Received: 29 January 2012; in revised form: 17 February 2012 / Accepted: 21 February 2012 / Published: 29 February 2012 Abstract: Vertically acquired, endosymbiotic bacteria such as those belonging to the Rickettsiales and the Mollicutes are known to influence the biology of their arthropod hosts in order to favour their own transmission. In this study we investigate the influence of such reproductive parasites on the behavior of their insects and arachnid hosts. We find that changes in host behavior that are associated with endosymbiont infections are not restricted to characteristics that are directly associated with reproduction. Other behavioural traits, such as those involved in intraspecific competition or in dispersal may also be affected. Such behavioural shifts are expected to influence the level of intraspecific variation and the rate at which adaptation can occur through their effects on effective population size and gene flow amongst populations. Symbionts may thus influence both levels of polymorphism within species and the rate at which diversification can occur. -

(Poaceae) are important components in the feed that is used to rear animals for meat and milk production. Aphids are among the insects that feed on these forage species and, at high population levels, greatly reduce the amount and quality of forage. -

We studied parasites of 16 the global invader Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in the Caucasus. In 2012 the first 17 established population of H. axyridis was recorded in the Caucasus in Sochi (south of European Russia, 18 Black sea coast). By 2018 the ladybird has spread to the vast territory: Armenia, Georgia and south 19 Russia: Adygea, Krasnodar territory, Stavropol territory, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria and North 20 Ossetia. Examination of 213 adults collected in Sochi in 2018 have shown that 53% of them are infested 21 with Hesperomyces virescens fungi (Ascomycota: Laboulbeniales) and 8% with Parasitylenchus 22 bifurcatus nematodes (Nematoda: Tylenchida, Allantonematidae). -

Department of Biology, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, USA and Department of Gender, 5 Women's, and Sexuality Studies, University of Iowa, Iowa, City, IA, USA 6 Abstract 7 Molluscs are amongst the most ancient, diverse, and important of all animal taxa. Even so, 8 no individual mollusc species has emerged as a broadly applied model system in biology. 9 We here make the case that both perceptual and methodological barriers have played a role 10 in the relative neglect of molluscs as research organisms. We then summarize the current 11 application and potential of molluscs and their genomes to address important questions in 12 animal biology, and the state of the field when it comes to the availability of resources such 13 as genome assemblies, cell lines, and other key elements necessary to mobilising the 14 development of molluscan model systems. We conclude by contending that a cohesive 15 research community that works together to elevate multiple molluscan systems to ‘model’ 16 status will create new opportunities in addressing basic and applied biological problems, 17 including general features of animal evolution. 18 Introduction 19 Molluscs are globally important as sources of food, calcium and pearls, and as vectors of 20 human disease. From an evolutionary perspective, molluscs are notable for their remarkable 21 diversity: originating over 500 million years ago, there are over 70,000 extant mollusc 22 species [1], with molluscs present in virtually every ecosystem. -

Each galloyl derivative was hypothesized to have a different rate of absorption, and their concentrations were compared in the pulp of five mango varieties. The cultivar Ataulfo was found to have the highest concentration of monogalloyl glucose and gallotannins while the cultivar Kent had the lowest. Enzymatic hydrolysis of gallotannins with tannase led to the characterization of six digalloyl glucoses and five trigalloyl glucoses that have the potential to be formed in the colon following gallotannin consumption. The bioaccessibility of galloyl derivatives was evaluated in both homogenized mango pulp and 0.65 mm3 cubes following in vitro digestion conditions. Monogalloyl glucose was found to be bioaccessible in both homogenized and cubed mango pulp. However, cubed mango pulp had a significantly higher amount of gallotannins still bound to the fruit following digestion. Gallic acid bioaccessibility significantly increased following digestion in both homogenized and cubed mango pulp, likely from hydrolysis of gallotannins. Additionally, for the first time, the absorption of monogalloyl glucose and gallic acid was investigated in both Caco-2 monolayer transport models and a porcine pharmacokinetic model with no significant differences found in their absorption or ability to produce phase II metabolites.
