    PIONEERS OF NEW BRUNSWICK ARCHAEOLOGY III: LORING WOART BAILEY David W. Black Department of Anthropology, UNB–Fredericton Loring Woart Bailey was born at West Point, Virginia, in 1839. He came from an academic and professional background — his father, Jacob Whitman Bailey, taught chemistry at the Military Academy at West Point. Loring Bailey followed his father into a similar career path. Bailey attended private schools in Maryland and Rhode Island. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, in 1859, and then worked at Harvard for two years as a proctor and as a chemistry professor’s assistant. While at Harvard, he was a taught by some renowned academics of the time, including the geologist Louis Agassiz, the biologist Asa Grey and the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In 1861, Bailey was hired into the Chair of Chemistry and Natural History at the University of New Brunswick, when the post was left vacant by the death of James Robb. At that time, William Brydone Jack, President of UNB, was reorganizing the school on a non-sectarian basis. Loring Bailey was a professor at UNB for 47 years, retiring in 1907. From 1861 to 1900, he was the sole professor of natural science at UNB. He remained associated with the university, and active in scientific studies, until his death in 1925. As a consequence of being hired at UNB, Bailey was safely out of the United States during the American Civil War. Within two years of his arrival in Fredericton, he married Laurestine Maria D’Avray, a daughter of J.

    Take Action: Greyhound Rescue By: Sara Lee Donovan Step 1: Identify you Concern For my take action project I have decided to look at retired greyhound rescue organizations in Canada. I became interested in retired racing greyhounds in 2005 when I encountered my very first one. Quite large, and unusually timid I was surprised to discover how gentle and incredibly lazy this once racers was. In the summer of 2010, I adopted my first retired racing greyhound, Dark Star, or as he’s better known off the track, “Danny.” It was during the adoption process for Danny that I was overwhelmed by the devotion of the organization’s volunteers. Dedicating their homes, vehicles and their lives to ensuring that each rescued greyhound doesn’t just find a home, but rather their “forever home,” I was astonished at the altruism. The current shift in American gambling culture over the last decade has resulted in the closure of the numerous tracks around the United States. When tracks close the number of dogs that need homes significantly increases and many Canadian as well as American organizations work hard with the tracks to ensure that that every adoptable greyhound finds a home. While I am unsure to as whether or not tracks provide any monetary assistances to American organizations for their facilitation of a humane disbursement of the dogs, I know in Canada that these organizations depends solely on the generosity of others and fundraising. By “taking action” I am hoping to raise awareness, and debunk many of the myths surrounding the breed, and raise funds to donate towards these organizations noble endeavors Step 2: Research Your Concern Prior to beginning this project, it is important to note that I began with an extensive background with regards to the breed, as well as the development of the greyhound racing industry in the United States and the adoption programs that have surfaced.

'There the Canadian University Press, a natiowwide news service, came into existence. Its pur­ pose was to unite into a co,operative organization the newspapers of the leading universities of the Dominion. Success of the C. U.P. was apparent within the first few months of operation. Fourteen papers-dailies, semi,wee~lies, and wee~lies-lin~ed together by tele­ graph, ~ept 25,000 students informed of activities on cam, puses hundreds and thousands of miles away. Student opinion was consolidated, sectionalism was abolished. Among other aims set down by the pioneer editors was a project which this boo~let attempts to carry out -to standardize newspaper style and to incorporate into one handboo~ a set of fundamental rules and suggestions. 'This handboo~ ma~es no pretence of being a text boo~-it has been designed merely to give some general advice to college reporters and copyreaders. Many of the rules presented here are arbitrary. It is just as correct, for example, to write ··Prof. Brown, as .. Professor Brown,,, but for the sa~e of uniformity, the Canadian University Press has adopted the latter style and every member paper is expected to use it.
