Conference Coordinator's Welcome Message

Dear colleagues and friends, Allow me to warmly thank the conference committee for their time and commitment to making this a successful conference. I have the privilege of welcoming you to the beautiful Pacific Palms Resort. We are confident this will be a comfortable space for all of our events - social, professional development, networking, and recreational. Go ahead and take the time to learn the floorplan because we will be here for the 2020 Conference, as well! I am particularly happy to be present this year to learn, exchange views, and share experiences with other library loving people. I congratulate you for your commitment and active participation. President Ousley-Swank’s conference theme, DREAMS (Design, Research, Engineering, Arts, Math, Science) has truly been a dream for us to plan a variety of events for this conference. The conference keepsake this year is not a T-shirt (or a hoodie like last year), but rather a dreamy (and comfy) travel blanket that folds up into a pillow and slips right over your luggage handle.  Dress in layers and bring a sweater (or your travel blanket). Conference facilities are infamous for being chilly in some rooms and a bit warmish in others.

Bring some cash. The California School Library Foundation will be selling those “no-lose” envelopes for $20 each. There will also be no-host bars at several events; Exhibit Hall Grand Opening, Friday Evening Reception, Section Meet & Greet, and California Young Reader Medal/Author & Illustrator Banquet.

For your packing list:  If you like to dress up, Saturday night is the time to do it. The Section Meet & Greet will feature an opportunity for professional pictures. Sign up at the event to pose by yourself or with your group. The CYRM banquet follows, and while the suggested attire is business casual, you are welcome to wear your bling or something more formal.  Bring your jammies - and join us for the Friday night reception Pajama Party 8:30 - 11:00 pm. Coffee and dessert will be available, as well as a no-host bar, and there will be a rockin’ DJ and a big dance floor. All attendees and exhibitors are invited. Pajama attire not required.  Purple Sunday. Many of our attendees will have to travel on Sunday afternoon/evening and we’d like to encourage you to wear comfortable clothes. Wear purple to celebrate the conference theme color.

I’d like to highlight a few of our events that are new or have changed or moved from years past:

1. NEW: ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP DAY: Thursday 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM A powerhouse of speakers will lead a full day of learning. The event is designed for those in leadership positions that make decisions about school libraries.

2. BACK: BIRDS OF A FEATHER MEETINGS: Thursday 2:30 - 4:00 PM Meet at these Job-Alike gatherings to exchange ideas and talk specifically about issues that are particular to your situation.

3. EVENING RECEPTION (Theme: PAJAMA PARTY): Friday 8:30 - 11:00 PM. As hinted above, the evening reception is hosted annually by the Presidents and Officers of the Association. Grab some dinner, take a nap, or simply have some time to yourself after the Exhibit Hall closes, but don’t forget to come back for dessert and dancing. Again, pajamas not required, and everyone is welcome.

4. BUFFETS: Before the Membership Meeting and After the Closing Session These casual buffets are included as a member benefit and a ticket is required. Tickets can be purchased by non- members, check at the registration desk for availability.

Cheers to you all as you make D.R.E.A.M.S. come true for California’s students,

Janice Gilmore-See, CSLA Conference Coordinator

Healthy Choices!

Valencia New to the conference this year is our Healthy Choices programming. Join us in enhancing the conference experience by incorporating some healthy choices along the way! Participate and earn your health badge!

• STEP CHALLENGE! Step your way to a healthier, more active conference! Use your own device (FitBit, smartphone app, etc.) to count your daily steps and report them daily to our leaderboard. Who will win the conference challenge? Not able to compete with the top walkers? Set your own step challenge! Share your progress on Twitter & Instagram using #cslahealth [Check CSLA social media for leaderboard link in the days leading up to the conference.]

• WALK! Meet other members for some fresh air, conversation, and a nice walk! Meet up in the Pacific Palms lobby in comfortable shoes for a 3 mile walk (feel free to turn around any time). Conferencing alone? This is a nice way to meet other members and a great chance for all to increase step counts!

Friday morning, 7:00am; Friday evening, 6:00pm; Saturday morning, 7:00am

• DECOMPRESS! Overwhelmed with all the great ideas you’re getting? Need a space to debrief, or meet new people? Visit the Valencia room in down moments and between concurrent sessions throughout the conference for activities to keep you active or to calm your mind.

• BE MINDFUL… Loving the conference but feeling constantly on the go? Visit the Valencia room, Friday 1:00 for some relaxation. Join in on recording-guided mindfulness and light stretching activities. Quiet your mind and build some practices you can take back to work with you or share with your students. [Consider bringing a mat or towel]

• Be active! Conferences involve a lot of sitting; keep looking for ways to stay mobile throughout your time here. Can’t join us on any of the scheduled activities but want to do something on your own time? A 3 mile walking path surrounds the resort grounds on Temple and Azusa. Schabarum Regional Park has multiple hiking trails and is only a 10 minute drive from the hotel. Pacific Palms offers a pool, a fitness center, and a golf course. An informal workout meetup will be in the Fitness Center, Saturday, 5:00pm. Don’t forget the dance! Share your activities using #cslahealth and #csla19

• Eat healthy! Healthy, mindful eating can sometimes prove to be a challenge for some while attending a conference. Need some support? Want to share your successes? We’re here for you! What are your go-to healthy eating strategies? Use #cslahealth on Twitter, Instagram, or WW’s CONNECT to share.

