Please RSVP by December 15 to receive the Zoom link. , Speaker Abstract Vertebrate fossils were discovered at the Bromacker quarry by geologist Dr. Thomas Martens in 1975, a time period when the region was part of former East Germany. After the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) sponsored a six-month Pittsburgh visit by Martens to work on his fossils with Dr. Dave Berman, an expert on Late Paleozoic tetrapods. This began a collaboration that has continued to present time. The fossils from the Bromacker quarry are preserved in the Early Permian Tambach Formation and are about 290 million years old. The Tambach Formation was deposited in a small, intermontane basin, the Tambach Basin, that was internally drained and at times lacked permanent water, a rarely preserved setting for Early Permian times. Extremely well-preserved, nearly complete and articulated vertebrate fossils primarily occur in two massive sheet flood units in the Bromacker quarry strata. The flooding events that formed these units are thought to have killed and buried the animals preserved within them. The Bromacker vertebrate fauna consists of a variety of terrestrial amphibians and reptiles and is dominated by herbivores. Because no fossils of fish or aquatic animals have been discovered in over 35 years of collecting, they presumably did not inhabit the Tambach basin. This is in stark contrast to vertebrate faunas from contemporaneous localities in the American southwest that were deposited in coastal and alluvial plains. Faunas from these settings contain fish and mainly aquatic and semi- terrestrial amphibians and reptiles, with carnivores outnumbering herbivores. Thus, the invasion of vertebrates into upland regions away from permanent water and the associated food resource of aquatic and semi-terrestrial vertebrates, seems to have led to the diversification of herbivorous tetrapods and the development of the modern terrestrial ecosystem, in which numerous herbivores support a few top carnivores. Speaker Biography Amy C. Henrici is a Collection Manager in the Section of Vertebrate Paleontology, Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH). She received a BA in Biology from Hiram College in 1979 and a MS in Geology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. She began her career in the Section of Vertebrate Paleontology at CMNH in 1979 as a Laboratory Technician. She became a Curatorial Assistant in 1980 and worked as a Scientific Preparator from 1984–2004. From 2003–2004 she also served as Acting Collection Manager and became Collection Manager in 2005. Her field experiences span the Late Paleozoic–Quaternary. More specifically, she has collected fish, amphibian, and reptile fossils from the Late Paleozoic of western USA and Germany; frog, dinosaur and mammal fossils from the Mesozoic of USA; and mammal and herp fossils, including frogs, from the Cenozoic of USA. Henrici’s Master Thesis described fossil frogs she collected from the Eocene of central Wyoming, and she has since published on frog fossils from the Mesozoic–Cenozoic. She began collaborating with Dr. Dave Berman (now Curator Emeritus at CMNH) on research projects involving Late Paleozoic fossil vertebrates in 1998 while preparing fossils under his supervision. This collaboration continues today and currently focuses on vertebrate fossils from the Cutler Group in southeastern Utah and the Bromacker quarry in central Germany. 2 PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT As I think back about this time last year, I I was thinking recall the excitement for the holidays and about the the end of another year. During these years, Lyman went from Philadelphia through the mid-Atlantic and southern states gathering statistics on iron manufacturing for die Iron and Steel Association.     "The Insanities of an Exalted Imagination" The Troubled First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania THE SECOND QUARTER OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY witnessed a burgeoning demand for basic geological knowledge in the United States. Perhaps nowhere was this more true than in Pennsylvania, possessor of the largest coal and iron deposits in the eastern states. The nascent academic and scientific geology community claimed a special role in this endeavor. "If knowledge is power, so also is wealth," contended the geologists, and no matter how basic or descriptive the research, the commonwealth would ultimately be "greatly enriched" by their efforts.' In contrast, capitalists did not pause to await the results of scientific investigation in their haste to assemble an industrial empire, relying instead on common sense, practical experience, and mechanical innova- tion. In this paper I trace the first geological survey of Pennsylvania, led by University of Pennsylvania professor Henry Darwin Rogers, com- menced in 1836 for a five-year term, but not officially completed until 1858. I emphasize the broader frameworks of commerce, politics, and scientific thought that defined and shaped the survey, rather than its specific geological findings. Indeed, these findings were widely consid- 2 ered to be of marginal scientific and economic value even in their time. In the early 1830s, Tennessee and Massachusetts became the first states to authorize comprehensive statewide geological surveys. DALY William Morris Davis won distinction as geologist, meteor- ologist, and geomorphologist, but primarily as teacher. He made personal, outdoor researches in every continent except Ant- arctica, as well as in island groups of the Atlantic and the Pacific; yet his international fame rests chiefly on his development of a system of thought concerning the reliefs, the scenery, of our planet. His system is the "American" system, but it is appli- cable to the landscapes of the whole world. His early training in geology led him to the principle by which he, more than any- one else, has revolutionized the teaching of, and research on, the endlessly varied forms of the lands and coastlines. To geographers and geologists alike he was an apostle bringing to them the gospel of method in research and method in the presentation of the results of research. For him the root of the matter is evolution, orderly development. Many geologists had used this principle, so essential to understanding the protean crust of the earth, but few geographers had used it in describing land forms. Davis emphasized a mode of thinking and for its expression he devised a system which has greatly appealed to teachers and investigators in many foreign countries as well as in the United States of America. While creating his de- scriptive method in terms of evolutionary changes, he found our English tongue sadly deficient.
