Regularly called upon by Britain’s leading statesmen, and most significantly the Younger Pitt, to advise them on the best course of British economic development, in a large variety of writings he speculated on the consequences of North American independence for the global economy and for international relations; upon the complicated relations between small and large states; and on the related issue of whether low wage costs in poor countries might always erode the competitive advantage of richer nations, thereby establishing perpetual cycles of rise and decline.

A knowledge of the conditions of his task should make the historian of Jesus take a modest view of its importance ; for, though the tree sprung from Alcock"s acorn has now grown to some size and not a little vigour, for the best part of its existence it was overshadowed by taller neighbours in the academic grove. In fact, except in some short periods of unwonted prosperity, Jesus was, until recent ' 1 times, emphatically a small college, low in revenues, and in numbers competing with Peterhouse and Magda- lene rather than with Caius or Christ's.

  • The Development of a Tory Ideology and Identity 1760-1832
1 The Development of a Tory Ideology and Identity 1760-1832 Fiona Eleanor Duncan University of Stirling Submitted for the degree of doctor of philosophy October 2015 2 Abstract This thesis examines the ideas which underpinned early nineteenth century Toryism and their development in the late eighteenth century. It argues that a distinct, coherent, refined Tory identity emerged from the Tory splits between 1827 and 1830. This was preceded by a process of renegotiation and consolidation in Tory ideology and identity from 1760 onwards. The period between the accession of George III, in 1760, and the passage of the First Reform Act, in 1832, witnessed consistent and sustained crises regarding the constitution established in Church and state. The outbreak of revolutions in America and France reinvigorated debates regarding the nature and location of political sovereignty as well as the relationship between the crown and parliament. Lengthy wars against each nation were followed by severe economic depressions, the apparent proliferation of domestic political radicalism, and intermittent, but determined, demands for parliamentary reform. In addition, there were persistent attempts to alter the religious basis of the constitution to accommodate both Protestant pluralism and, from 1801, predominantly Catholic Ireland. This thesis contends that the debates surrounding these issues contributed to the rehabilitation and renegotiation of late- seventeenth-century and early-eighteenth-century Tory ideas. It also contends that, in moments of crisis and reaction, old Toryism converged with the conservative elements of an increasingly fractured Whig tradition in defence of the constitutional status quo. This convergence, apparent in the opening decades of George III’s reign, was consolidated in the context of the French Revolution.

  • John A. Oddy, "Bicheno and Tyso on the Prophecies: a Baptist
BICHENO AND TYSO ON THE PROPHECIES 81 A Baptist Generation Gap APOCALYPTIC EUROPE Inquiring visitors to Ickworth House, the magnificent National Trust mansion near Bury St Edmunds, will learn that its unusual shape - a large central rotunda from which branch out two curving corridors, each terminating in a wing - was dictated by its designer's desire to live in the rotunda and display his art treasures in the galleries formed by the corridors and wings. He was Frederick Augustus Hervey, fourth Earl of Bristol and the Bishop of Derry. Unconventional (who else would award beneficei to the winners of a curates' race along the sands?), popular with both Irish Romanists and Presbyterians, admired as a continental traveller (think of those Hotels Bristol named in his honour), immensely opulent, superbly tasteful, he was one of the eminent persons captured in 1798 when a French Revolutionary army occupied Rome. Though freed, he lost £20,000 worth of treasures he had collected. I Another, even more eminent, person taken was the aged and troubled Pope Pius VI. He, dragged from place to place in Italy and then over the Alps to France, lost his life, dying at Valence the next year .. An army's seizure of the Pope would be astonishing news even today, but in 1798 many people saw it as literally apocalyptical, and with good reason. ' For the Pope's seizure was part of the extraordinary series of events seen since 1789, a series comparable in magnitude with the Reformation and having a conspicuous religious dimension. France, the Roman Catholic superpower, persecutor of Protestants and a threat to Protestant Britain, had been overtaken by revolution.

  • AN INFORMAL GUIDE to PORTRAITS in TRINITY HALL Introduction
PORTRAITS IN TRINITY HALL AN INFORMAL GUIDE TO PORTRAITS IN TRINITY HALL Introduction Nobody who has gone in and out of Cambridge colleges can miss the differences in atmosphere. Do college buildings shape the communities that live in them? Are we – the reader will forgive the pronoun, which is itself part of the mystery of college identity – what we are because of the configuration of our buildings? Do the walls convey a spirit which changes us and makes us behave in certain way? Whether the architecture explains it or not, each Cambridge college has a curious kind of personality. ‘Hall men and women’ know – though they rarely make that knowledge explicit – that ‘their college’ is the best and ‘the nicest’. It is “cosy” friendly, unpretentious and, in some mysterious way, welcoming. Several decades ago, a fomer Head Porter was irritated at the way the students and fellows chatted in the Porters’ Lodge and posted a note to remind undergraduates that the Porters’ Lodge was not the Junior Combination Room [Cambridge-Speak for ‘common room’] and that he would be obliged if they held their meetings elsewhere. Nobody took any notice and, as a wise and experienced Porter, he soon saw that the way students gathered in that space meant that Porters knew them well, could spot trouble and defuse it. I have heard two Porters and an undergraduate discussing her unexpectedly good Tripos results with every indication of genuine affection on the side of the Porters and pleasure at her success. So with these slightly diffuse introductory remarks, I welcome the reader to this guided tour of those who lived and worked here before our time and hope that both Trinity Hall members and visitors will find it entertaining to get to know the portraits and the persons whose faces stare at them from the walls.
