A Therapist’s Guide to Make-Up Removal

There is nothing we look forward to than on a Friday evening when we get off work and head out for a drink and nice meal with our friends. We also know that some nights, removing your make-up is the last thing you want to do before you sink into slumber. However, it is important - there’s no way around it if you want good skin health. So we thought we would give you some expert support and advice on how to get it right from Therapist Supervisor at The House of ELEMIS, Hannah Barnes.

What's really so bad about leaving my eye make-up on at night? Anything unnatural on the body for any length of time is going to inhibit the natural function. The eye area is made up of such delicate skin, we must cleanse the skin to remove any impurities and ensure we avoid any premature ageing or unnece -ssary drying of the skin. For the lashes also; you want them to be able to breathe and grow. Using White Flowers Eye & Lip Oil, lotion, gel, micellar water.... what's the best texture to Make-up Remover with Vitamin B5 to help enrich the lashes remove eye make-up? I believe it's personal choice. Just as you overnight, is a great way to protect them. have your favourite facial cleansing texture to use, you can find your favourite eye make-up remover too. I personally love a Why doesn't ELEMIS make face wipes? We've all heard the more oil-based one, which feels nourishing and helps the worrying stories about face wipes; some being able to remove make-up to simply slide off the skin and lashes. limescale, others cleaning stains off windscreens. Who knows if this is the case? But as a therapist, what I do know, is that a lot What about waterproof make-up? For waterproof make-up, of my clients who have come to me for advice having used these using an oil based or bi-phase (one you shake to mix the oil for years, have extremely sensitive and dehydrated skin. and water-like solution together) is the best way to clear away that stubborn mascara and make-up off the eye area. Make-up wipes typically contain a lot of alcohol and preservatives, to keep the wipe itself moist. This is unnatural and can destroy My eye area always tingles when I cleanse - what am I the skin’s natural microflora and acid mantle - the skin’s environ doing wrong? You're not necessarily doing anything wrong, -ment, natural protective film and pH balance - if these harmful you just might be using something not specifically designed for substances come into contact with the skin. This in turn causes the eye area or something your eyes are slightly sensitive to. I the skin to become problematic with dehydration or breakouts. would recommend trying a different product, something natural and suitable for sensitive skin. White Flowers Eye & Lip Make-Up The closest thing we provide to a facial wipe is our incredible Remover contains White Water Lily, White Peony Extract and Smart Cleanse Micellar Water. I fell in love with this product White Tea, as well as Marine Spring Water, all natural and calm when I first used it. Single or double cleanse? Join the double cleanse club - two is always better than one! This will ensure make-up is fully removed and that your skin’s microflora is in its best possible environment.

What else do I need to perform the best cleanse? Cotton wool pads are a therapist’s best friend. They're effective but also gentle and soft especially against the eye area to avoid any unnecessary pulling. The fibres also help to catch strands of mascara ensuring a thorough cleanse.

What kind of action should I use to rid my eyes of make-up but protect my lashes? Never, and I repeat, never Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm drag your eye area. Who needs to help gravity? It is important £40.00 to let the cotton pad simply rest on the eye area to dissolve the make-up and impurities then gently slide downwards on the lashes to help the mascara glide off. At the corner of the eye work in an upwards sliding motion to help the structure of the skin and avoid any encouragement of ageing on the eye.

Do I need to cleanse my eyes again in the morning? If your facial cleanser is suitable to use around the eye area, then when you are doing your facial cleanse in the morning gently work over the eyes too and that should be sufficient. However, if you are unsure or it doesn't state that you can, I would recommend just quickly using your eye make-up remover again in the morning, to refresh and revitalise the area ready for the application of anymore skincare and make-up.
