Writing in Grey Joseph Schwartze UCCS Honors Program
Writing in Grey Joseph Schwartze UCCS Honors Program A Darker World The stories in this section look at the darker parts of our world. Fantasy is unnecessary to see depictions of true evil; it exists in day to day life. The mind does not have to warp itself in perverted defense mechanisms to see darkness in our average lives. These stories examine the consequences of the bad events in our world, from the lasting effects on a single person to the terrible choices some people are forced to make. We do not always know the darkness that surrounds us; only an unremarkable symbol might be the reminder. Other times, the darkness around us can be from our own choices, our own accomplishments, and we must live with that stink forever. These stories explore the grey in our world and how the black and white can mix into unfortunate realities. Choices in the Dark Clarissa took the shot, and she savored the burning sensation in her throat. She needed it, the pain. She needed the numbness that followed even more. Her eyes closed, and when she opened them, some 20-something college boy sat next to her. He was dressed like a preppy frat boy, with his khakis and a light blue polo shirt. She knew the drill. A pretty smile painted her features, and she leaned against the counter while she waited for him to say something. A quick adjustment and her dark red, revealing dress showed off more of her thighs and cleavage. “Can I buy you a drink?” he asked confidently. -

A Matter of Taste: Monstrosity, Consumption and Hannibal Lecter
ISSN 2319-5339 IISUniv.J.A. Vol.5(1), 1-9 (2016) A Matter of Taste: Monstrosity, Consumption and Hannibal Lecter Pramod K. Nayar Taste. The wine, the truffles. Taste in all things was a constant between Dr Lecter’s lives in America and Europe. Between his life as a successful medical practitioner and fugitive monster. (Hannibal 225) The monster, Jeffrey Jerome Cohen (1996: 7-12), among others, has proposed, is one who marks the outside, comes from an elsewhere. The monster is ‘not one of us’. He represents the limits of civilization and civility. Yet twentieth century’s most fascinating fictional monster, with his own cult following due to the TV series, is the very embodiment of civility and ‘high’ culture: Hannibal Lecter. Lecter, who makes his debut in Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon, finally gets to be the centrepiece of a series of horror-thrillers: TheSilence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. He is no alien or outsider though but rather, until he is caught, a Johns Hopkins Medical school graduate and respected clinical psychiatrist. LHM Ling notes: ‘Hannibal the Cannibal cannot remain an “alien” monster. He is, instead, a familiar, identifiable character: one of us. Put differently, the evil other now resides explicitly within’ (2004: 380, emphasis in original).Yet, Hannibal is unlike one of us for several reasons: he is a cannibal with a serious set of affectations, a man of supreme tastes in food, clothing, cars and drinks. He is extremely well-read in a wide variety of areas, from astronomy to gastronomy. He has an enviable knowledge of art and music. -

"Can we go to Polseath as usual?" "I'm afraid not," said his mother. "They are quite full up this year." The three children at the breakfast-table looked at one another in great disappointment. They did so love the house at Polseath. The beach was so lovely there, too, and the bathing was fine. "Cheer up," said Daddy. "I dare say we'll find somewhere else just as good for you. And anyway, Mother and I won't be able to go with you this year. Has Mother told you?" "No!" said Anne. "Oh, Mother-is it true? Can't you really come with us on our holidays? You always do." "Well, this time Daddy wants me to go to Scotland with him," said Mother. "All by ourselves! And as you are really getting big enough to look after yourselves now, we thought it would be rather fun for you to have a holiday on your own too. But now that you can't go to Polseath, I don't really quite know where to send you." "What about Quentin's?" suddenly said Daddy. Quentin was his brother, the children's uncle. They had only seen him once, and had been rather frightened of him. -
Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds Teachers Notes
JANE DOE AND THE CRADLE OF ALL WORLDS TEACHERS NOTES Written by Jeremy Lachlan Published by Hardie Grant Egmont in August 2018 SYNOPSIS With its towering columns and crummy stonework, the Manor looks more like an ancient ruin than anything. A gigantic gargoyle crowning the island, born of the cliffs themselves, as old as the sea and sky. Crumbling statues flank its windowless walls. Dying vines creep up its sides. For thousands of years, the people of Bluehaven worshipped it, praised it, journeyed through it to the Otherworlds, but it has stood like this – dormant, lifeless, closed to all – for well over a decade now. Fourteen years to be precise. Ever since me and Dad came to town. Jane Doe is all but alone in a world that hates her. Outcast from the day she and her father tumbled down the sacred steps of the Manor into Bluehaven, bringing earthquakes and destruction to the town, fourteen-year-old Jane is surrounded by people who hold her responsible for their misfortune. She and her father live in a basement owned by the Hollows, a local couple who take every opportunity to remind Jane that she is a curse upon the land. Jane’s only allies are Violet, the Hollows’ precocious and rebellious eight-year-old daughter; and her father, John Doe, who has been trapped, mute and unmoving, inside his own skin for as long as Jane can remember. She can feel an invisible thread connecting them, but her dad is unable to offer her any answers or comfort. The Hollows think she’s a freak, and resent her presence in their lives.
