9 A WORD FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

This past fall, Valadez Middle School Academy in Placentia hosted first graders from neighboring Melrose Elementary School and Rio Vista Elementary School for a school-wide reading event, Read for the Record®.

Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience. Last year, more than 2.5 million people participated. This year, between 500 and 600 students from the Placentia- Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) took part by reading, “Not Norman: A Goldfish Story,” written by Kelly Bennett and illustrated by Noah Z. Jones.

Thousands of books just like “Not Norman” are available for you to check out at the Placentia Library. The vast, free resources and programs offered by the library - from books, magazines and newspapers to digital technologies and online materials - offer PYLUSD students an incredible opportunity to continue learning outside the classroom environment.

We at the district value our close relationship with the Placentia Library, and encourage our Dr. Doug Domene students (and families) to take advantage of all they have to offer.

While Read for the Record was an extraordinary, important event that allowed our students to read and demonstrate their leadership skills, the Placentia Library works hard every day to close the word gap, one word at a time, by promoting reading to the entire community.
