e Joey Arias

M Joey Arias has been revered since the 1980s as a central figure in New York City’s fertile downtown performance scene. Born in North Carolina, Mr. Arias moved with his family to Los Angeles at the age of six. Gary Austin, founder the famed Groundlings improv troupe, invited him to become an original Groundling at the age of 16, making him the youngest member in the history of the group. Soon thereafter he was signed to Capitol Records as the lead singer for the band Purlie. Mr. Arias later became a close friend and collaborator of German countertenor , and the pair was scouted by , who invited them to per - form with him as part his infamous appearance on Saturday Night Live .

A fan of Billie Holiday since childhood, Mr. Arias first displayed his affinity for Lady Day on his 1987 release Arias on Holiday . The album featured “Good Morning Heartache,” original songs, and more contemporary tracks, including The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” and a cheeky inter - pretation of Madonna’s “Holiday”—all sung in a jazzy style evocative of Holiday. Soon thereafter, Mr. Arias starred in Strange Fruit , an homage to Holiday that ran for over a year downtown and appeared in an expanded version at the Antony Hegarty–curated Meltdown festival at the Southbank Centre in London.

In the ’90s Mr. Arias established himself with twice-weekly shows at Bar d’O. He became close to fashion designer Thierry Mugler, frequently appearing in Mugler’s fashion shows. Mr. Arias continues to play muse to Mugler and recently starred in the Mugler-directed short film Z Chromosome . Mr. Arias capped his decade-long run at Bar d’O with a move to Las Vegas, where he originated the role of Mistress of Seduction in Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity and co-wrote three songs for the show. After six years in that role, he returned to New York, where he became star and co-creator of Arias with a Twist with master puppeteer Basil Twist. 02-25 SB Arias_GP2 copy 2/13/15 2:22 PM Page 4
