Jersey Pinelands Hosts More Curling Events submitted by Jane Sharp

Jersey Pinelands Curling Club hosted a US Olympic Committee sanctioned “Olympic Day” event on June 3, 2017. In addition to a free House for the community we held the New Jersey Turnpike Challenge between Plainfield (dedicated-ice) and Jersey Pinelands (arena). This is the first year we’ve held this 5-and-under competition between our clubs. The first leg was held at Plainfield in January, while the second leg was at the Igloo Ice Rink where Jersey Pinelands plays. For many players, this was their first bonspiel. We used a rotating position format so they were able to play two ends at every position. Robb Young, the coordinator and member of both clubs, plans on making this an annual competition and hopes to see many new faces next year after the winter Olympics. Plainfield has been a wonderful partner in supporting Jersey Pinelands. But JPCC members will proudly be wearing “Turnpike Champion” t-shirts for the next year. I first joined the GNCC Board of Directors in May 2015 with my eyes wide open knowing that if I wanted to lead the organization one day, I was committing myself to an eight-year term on the board (two years as 2nd VP, two years as first VP, two years as President, and two years as Past President). I fully accept that responsibility, but as we celebrate our first 150 years and look forward to our next 150 years, I believe there is a better, more efficient way to address board governance of the GNCC. Asking our volunteer members to commit to eight years is no longer feasible. At our annual meeting this past spring, a motion passed that set up a time line to address a board re-organization that we are calling our New Management Plan (NMP). A copy of the motion can be found on the GNCC website at gncc.org/documents/board/100-motion-for- nmp/file[gncc.org. At next year’s annual meeting, we will vote on changing our by-laws to implement the NMP. A few highlights of the NMP are listed below. We propose a Chairman of the Board and a Vice-Chairman, each serving two-year terms, to lead the organization and eliminate the positions of President, 1st VP, 2nd VP, and Past President. Serving only four years will prevent the “burnout” we have recently experienced while preserving leadership continuity for the Board. In addition, we propose adding nine Managing Directors to the Board, each serving staggered three-year terms with a two-term limit. This would replace the current three At-Large Directors we currently have. By including term limits for each position, we hope to continually attract new people with fresh ideas on how to best serve the membership. At the direction of our accountants, we propose the Treasurer serve a five-year term with a two-term limit. Finally, the Secretary would be a non-voting member of the board appointed by the Chairman. In total, the board would consist of 12 voting members as described above. The GNCC is the fastest-growing region in the country and we now have 61 member clubs (serving about 5,000 members) with several more in the application process. Our region is vast, and there is much work to be done. Having more hands on deck will help us accomplish our goals. The greatest benefit in expanding the board will be the increase of its diversity to better represent our membership in terms of geography, youth and experience, club type (dedicated ice and arena), and male/female representation. We need members with skills in areas such as social media, training and teaching, arena club expertise, and the like, to name just a few. To help us achieve the level of diversity we seek, we are forming a Nominating Committee to find the right people. If you are interested in sitting on this committee or are interested in a board position, please send an email to [email protected]. Any correspondence, questions, or concerns relating to the NMP should be sent to gncc. [email protected] by August 30. The board will discuss all of the correspondence at our fall executive committee board meeting, which will be held on September 16. Introducing Emily Anderson, GNCC Junior Coordinator submitted by Maryann Vermeulen

Since 2012, Ashley Lawreck (Broomstones) has served as the GNCC Junior/Youth Programs Coordinator. She handled the administrative work for our annual Junior Camp, coordinated all GNCC Junior Championships and U-18 events, maintained contact with the USCA in all matters related to Junior programs, and served as a Trustee for the Second Century Fund. She proposed and developed the annual “GNCC Junior Spirit of Curling” award in honor of long-time official Eydie Savett. Ashley dedicated an invaluable amount of time and effort in support of our GNCC Juniors. Due to the current demands of her advancing career and education, Ashley now finds herself unable to continue in this very time-consuming role. On behalf of the GNCC Board of Directors, I hereby extend my sincere heartfelt thanks to Ashley for her time and conscientious efforts over the past five seasons. I am excited and happy to announce that Emily Anderson (Philadelphia) has volunteered her services and accepted the position of GNCC Junior Coordinator, effective immediately. Emily brings a lifetime of curling experience to this role. As I could not possibly do this justice, please allow Emily to introduce herself:
