Some countries have no rules to the dance, and it may be likened to the wild frenetic gyrations of the 1960’s or an epidemiological tribute to Doris Day’s “Que sera, sera…whatever will be will be…” Not a very good approach to the issue. We here at St. Ignatius of Antioch take a much more serious view of what is happening around us.

As a church we are always mindful of the lives of others. Usually that means the poor, the dispossessed, and the marginalized. We now have to face the fact that anyone at any moment may be susceptible to the virus. We were making great strides forward in recovering from tight restrictions. From online Mass only to outdoor Mass to indoor Mass; one two three, fast like a tango. Then boom! Now we switch direction, again like a tango and it’s three steps back. But the music hasn’t stopped. The dance is not over. In fact, composers are in the wings writing new music in the form of vaccines.

We must follow the guidelines we are given no matter how tired we are of the dance. We will take steps forward again. We don’t know when. In that regard it’s like a square dance, it’s up to the caller to tell us what to do next. For now, it’s no “swing your partner” it’s all “doe-see-doe” (no contact). For the sake and safety of our Church and the community we patiently wait for our next step forward again. There is great progress and hope ahead. The claimed effectiveness of the vaccines being produced is very high and will assuredly save many lives.

This dance has not been easy to learn. Many toes have been stepped on. In the end we may all realize that this has been nothing any of us could have just waltzed through.
