2015 Wingate University Football

Wingate University at Ammons Family Athletic Center, Mars Hill, N.C. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015 (1 p.m.) GAME DAY CENTRAL: www.wingatebulldogs.com

THE TWO TEAMS Wingate: 6-3 overall, 3-2 SAC (2014: 6-5 overall, 3-4 SAC) Mars Hill: 4-5 overall, 3-2 SAC (2014: 4-6 overall, 3-4 SAC)

The coaches: Wingate head football coach Joe Reich is 93-68 overall in 14-plus years with the Bulldogs. He has more victories than any other WU football coach. A two-time SAC Coach of the Year honoree, Reich mentored the ‘Dogs to the SAC title and an NCAA play-off berth (and first round victory) in 2010. Mars Hill head coach Tim Clifton is 123-117 overall in 23 years at the helm of the Lions program.

Last week: North Greenville quarterback Nelson Hughes completed 20-of-23 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns as the Crusaders rallied for a 27-21 victory over Wingate University at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field Saturday. North Greenville improves to 6-2 overall, while Wingate falls to 6-3 overall.

“Our guys all season have continued to play with great effort,” Wingate head football coach Joe Reich says. “We’ve got guys that are making great plays at different times, but it’s just frustrating because we’ve got to learn how to win these closer games.”

The Bulldogs and Crusaders finished with similar numbers in total offensive yards as Wingate had 374 yards and North Greenville ended up with 379 yards on the offensive side. North Greenville trailed 21-14 at intermission, but held the hosts scoreless in the second half.

MORE Last week (con’t): Hughes also caught a seven-yard TD pass from wide receiver Tyrecous Garrett in the second quarter. NGU running back Ashton Heard rushed 32 times for 105 yards and one score. Wide receiver Demajiay Rooks led both teams with six catches for 73 yards and one touchdown reception.

For Wingate, quarterback Kyle Johnson completed 16-of-24 passes for 193 yards and one TD. The Hickory High product led the ‘Dogs in rushing, carrying the ball 13 times for 73 yards and one score. Bulldog running back Lawrence Pittman rushed 18 times for 64 yards and one TD.

Among a strange sequence of events late in the fourth quarter, an interception by Crusader defensive back KJ McDonald sealed the win for North Greenville with 2:58 left in the game. This was only one play after the Crusaders turned the ball over on an interception by Wingate defensive back Kameron Johnson. The pick was Johnson’s first career interception.

WU wide receiver Malik Bledsoe led the Bulldogs’ receivers with five catches for 62 yards. Wide receiver Jody Fuller had three receptions for 35 yards. For the Crusaders, senior wide receiver Tyrell Hillary supported Rooks with five catches for 63 yards.

The Wingate defense made many key stops, including forcing two turnovers. Both of those turnovers were forced by Kameron Johnson who had an interception and a forced fumble. The fumble was recovered by junior defensive tackle Josh Mills. Johnson also finished with 11 total tackles on the afternoon.

Senior All-SAC linebacker Eric Mapoles had a season-high 12 tackles. Senior linebacker Nortavius Otis and redshirt senior linebacker Charlie Hosea each recorded 10 tackles. WU junior defensive lineman Ray Edwards had two sacks and three tackles for a loss.

“We just need to keep preparing the same way as before,” Reich says. “The run game wasn’t great in the second half (today). We need to look to see where we can get better there because that is what has carried us at different times during the season. This week we will emphasize the run game, ball control and playing great defense.”

Last year: Wingate running back Nestor Lantigua (’15) celebrated Senior Day in style, rushing for 110 yards and scoring two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) as the Bulldogs defeated Mars Hill University 24-7 in South Atlantic Conference football action at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. Bulldog safety Brandon Hathaway had three interceptions as the Wingate defense allowed only one third-quarter touchdown to the visiting Lions.

“(This was a) great win for our seniors in their last home game,” Wingate head football coach Joe Reich says. “Our defense played very consistently all day. Mars Hill is explosive on offense and our defense really played well to control them.”

