THE BEST OF ADAM SHARP by Graeme Simsion About the Author A • A Conversation with Graeme Simsion Reading Group Gold Selection Behind the Novel • Ten Key Songs Keep on Reading • Recommended Reading • Reading Group Questions Also available as an audiobook from Macmillan Audio For more reading group suggestions visit www.readinggroupgold.com. A Conversation with Graeme Simsion Could you tell us a little bit about your background, and when you decided that you wanted to lead a literary life? I spent my early life (that is, up to the age of fifty) in science and technology: I studied physics; worked as a computer operator, programmer, and database specialist; established my own consulting company, which I grew to around seventy staff before selling it, then made a big decision—to do a PhD in database design. But along the way (see third question) I’d caught the screenwriting bug, and when I finished my PhD, I enrolled in a writing program. I think “literary life” is a bit grand—at that point I wanted to get a movie made (okay, that’s a pretty grand ambition, too). But my goal was to write something good rather than to “be a writer”; it wasn’t about lifestyle. I expected I’d be doing database work for a long time to pay the bills! Is there a book that most influenced your life? Or inspired you to become a writer? Yes, but maybe not one you’d expect. It was The Unkindest Cut by film critic Joe Queenan. The book describes Mr. Queenan’s experiences making an ultra- low-budget movie with virtually zero experience.

Tandy In "Michael: A Pastoral Poem," William Wordsworth imagines "youthful Poets, who among these Hills I Will be my second Self when I am gone." 1 In his recent critical study, Andrew Bennett suggests that Wordsworth and the other British Romantic poets continue to have an impact on the poetry and poetic theory of our times: "Contemporary culture, indeed, is pervaded by developments in conceptions of poetry and art that are associated most fully with the Romantic period." 2 As Sayre and Lowy state, "Far from being a purely nineteenth-century phenomenon, Romanticism is an essential compo nent of modern culture." 3 One contemporary musical artist who could justifi ably be named a successor to Wordsworth (as well as other British Romantic poets) is the American singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. Beginning with his debut record in 1972, Browne has released twenty-three albums, consist ing almost entirely of original music. He was honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2007.

  • Late for the Sky”--Jackson Browne (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Dave Thompson (Guest Post)*
“Late for the Sky”--Jackson Browne (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Dave Thompson (guest post)* Album cover Label Jackson Browne “I certainly don’t cultivate disappointment in order to write although that is something that occurred to me briefly maybe five or six years ago,…that perhaps things did go wrong intentionally in order to have something to write about…. At some point it occurs to you that it might be easier to write a forlorn love song than to write something positive but it has to be such a strong balance all the time. I can’t write songs that are mindlessly happy. I’m just not like that although there are a million things that I love. It’s not in me to do that.” --Jackson Browne, 1976 Forget about being “late for the sky,” Jackson Browne was almost late for his own career. By the time the Heidelberg, Germany-born Army kid released his third album, “Late for the Sky,” in September, 1974, just two years had elapsed since his debut. But eight had passed since Elektra Records first set ears on the prolific, prodigious teenager, and almost as long had passed since he got his first big break as a performer, gigging around New York with Andy Warhol/Velvet Underground legend Nico. With Browne under contract as an in-house songwriter at Elektra Records, that label’s artists naturally had first refusal on his output. Tom Rush and Steve Noonan both recorded Browne compositions, as did Nico and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (with whom he played briefly while living in California).
