This period establishes the new aims and hence the new techniques as having “classic” validity, and is accompanied with a prestige that holds over into subsequent periods. Dewey’s notion that “new procedures” create “certain modifications of the old tradition” is strongly reminiscent of T.S. Eliot’s argument in “Tradition and the Individual Talent” that “existing monuments” form an ideal order among themselves, which is modified by the introduction of the new (the really new) work of art among them. The existing order is complete before the new work arrives; for order to persist after the supervention of novelty, the whole existing order must be, if ever so slightly, altered; and so the relations, proportions, values of each work of art toward the whole are readjusted; and this is conformity between the old and the new. -

This pressurized environment sets the Brennan kids apart from their rich classmates and neighbors, and it’s not surprising that the relationship between Willie and his older brother Coyle becomes the central focus of Willie’s teenage years. Coyle is Willie’s shadow self—his fiercest competitor, his only meaningful ally against their father, and the person whom Willie regards with as serious scrutiny as he does himself. RIVALS is a novel about what makes a family, about love and hatred, and about growing up and realizing you can’t ever separate yourself from the forces that shaped you. Literature and the Public Sphere in the Internet Age Daniel James South PhD University of York English March 2019 Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between literature and the public sphere in the internet age. The introduction identifies gaps on these three topics in current academic work, and outlines the need for clarification of the links between them. The chapters go on to explicate these links with reference to the work of four contemporary authors, namely Jonathan Franzen, Dave Eggers, Zadie Smith, and David Foster Wallace. In their writing, these authors all identify different challenges to the public sphere in the internet age and, in response, ‘model’ alternative modes of being in the public sphere. These modes of being emerge from the particular formal affordances of literature, and are described here as forms of ‘literary publicness.’ The thesis situates these authors on a spectrum of discursive agency, ranging from a view of the public sphere in which writers are seen as authoritative, to a view in which reading processes are prioritised. Each chapter also addresses how these authors have themselves been considered as figures in the public sphere. As such, the story that this thesis tells both helps to clarify the role that culture plays in the public sphere, and reveals the concept of the public sphere itself as a key locus of the relationship between contemporary literature and the internet. 2 List of Contents Abstract ...................................................................................................................... -

Metafiction and the Maximalist Tradition in Contemporary American Literary History
BURNS, DANIEL WARREN, Ph.D. Exceptional Scale: Metafiction and the Maximalist Tradition in Contemporary American Literary History. (2015) Directed by Dr. Christian Moraru. 305 pp. This dissertation reexamines the narrative practice of self-reflexivity through the lens of aesthetic size to advance a new approach to reading long-form novels of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Whereas previous scholarship on the maximalist tradition relies on the totalizing rhetorics of endlessness, exhaustion, encyclopedism, and excess, I interpret the form’s reflexive awareness of its own enlarged scale as a uniquely narrative “knowledge work” that mediates the reader’s experience of information-rich texts. Thus, my narrative and network theory-informed approach effectively challenges the analytical modes of prominent genre theories such as the Mega-Novel, encyclopedic narrative, the systems novel, and modern epic to propose a critical reading method that recovers the extra-literary discourses through which scalarity is framed. Following this logic, each chapter historicizes prior theories of literary scale in postwar U.S. fiction toward redefining cross-national differences that vary across the boundaries of class, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and sexuality. Chapter two addresses the scholarly discourse of encyclopedism surrounding the Mega-Novels of Thomas Pynchon and Joseph McElroy. Posing an ethical challenge to popular critiques of metafictional aesthetics, both authors, I argue, contest one of the critical orthodoxies of