MORE

Last year (con’t): Hathaway got things going for the hosts, as he intercepted Mars Hill quarterback Matt Layman on the second play from scrimmage. Hathaway returned the errant pass 50 yards to the Lion nine-yard line. Three plays later, Lantigua scored on a four-yard TD run at the 13:06 mark. WU place kicker Patrick Smith (’15) added the PAT to make the score 7-0 Bulldogs.

Mars Hill went three-and-out on its next possession. Wingate responded with a nine-play, 63-yard drive to set up a 20-yard Smith field goal. Bulldog quarterback Kyle Johnson connected with wide receiver Hunter Haffly (‘15) on back-to-back passes of 15 and 25 yards to open the march.

Johnson threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a cushion. The Wingate signal-caller led the hosts on two scoring drives of 80-plus yards. The first march (seven plays, 80 yards) ended when Johnson found Lantigua for a 28- yard touchdown. Smith’s extra point gave the Bulldogs a 17-0 lead (12:45 remaining in second quarter).

Wingate wide receiver Jordan Berry recorded his team-best fifth TD reception 10 minutes later, as Johnson made a 33-yard scoring connection with the 2013 All-SAC wide-out to complete a nine-play, 88-yard drive. Smith booted the extra point to complete Wingate’s scoring with 2:58 remaining before intermission.

Mars Hill quarterback Trent Miller helped the Lions score their only touchdown midway through the third quarter. Miller directed a 10-play, 80-yard scoring production, completing the movement with a 10-yard TD pass to wide receiver Chris Trimmings. MHU place kicker Tyler Stewart added the PAT to complete the day’s scoring with 7:30 to play in the third quarter.

Johnson completed 19-of-35 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns. Berry and wide receiver Jiwan Funderburk caught four passes each, while Haffly and two-time Academic All-America® tight end Brandon Ellington (‘15) snagged three receptions each.

“Our offense played well in the first half,” Reich says. “I thought we did some good things in the second half despite not scoring. We moved the chains and won the field position battle.”

Wingate won the field position battle by a whopping 18 yards (Wingate 39 to Mars Hill 21 average starting point) and the time of possession clocking (31:51-28:09). Bulldog punter Chandler Phillips booted four balls inside the MHU 20-yard line to give him 18 kicks inside the 20 this season. WU place kicker Caleb Baird had three touchbacks in five kick-offs, holding Mars Hill to eight yards on two kick-off returns.

MORE

Last year (con’t): Mars Hill running back Jamel Harbison was a bright spot for the Lions, carrying the ball 22 times for 103 yards. MHU wide receiver Keshaun Taylor caught eight passes for 103 yards. Lion wide receiver Dimitri Holmes broke the SAC career receptions record held by Wingate great Chris Bowden in the third quarter. Holmes had 265 career receptions following his performance against Wingate, compared to 263 for Bowden.

The Wingate-Mars Hill series: Mars Hill leads the overall series between the two schools 16-13. Mars Hill is one of two teams (Lenoir-Rhyne is the other) Wingate has played every year since the institution revitalized football in 1986.

Wingate (6-3 overall) is the number nine team in the Super Regional Two top 10 poll this week. West Georgia (9- 0 overall) is the number one team for the second consecutive week.

There is much movement in this week’s poll. North Alabama is second at 6-2 overall. Tuskegee, North Greenville and Catawba occupy spots three through five. The remainder of the poll includes Valdosta State, Carson-Newman, Florida Tech, Wingate and UNC Pembroke.

Five Wingate University football student-athletes earn Academic All-Super Region 2 honors from CoSIDA: Five Wingate University football student-athletes have been named to the 2015 Academic All-Super Region 2 team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). 2014 Academic All-America® NCAA Division II second team selection and WU senior linebacker Eric Mapoles is honored for the third time on the regional level.

Mapoles is joined by four teammates who earn Academic All-Super Region 2 honors for the first time in their respective careers. Sophomore punter Christopher Birozes, redshirt sophomore offensive linemen Cabell Cantrell and Daniel Owens and redshirt senior defensive end Jordan Smith complete WU’s Academic All-Super Region 2 honoree list.

