D. Cornell University 2018 Food is among the most symbolically potent materials with which humans interact because it is simultaneously biologically necessary and socially constructed. Nevertheless, studies of Minoan Crete, as in other areas of the Bronze Age Mediterranean, fail to acknowledge this dual nature of food. Instead, most current scholarship on Minoan food is divided into two distinct camps: studies of subsistence focus on the nutritional qualities of food, and studies of feasting invoke its role in elite social organization. The result of this dichotomy is that while scholars have been able to list the ingredients in the typical Minoan’s diet and have been quick to identify sumptuous banquets at palaces, tombs, and religious sites, little attention is paid to the practices of cooking and eating in Minoan homes. This dissertation addresses this lacuna by analyzing the evidence of cuisine and dining etiquette at four Late Minoan IB domestic sites. Through a functional analysis of ceramic vessels and close examination of architectural layout, I investigate what kinds of foods were cooked, what cooking techniques were used, how diners interacted with the food and with each other, and how household layout reflected commensality behaviors. Furthermore, this study clarifies the political role of feasting in Neopalatial palaces by comparing the palace evidence to the general system of Minoan commensality gleaned from the case studies. I accomplish this goal by implementing a theoretical model that treats feasting as one end of a spectrum of food-sharing behaviors encompassing the most mundane to the most elaborate meals. Treating meals comparatively allows a closer understanding of the experience of the diners, who would have judged a meal’s value against all those they had eaten previously. Thus, I consider the intentions of the hosts and the messages received by the guests. As a result, my analysis of Minoan cuisine and reevaluation of palatial feasts sheds light on the functions of the palaces themselves, and the sociopolitical systems that they upheld through their banquets. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Micaela completed her undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis, where she earned a B.A. summa cum laude with a double major in Archaeology and Classics. As a doctoral student at Cornell University, she studied Bronze Age Crete, ceramics, feasting, and archaeology of everyday life and the domestic sphere.     Alexandra Salichou The mobility of goods and the provisioning of buildings ٭within the Late Minoan IB settlement of Kato Zakros Abstract The street networks of Minoan urban sites were primary used for the communication and circulation of the people within the settlement, as well as for the mobility of the goods and products that either covered the daily needs of the inhabitants or were part of the economic life of the community. Focusing on the Neopalatial settlement of Kato Zakros, this paper aims to examine the significance of its street network in the political economy of the settlement and in the domestic economy of individual buildings. Certain issues will be raised, associated with the categories of the goods that were mobilised, the means of such mobilisation and the distances that had to be covered; in that perspective, we will also examine the features that the road network had (or should have had) in order to facilitate this transportation, and to what extent the internal organization of the buildings took into account their provisioning needs. A general brief discussion will follow on the formation processes of the street system at Kato Zakros, with references to the neighbouring Neopalatial town of Palaikastro. I have benefited from discussions with numerous persons in the formation of these observations, especially my Italian colleague Vincenzo La Rosa. Phaistos, at the western end of the fertile Messara Plain, is strategically situated to administer the plain's rich agricultural production. Hagia Triadha is on the last hill between Phaistos and the Libyan Sea. Kommos, located to the south, lies at an excellent harbour near a good fresh water spring, with a productive hinterland of small plots and hills. The preeminent position of these three sites in the second millennium may be contrasted with the situation in earlier times. The first known settlement of this part of Crete dates to the Final Neolithic.(1) Phaistos and Kommos were already settled by this period, along with many other small raised hills used as open village sites. The earliest habitation of Hagia Triadha is less well known, but certainly by the Early Bronze Age it was settled as well because its residents were buried in two nearby tholos tombs (Banti 1930-31). Before Middle Minoan IB, we have little archaeological evidence to single out these three sites as among the most important sites of southern Crete. It is possible we are misguided by the clearing and levelling operations of MM I-II that may have destroyed much of the earlier remains, but it is clear that wealth was shared more generally within the Messara in EM and MM than it was in later times.

Vance Watrous After nine years of excavation (1), it has become apparent that the site of Kommos on the south coast of Crete was not another Minoan palace centre. Rather, it is a major port site which fed the nearby urban centre at Phaistos. Consequently, the sequence of imports at the site assumes considerable historical interest. The geographical range and number of imported trade items at Kommos is, to my knowledge, unmatched at any Aegean site excavated since World War I. The purpose of this paper is to describe the imported Bronze Age vessels at Kommos, and to suggest some of the broader implications of these finds. For the present my remarks should be regarded as provisional. Kommos is located at a natural harbour site, about an hour's walk from the palatial settlement at Phaistos. Excavation at the site since 1976 has concentrated on three sectors: the settlement on the hilltop and on the hillside, and the monumental complex below to the south. The total number of foreign vessels found in Middle Minoan (MM) contexts at Kommos is, according to Professor P. Betancourt, no more than a dozen. There are two jug fragments, probably from Cyprus, from an MM IB context, a Cypriote White Painted IV juglet from an MM III level, and a Nippled Ewer from Thera or Melos, also from an MM III deposit. The number of imported vases from LM I contexts at Kommos is relatively small. An important exception to this situation is a Late Minoan (LM) IB deposit of vases which fell down into the southern staircase area of Building J in the lower complex.

    REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change.     Research in the communities – mapping potential cultural heritage sites with potential for adaptive re-use – Heraklion (Greece) The island of Crete in general and the city of Heraklion has an enormous cultural heritage. The Arab traders from al-Andalus (Iberia) who founded the Emirate of Crete moved the island's capital from Gortyna to a new castle they called rabḍ al-ḫandaq in the 820s. This was Hellenized as Χάνδαξ (Chándax) or Χάνδακας (Chándakas) and Latinized as Candia, the Ottoman name was Kandiye. The ancient name Ηράκλειον was revived in the 19th century and comes from the nearby Roman port of Heracleum ("Heracles's city"), whose exact location is unknown. English usage formerly preferred the classicizing transliterations "Heraklion" or "Heraclion", but the form "Iraklion" is becoming more common. Knossos is located within the Municipality of Heraklion and has been called as Europe's oldest city. Heraklion is close to the ruins of the palace of Knossos, which in Minoan times was the largest centre of population on Crete. Knossos had a port at the site of Heraklion from the beginning of Early Minoan period (3500 to 2100 BC). Between 1600 and 1525 BC, the port was destroyed by a volcanic tsunami from nearby Santorini, leveling the region and covering it with ash. The present city of Heraklion was founded in 824 by the Arabs under Abu Hafs Umar. They built a moat around the city for protection, and named the city rabḍ al-ḫandaq, "Castle of the Moat", Hellenized as Χάνδαξ, Chandax). It became the capital of the Emirate of Crete (ca.
