Ms. Tanaka presented highly acclaimed recitals at the Gewandhaus (Leipzig, Germany), Villa Bertramka (Prague, Czech Republic) and Mest’anská Beseda (Pilsen, Czech Republic), and was invited as a special guest artist to perform for former U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. The latter was especially demanding for the pianist, the wonderful Misuzu Tanaka, who dispatched everything with both dizzying speed and sensitivity." -Today’s Zaman, Istanbul, Turkey “Ms. Tanaka’s recital was another fine offering by a most worthy international pianist . Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 30 (of the composer’s 32) is a 25-minute work harking back to Beethoven’s interest in the music of J.S. Bach . played expertly with passion, fire, and loving finesse . Ms. Tanaka received a standing ovation twice, and returned to play another showpiece” Heidi Bloch Artistic Director, Sundays at Four Concert Series. Smithfield, Virginia “Ms. Tanaka is an absolutely amazing artist who combines her phenomenal technical skills with her magnificent heart and soul to let the full glory of the music to shine through every note that she plays. She possesses a vast repertoire in many periods and styles, along with the kind of special musicianship that searches out the very essence of the work at hand, enabling her to bring it forth in all its splendor to her delighted listeners.” Norman Scribner The Choral Arts Society of Washington Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus “My opinion of Ms. Tanaka is based upon what I was privileged to see and hear at a remarkable recital that she gave at Virginia Military Institute . She delivered a truly magnificent performance. Her program, consisting of J.S. Bach’s sixth Partita, Leoš Janáček’s Piano Sonata 1.X.1905 and Robert Schumann’s Fantasie in C Major, was beautifully balanced, and her playing was nothing short of superb. Her phrasing, finger-work, dynamic shadings and calculation of tempos were flawless.” William D. ROMANTIC VARIATIONS: The path towards Romanticism and beyond can be traced back to the late works by Mozart. In this recital, Misuzu Tanaka explores this path with works by Mozart, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev. The recital opens with Mozart’s last Piano Sonata in D Major, K 576. Mozart was a sensuous composer with a wide range of emotions, and, in that sense, he was a Romantic composer. Schumann and Mendelssohn were fully immersed in the Romantic spirit while, much like Mozart, honoring techniques from the past such as counterpoint. As we move into the 20th century, Nationalism added a new definition to the Romantic Movement, and composers such as Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev emerged to the forefront. Rachmaninoff’s Preludes, Op. 23 MOZART: Piano Sonata D Major, K 576 SCHUMANN: Variations on the name, "Abegg", Op. 1 MENDELSSOHN: Variations Serieuses, Op. 54 Intermission RACHMANINOFF: Selections from Preludes, Op. 23 PROKOFIEV: Piano Sonata No.2, Op. 14 BAROQUE RESONANCES: In this recital program, Misuzu Tanaka focuses on the Baroque music and works that were inspired by that magnificent period. We are very fortunate to have two Bach revivals occur before our time, chiefly by two great musical figures: Mendelssohn and Busoni. The program opens with two of Mendelssohn’s Prelude and Fugues that showcase a famous “three-hand” technique of the 19th century virtuoso pianist, Sigismund Thalberg, as well as the composer’s signature light, elf-like texture from the Scherzo of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. These works, paired with Bach’s grand C Minor Partita, lead us on to a grand journey of Busoni’s towering transcription of Bach’s Chaconne from the Violin Partita No.2. The program culminates in Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli. Just like Corelli and his contemporaries, Rachmaninoff was spellbound by the enigmatic beauty of the old “La Folia” melody, creating a masterpiece that was to become his last original composition for a solo piano. MENDELSSOHN: Prelude and Fugue No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 35 Prelude and Fugue No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 35 J. S. BACH: Partita No. 2 in C Minor, BWV 826 Intermission J. S. BACH-BUSONI: Chaconne from the Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor RACHMANINOFF: Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42 Misuzu Tanaka Promo Kit Page 5 of 7 Misuzu Tanaka, concert pianist · www.misuzutanaka.com · [email protected] · (646) 508-8559 Multimedia Samples To listen to the High Quality Recordings please follow: Audio Video www.misuzutanaka.com/audio www.misuzutanaka.com/video www.youtube.com/c/MisuzuTanaka Misuzu Tanaka Promo Kit Page 6 of 7 Misuzu Tanaka, concert pianist · www.misuzutanaka.com · [email protected] · (646) 508-8559 Repertoire with Orchestra BACH Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, BWV 1052 Concerto No. 2 in E Major, BWV 1053 Concerto No. 7 in G Minor, BWV 1058 BEETHOVEN Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15 Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 19 Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 37 Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73 “Emperor” CHOPIN Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 HAYDN Concerto No. 11 in D Major, Hob.