President’s Welcome Message

Dear Conference Attendees:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Pacific Palms Resort and the 2019 CSLA Annual Conference. The conference theme is “D·R·E·A·M·S” – Design, Research, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Science, which celebrates school library programs’ support of all educators in all content areas, working to develop students’ critical thinking and information literacy skills. The conference committee has been hard at work preparing a wide variety of professional growth opportunities from which you can choose.

On Thursday, we are pleased to offer Administrative Leadership Day, a seminar for district and site administrative leaders. This seminar is an outgrowth of last year’s inaugural Media and Information Literacy Summit, sponsored by a coalition led by the California Department of Education. The theme of this seminar is Begin with the Endless in Mind: Igniting DREAMS. It will feature educational thought leader Alan November and former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin.

Thursday evening, relax with the Unconference, an unstructured, dynamic, and fluid learning experience. You are invited to join your colleagues to explore and share the latest trends and best practices in school librarianship.

Fresh from Thursday’s Administrative Leadership Day seminar, Alan November will be Friday’s keynote speaker. Alan will use his wit and humor to demonstrate the role school libraries play in nurturing creativity, curiosity, empathy, and courage. The conference will conclude on Sunday with award-winning author and illustrator Eugene Yelchin, who will share his personal experiences to show how reading informs our ethical, aesthetic, and ultimately, political stand.

Throughout the conference, we offer an outstanding array of breakout sessions, author panels, and social events. There are multiple events where you will have an opportunity to mingle, and our exhibiting partners have much to share. Be sure to visit their booths and customize the conference to meet your personal and professional growth goals.

On Friday, plan to attend the annual Membership Meeting. This is truly a forum for and by members that shapes the actions of our organization. Friday evening closes with a fun dessert reception.

Please join us Saturday morning for the Legislative meeting. You’ll hear the latest legislative efforts from our lobbyist, Jeff Frost, and VP of Government Relations, Glen Warren. At noon we will hold our Awards Luncheon. I encourage you to attend and celebrate our awardees. Saturday afternoon there will be a sections meet and greet, and the evening culminates with the CYRM dinner with guest speaker Sara Pennypacker, followed by an author signing.

The conference wraps up Sunday with lunch and the unveiling of next year’s conference theme.

Thank you for attending our conference. My wish for you is a memorable conference that inspires your DREAMS.

Thursday Special Event

SESSION A (Ticketholders only) 9:00 am – 3:00 pm HOT SPOT Administrative Leadership Day . NEW ! . Begin with the Endless in Mind – Igniting DREAMS! Administrative Leadership Day @ CSLA with Alan November

For:  Superintendents  Assistant Superintendents  C&I Directors  Ed Tech Directors  Principals  Assistant Principals

When? Thursday, February 7, 2019 (9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.)

What? Alan November, internationally recognized education thought leader, will spearhead a day of strategic planning.

“Begin with the end in mind” sounds like solid pedagogical advice, but too often it stifles engagement, relevancy, passion, creativity, and divergent thinking. “Begin with the endless in mind,” on the other hand, signals a simple but radical shift. In an era where our students will have several jobs over their careers, including many that do not currently exist, process skills matter much more than content knowledge. The most important process skill we can impart to students is information literacy.

Now more than ever, it is critical that we prepare our students to be media and information literate. While many of our students have immediate access to information at their fingertips, recent studies have shown these same students have difficulty assessing the quality and accuracy of the content they find online. The ability to think critically and make informed decisions is crucial to being an engaged and active participant in society—and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that we support our students in developing these skills.

Join us for a full day with dynamic speakers including Alan November, Tim Baird, Mike Lawrence, Delaine Eastin, Julie Evans, Michael Morrison, Carrie Lancon, Jennifer Howerter, and other experts as we discuss media and information literacy and explore the foundation for student-centered, self- directed learning.

COST: $75 which includes lunch (Feb 7) and access to the rest of the Conference (Friday, Saturday, Sunday meals excluded, but can be purchased separately). CSLA, 6444 E. DREAMS – Libraries: Learning for a Lifetime

If librarians were essential in the world of the printing press, they are much more important in the age of the web. We are in the midst of a globally connected information revolution that will transform the culture of teaching and learning. Librarians can (and should be) be key contributors of this new culture.

The library has always been the hub of student empowered reading and learning. How do we help students develop the skills necessary for functioning in a digital, global economy? In his keynote, Alan will inspire us to look critically at our programs, considering this: As technology grows ever more ubiquitous, the massive shift from paper as the dominant media to digital content will only continue. Beyond going to the library to do research–simply accessing existing published work–students need to be engaged in producing content of their own. The growing trend toward online learning, more personalized instruction, and collaboration on a global scale also challenge librarians and media specialists, who are positioned to lead the way as technology adopters in their schools.

Learn how these skills must be embedded across the curriculum and within the design of assignments across all grades and subjects. Alan November November Learning

Teacher Librarian, A.B. Miller High School (K11) Book Selection: Collaboratively Planned Independent Reading Projects Colonial A (K-12) Come learn how I have partnered with my Teacher Librarian to make the book selection process more successful with my students! During my first year of teaching, the assigned independent reading projects were unsuccessful, so I knew that I needed resources in order to meet my goal. With that in mind, instead of letting my students aimlessly wander in the stacks to find books, I strategically planned “book selection” activities with my Teacher Librarian. This has led to an increase in independent reading more aligned with student interests, thus increasing student engagement.
