The 1938 Oxford University Biological Expedition spent thirteen days or, the islanc? and reports on the resultinq collection deal with Odona-ta (Fraser, 19431, wa-ter-bugs (Hulgerforc?, 1940), Nemoptera (Banks, 1941) , cicadas (Davis, 19391 , Carabidae (Darlington, 194'73 , Cerambycidae (Fisher, 1941, 1948) , butterflies (Carpenter & Lewis, 1943) and Sphingidae (Jordan, 1940j , During the 19'75 expedition, insects of all orders were studied over a period of about five weeks and many additions will eventually be made to the island's species list. At present, however, identification of the insects collected has, with the exception of the butterflies which have been considered separately, proceeded in the majority of cases only as far as the family level. Application of family names for the most part follows Borror & DeLong (1966). In this paper the general characteristics of the insect fauna are described. Collecting Methods A, General collecting with sweep-net, pond-net, butterfly net and searching foliage, tree trunks and on the ground. A cone-net attached to a vehicle was used on one occasion. Also considered as being caught by 'general collecting' are insects found resting on walls adjacent to outside electric lights at Pirates' Point. B. A Malaise trap (Model 300 Health-EE-X supplied by Entomology Research Institute, Minnesota) was erected on 17th July and operated almost continuously to the end of the expedition. It was situated at Pirate's Point, just south of the lagoon and road, in a glade between bushes of Conocarpus and other shrubs growing at the base of the northern face of the beach ridge. -

All the organisms are chemosensitive, besides being a source of substances capable of being perceived by other organisms. It is observed in Lepidoptera a great quantity of volatiles with signaling potential, or pheromones, which influence diverse behavioral aspects, such as reproduction, feeding and defense. In the Arctiidae family, the release of froth is a common defensive characteristic of these animals. This froth has not yet been investigated in regards to its pharmacological relationships, such as the relationship with secondary substances produced from host plants. This communication is intended to register the occurrence of this behavior of Phaloe cruenta (Hubner) and Hypercompe indecisa (Walker) recorded respectively in the Turvo State Park and in Alegrete, in the Rio Grande do Sul State. Todos os organismos são quimiossenssíveis, além de serem fonte de substâncias capazes de serem percebidas por outros organismos. BARRY LOMBARDINI: EDITOR GORGONE CHECKERSPOTS IN GEORGIA TEXT BY PAULETTE HAYWOOD OGARD PHOTOGRAPHS BY SARA BRIGHT Gorgone Checkerspots (Chlosyne gorgone) are rare commodities in the southeastern United States. Although they are widespread throughout the mid-West, in this part of the country they are • • • considered a fugitive species-as the name implies, here today, and mysteriously gone tomorrow. Habitat requirements seem to dictate the length of their stay but are poorly understood. In April and May 2011 , thanks to Irving Finkelstein's years of experience and his gracious generosity, Sara Bright and I were able to explore the habitat and lifestyle of Gorgone Checkerspots at Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area near Clarksville, Georgia. Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area is located on the banks of the Etowah River, near Altoona Dam. Currently operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it served as an antebellum industrial center and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Its trails wind through a lovely mixed pine and hardwood forest complete with mountain overlooks, picturesque streams, and a beaver pond. Irving has a long history with this site. In the mid-1970s when he decided to explore natural areas within a 50-mile radius of his new home in Atlanta, one reconnaissance mission took him to the Cooper's Furnace area where he was delighted to discover a colony of Gorgone Checkerspots. -

Prepared by: Negril Peninsula Resorts Ltd 9th June 2007 APPENDIX 21 Nocturnal Studies On the evening of the Public Presentation, 8th May 2007, there were two concerns in connection with nocturnal animals. One concern came from Ms Danielle Andrade, representing JET and JEAN. Ms Andrade stated her concern that there were no nocturnal studies taken and that an endangered species, the Yellow Boa, is a nocturnal animal. Also Ms Jean Brown of NCRPS stated her concern that bats could be present on the site, but no nocturnal study had been undertaken. Paula Hurlock, who represented the EIA consultant team who compiled the Terrestrial Biological Environment chapter within the EIA, concurred on the evening that the E.I.A. would benefit from a nocturnal study and stated that one would be undertaken and submitted to NEPA. This nocturnal study has now been completed by, Dr Eric Garraway, Invertebrate Specialist and Dr.Peter Vogel, Vertebrate Specialist both from the Department of Life Science at the University of the West Indies. An updated Terrestrial Biological Environment report has also been completed, as a result of the nocturnal study and both documents are included in this appendix. For the avoidance of doubt, if there is any conflict between the original Terrestrial Biological Environment report, that was at Chapter 2 of the original E.I.A. Report and the updated one included in this appendix, then the contents of this appendix takes precedence CHAPTER 2: TERRESTRIAL BIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT 2.1 VEGETATION 2.1.1 Methodology This survey was conducted over a period of seven days between October 22 and October 29, 2006. -
