  • The Intimacy of Sound and Listening Among Krishna Devotees in Mayapur
Journal of Ethnology and Folkloristics 10 (1): 3–24 DOI: 10.1515/jef-2016-0001 SEARCHING FOR THE HIDDEN GOD: THE INTIMACY OF SOUND AND LISTENING AMONG KRISHNA DEVOTEES IN MAYAPUR MARJE ERMEL Lecturer and PhD candidate Cultural Theory / Social and Cultural Anthropology Tallinn University, School of Humanities Uus-Sadama 5, Tallinn 10120 e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This article looks at how the Krishna devotees in Mayapur, West Bengal, learn how to chant and listen to the sound of the holy name properly. They suggest that if one is ‘pure’ enough and knows how to listen one experiences the syneasthetic level of sound called pashyanti. At this level, one can reach beyond the duality of the ‘hidden and manifested’ worlds, the external and internal levels of sound; and one can ultimately see God face to face. This is also considered a level at which one can realise that the sound of God’s name and God himself are the same. I will focus on how the devotees learn to create this sense of intimacy with God through the sound of his holy name, and argue that listening is not merely a process connected to our auditory sense but rather a creative and engaging activity, a skill that one can develop. KEYWORDS: Hare Krishna devotees • religion • sound • skill • intimacy INTRODUCTION I am a beggar on the outskirts of the marketplace of the holy name. Can anyone spare me a crumb of faith, a drop of purification, steadiness, or taste, or even a little love for Krishna? (Kancana-Valli Devi Dasi) In her book Crying for Krishna, Genevieve Brewster (2013: 32), with the initiated name Kancana-Valli Devi Dasi, captures the nature of the long journey of learning how to hear and chant the holy names of the Lord.

VAISHNAVISM, ANTIEVOLUTIONISM AND AMBIGUITIES: REVISITING ISKCON’S DARWIN- SKEPTICISM by Oliver Zambon and Thomas Aechtner Oliver Zambon is a PhD Candidate at the University of Queensland, School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, St. Lucia, Australia; email: [email protected]. Thomas Aechtner is Lecturer in Religion and Science, University of Queensland, School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, St. Lucia, Australia; email: [email protected]. The International Society of Krishna Consciousness, commonly known as the Hare Krishna Movement or ISKCON, was founded in 1966 by the religious leader A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. After gathering a counterculture following in the United States, the Hare Krishnas spread from New York City to the rest of the country, before mustering an international community of adherents. This, in part, because the movement attracted several high-profile celebrities such as Allen Ginsberg and members of The Beatles. Celebrating its fiftieth year anniversary in 2016, the Hare Krishnas now claim to have “five hundred major centers, temples and rural communities, nearly one hundred affiliated vegetarian restaurants, thousands of namahattas or local meeting groups, a wide variety of community projects, and millions of congregational members worldwide” (iskcon.org 2014a). Intriguingly, ISKCON has not only represented an emergent form of Western Hinduism, but Bhaktivedanta and his Hare Krishna followers have also frequently been associated with vocal objections towards modern science. This is the author manuscript accepted for publication and has undergone full peer review but has not been through the copyediting, typesetting, pagination and proofreading process, which may lead to differences between this version and the Version of Record.

  • Kartik Inspiration Day 26 . 10 November, 2016
Kartik Inspiration Day 26 . 10 November, 2016 OVERCOMING DISTRACTEDNESS Haridasa Thakura points out the main problem in the japa-practice of many of us. He says, “Simply by one’s own effort no one in this world can overcome distractedness. Such a victory can only come by Your merciful blessings. It is impossible for any jiva to overcome inattention by personal effort. By Your mercy alone, O Lord, it can be accomplished very easily. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to beg for Your grace with great humility for this is the only means of salvation.” How can we beg for Krishna’s mercy as we chant and bring our japa to life? I would like to go through a prayer with you inspired by the fifth verse of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s Shikshashtaka, in which He expresses that He has been thrown into the ocean of samsara and wants the Lord to pick Him up. Here is this prayer: “O Son of Nanda, Krishna, King of the country of love. I appeal for Your affection. I’m Your servant. I feel deep within myself that I have some connection to You. I’m subordinate to You, but somehow I’m now in adverse circumstances. There are so many things within me trying to take me away from You, therefore I cannot give my full attention to You and Your name although I want it. At the same time I feel from the deepest place within my heart that You are my master. You are all and everything to me. My heart, I know this, will never be satisfied without Your companionship so I appeal to You.

Preface The Krsna consciousness movement is conducted under the supervision of Srila Rupa Gosvami. The Gaudiya Vaisnavas, or Bengali Vaisnavas, are mostly followers of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, of whom the six Gosvamis of Vrndavana are direct disciples. Therefore Srila Narottama dasa Thakura has sung: rupa-raghunatha-pade ha-ibe akuti kabe hama bujhaba se yugala-piriti "When I am eager to understand the literature given by the Gosvamis, then I shall be able to understand the transcendental loving affairs of Radha and Krsna." Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in order to bestow upon human society the benediction of the science of Krsna.