The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structures, assisting CoSIDA with the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2015-16 DII Academic All-America® teams program. In football, Super Region 2 includes schools from the South Atlantic Conference, the Gulf South Conference, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and independents UNC Pembroke and North Greenville.

Wingate is the only NCAA Division II institution with five student-athletes on an Academic All-Super Region team. Four schools had four student-athletes each: Colorado Mines, Colorado State Pueblo, Ferris State (Mich.) and Gannon (Pa.). In Super Region 2, both Lenoir-Rhyne and North Alabama had three student-athletes each on the squad.

Eric Mapoles

Mapoles is a Management major (Finance minor) with a 3.77 GPA. He was only NCAA Division II football student-athlete to achieve the following Triple Crown in 2014: Academic All-America®, Good Works Team® and All-Conference student-athlete. This year, Mapoles is Wingate’s top tackler with 72. He is a team captain and three-year starter.

Mapoles posted a 48-yard fumble return (setting up a TD) against Carson-Newman. He forced a fumble in a road victory versus Shaw. In 2014, Mapoles was tied for second on Wingate charts with 72 total tackles.

MORE Academic All-Super Region 2 (con’t):

Wingate head coach Joe Reich on Mapoles: “Eric has really had a great career. He maximizes his talent and his opportunities because he works so hard. He has also been a tremendous leader.”

Christopher Birozes

Birozes is a Finance major with a perfect 4.00 GPA. He was the SAC Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in a 30-16 road win over Shaw. The true sophomore has had 13 punts inside 20, 13 fair catches and six punts 50 yards or longer. On the SAC charts, Birozes is third in punting average with his 40.3 yards per punt ledger.

His only punt in a 2015 victory over #16 Lenoir-Rhyne was a 23-yard rugby punt which pinned Bears deep in their territory. In 2014, Birozes punted in four games (WU won three) for a 34.2 yards per punt average.

Wingate head coach Joe Reich on Birozes: “Chris has a fantastic work ethic on the field and off the field. He has really become a weapon as a punter. We believe Chris has unlimited potential.”

Cabell Cantrell

Cantrell is a Mathematics and Education major with a 3.32 GPA. He is a two-year starter who has allowed only one 2015 sack, splitting time between guard and tackle. In 2015, Cantrell has had 615 snaps with 16 knockdowns. He has an 83 percent overall grade (combining mental, technical and effort grades). As a redshirt freshman in 2014, Cantrell played the most snaps with 812 through 11 games. He had 24 knockdowns while grading at 80 percent overall.

Wingate head coach Joe Reich on Cantrell: “Cabell is focused. He is driven to get better each and every day.”

Daniel Owens

Owens is a Business Mathematics major with a 3.32 GPA. He is a two-year starter who has not allowed a 2015 sack. He moved to center this year out of team necessity. In 2015, he has had 17 knockdowns while grading at an 85 percent clip through nine games (605 snaps). In 2014, Owens had 23 knockdowns while grading at 82 percent in his overall grade (combining mental, technical and effort grades).

Academic All-Super Region 2 (con’t): Cabell and Owens (and the entire Wingate O- Line) has helped Wingate redshirt junior quarterback Kyle Johnson (Hickory, N.C.) and sophomore running back Lawrence Pittman (Charlotte, N.C.) put together career seasons in 2015. Johnson leads the SAC in completion percentage (.599), while Pittman is number one in the SAC (and number seven in the NCAA) with his 1146 rushing yards.

Wingate head coach Joe Reich on Owens: “Daniel is the guy that makes our OL work. He makes all the calls and gets the guys on the same page. He’s had a tremendous year.”

Jordan Smith

Smith had a career-high six tackles in a 2015 home victory over Limestone, while adding a quarterback hurry to his ledger against the Saints. He had two tackles each against Carson-Newman and North Greenville. He saw action in five games for the 2014 Bulldogs with Wingate winning four of the five contests. He posted two tackles in a 2014 victory at Saint Augustine’s.

Wingate head coach Joe Reich on Smith: “Jordan has been one of our most valuable guys on defense. He is not flashy, but he is always effective. This fact is because of his work ethic and his intelligence.”
