A few words about his life and work may be shed some light on the nature and range of John’s extensive collection. John was the only child of Welsh parents from Clydach in West Gla- morgan. They were Welsh speaking and Welsh was John’s first lan- guage until the age of five when his parents moved to Ashford. From his primary school in Ashford John gained a scholarship to the City of London School. From there he went to Sidney Sussex College, Cam- bridge, where he studied history, with an emphasis in Part 2 on the history of philosophy. He continued his studies at postgraduate level and was awarded an MLitt. Book collecting was in John’s blood for he had begun at the age of ten. On leaving Cambridge, He joined the John Rylands Library as a trainee in rare-book librarianship. He then had a short period of service with the Inland Revenue before joining, in 1977, Robin Waterfield’s Anti- quarian Booksellers as a cataloguer of rare books. John was always on hand there with helpful advice and encouragement especially for young scholars. Many a collection may have begun with a purchase from Waterfield’s, for John’s enthusiasm for book collecting was infectious. -

The first debate between Anthony Collins and Samuel Clarke took place in the early part of the century, and that between Richard Price and Joseph Priestley in the second half. The bulk of the essay relates to Clarke and Collins. In Chapter One I introduce the question of liberty and necessity in the context of a challenge to traditional theism through the work of Thomas Hobbes; Hobbes' compatibilist arguments were later adapted by Collins. -

Hume's Abject Failure, The Argument Against Miracles John Earman, Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science, University of Pittsburgh Abstract : Hume's famous essay on miracles is set in the context of the larger debate that was taking place in the eighteenth century about the nature of miracles and the ability of eyewitness testimony to establish the credibility of such events. The author contents that Hume's argument against miracles is largely unoriginal and chiefly without merit where it is original. To advance the issues so provocatively posed by Hume's essay requires the tools of the probability calculus being developed by Hume's contemporaries but largely ignored by Hume. Biblical Evidence for the Premise that God Wishes to Remain Concealed An Appendix to: The Concealment Argument for Why No Proof for God’s Existence Will Be Found December 5, 2014 Eric Rasmusen1 Abstract of the main paper Logic and Biblical evidence suggest that God wishes some but not all humans to become convinced of His existence and desires. If so, attempts to either prove or disprove God’s existence, past miracles, or present supernatural intervention are doomed to failure, because God could and would take care to evade any such efforts. This “concealment argument” also implies that whether God exists or not, empirical studies of prayer will find no effect, that Christians will have suffering in their lives, that apparent archaeological discoveries validating Christianity will turn out to be fakes, and that non-theistic theories of sociobiological and physical evolution and of cosmology will not be definitively disproved. It also implies that failure of these things to happen are not evidence against Christianity, since they are its necessary implications. If God wishes to be known, He could make Himself known much more clearly and to more people if He simply appeared on Earth and performed miracles. Joseph Priestley and the Intellectual Culture of Rational Dissent, 1752-1796 Simon Mills Department of English, Queen Mary, University of London A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 I confirm that this is my own work and that the use of material from other sources has been fully acknowledged. 2 Abstract Joseph Priestley and the Intellectual Culture of Rational Dissent, 1752-1796 Recent scholarship on the eighteenth-century polymath Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) has focused on his work as a pioneering scientist, a controversial Unitarian polemicist, and a radical political theorist. This thesis provides an extensive analysis of his comparatively neglected philosophical writings. It situates Priestley’s philosophy in the theological context of eighteenth-century rational dissent, and argues that his ideas on ethics, materialism, and determinism came to provide a philosophical foundation for the Socinian theology which came to prominence among Presbyterian congregations in the last decades of the century. Throughout the thesis I stress the importance of rational debate to the development of Priestley’s ideas. The chapters are thus structured around a series of Priestley’s engagements with contemporary figures: chapter 1 traces his intellectual development in the context of the debates over moral philosophy and the freedom of the will at the Daventry and Warrington dissenting academies; chapter 2 examines his response to the Scottish ‘common sense’ philosophers, Thomas Reid, James Beattie, and James Oswald; chapter 3 examines his writings on materialism and philosophical necessity and his debates with Richard Price, John Palmer, Benjamin Dawson, and Joseph Berington; chapter 4 focuses on his attempt to develop a rational defence of Christianity in opposition to the ideas of David Hume; chapter 5 traces the diffusion of his ideas through the syllabuses at the liberal dissenting academies at Warrington, Daventry, and New College, Hackney. -
