    REVIEW Applications of Population Genetics to Animal Breeding, from Wright, Fisher and Lush to Genomic Prediction William G. Hill1 Institute of Evolutionary Biology, School of Biological Sciences, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH9 3JT, United Kingdom ABSTRACT Although animal breeding was practiced long before the science of genetics and the relevant disciplines of population and quantitative genetics were known, breeding programs have mainly relied on simply selecting and mating the best individuals on their own or relatives’ performance. This is based on sound quantitative genetic principles, developed and expounded by Lush, who attributed much of his understanding to Wright, and formalized in Fisher’sinfinitesimal model. Analysis at the level of individual loci and gene frequency distributions has had relatively little impact. Now with access to genomic data, a revolution in which molecular information is being used to enhance response with “genomic selection” is occurring. The predictions of breeding value still utilize multiple loci throughout the genome and, indeed, are largely compatible with additive and specifically infinitesimal model assump- tions. I discuss some of the history and genetic issues as applied to the science of livestock improvement, which has had and continues to have major spin-offs into ideas and applications in other areas. CHAPMAN AY LAURENCE LUSH made the following autobiographi- Jcal statement in 19671: I was born in a log house on a farm in southwestern Iowa [Sham- baugh], the second of six children. My father was born in Canada. His parents were brought as children from southern England. My mother's father came from northern Ireland, but her mother was of old American stock, Scotch and Scotch-Irish in origin. In our home we read many books of the kinds which were still consid- ered classics around 1900 to 1910. Although money was scarce, we always had enough to eat, plenty to read, and clothing enough to keep warm. I went to an ungraded country school and entered a high school in Kansas at the age of 11. At Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University) I majored in animal husbandry. Mathematics was easy but not intriguing. History, physical geography, geology and parts of chemistry and biology were most interesting. I was active in debating. About 1914 I got my first intriguing glimpses of genetics. Also I encountered several interesting, friendly and challenging professors, mostly in biology or some of its applications.

    Jay Lush: Reflections on the past Vol. 43 (2), Oct. 2008, Page 3 Jay Lush: Reflections on the past* Louis Ollivier, Formerly INRA/SGQA, 78350 Jouy-en-Josas, France It is my considered judgment that in animal breeding the “endless frontier” is just as real as Vannevar Bush has expressed it to be for scientific research in general (Lush, Genetics and Animal Breeding, 1951a) Introduction Animal breeding is a human activity probably as old as humanity itself. Iconographic documents help us get an idea of how farm animal species have evolved since the early days of domestication, at least for most external traits. In contrast, the history of ideas and practice implemented by man to change his domestic animals is far more difficult to trace. Animal breeding has for a long time been a collection of recipes, before progressively evolving into an art and then becoming a science. One American teacher, Jay Lush, in laying the foundations of scientific animal breeding, has contributed more than any other individual to the last step of this long evolution. Jay Lush taught animal breeding at Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa) from 1930 until his retirement in 1966 (see a brief biography by Chapman, 1991) His teaching and research resulted in a centre of animal breeding and genetics at Ames, that rapidly gained an international reputation and attracted students from all over the world. In this article I will try to summarise the contributions of Lush’s ideas to the development of modern animal breeding and so I hope to explain the reasons why Lush’s influence on animal breeding around the world has been so profound.
