeals to you. You can share an idea with all the participants during our group sharing "Smackdown," or you can just listen to everyone else's practical ideas. (And we bet you'll end up wanting to share, even if you didn't think you would! We know you have great ideas to offer.)

Whether you are brand new to the library world or a long‐time veteran, we need your input and promise you will benefit from the ideas, energy, and the camaraderie of the group at this late night, informal event. And, the UnConference is also one of the most FUN conference events, including a Team Trivia session and prizes, refreshments and beverages, and informal socializing and networking.

Have questions or want to volunteer to help with planning?

LEGISLATIVE MEETING (All are invited to attend) 8:00 am – 9:00 am

California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D - Santa Barbara) has been invited to speak during the legislative session. Senator Jackson represents the 19th Senate District in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. She is the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and serves on both the Education Committee and the Education Budget Subcommittee. In 2018, she authored SB 947, which would have required the Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI), in consultation with the Executive Director of the State Board, to identify best practices related to digital citizenship, internet safety and media literacy and report those practices to the legislature and its policy committees. The bill also would have required the SPI to convene and consult an advisory committee related to best practices. CSLA strongly supported this bill because it reflected several of the organization’s policy priorities. While the bill was vetoed by Governor Brown, it established a strong argument for why information literacy is so critical and why it is an issue that policymakers must continue to address. Senator Jackson will review this bill, the important policy issues surrounding it, and where she intends to direct her efforts in 2019.

Also, during this legislative session, Jeff Frost, the CSLA legislative advocate in Sacramento, will speak on the status of key CSLA legislative priorities, such as updating the decade-old Model School Library Standards and amending the Education Code to include a requirement that school districts review their school library needs as a part of finalizing their Local Control Accountability Plans. Both Senator Jackson and Jeff Frost will be available to take questions during their talks.
