The Falcons head to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on the Western Michigan Broncos Sunday at 1:00 pm. Western Michigan DATE NAME EVENT/SCORE has earned MAC victories over Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan, while 1/11/20 East Vault/9.850 the Falcons are looking for their first MAC win after losses to EMU and Ball 1/11/20 Marion Beam/9.875 1/11/20 East Floor/9.875 State. 1/11/20 East AA/39.300 1/25/20 Fochler Bars/9.800 Western Michigan enters the meet ranked No. 41 nationally with an average score of 194.038. The Falcons are No. 50 nationally at 192.358. The critical BGSU Active Leaders event could be bars, where WMU is at its best, ranking No. 38 in the country. Top-3 Finishes BGSU’s lowest ranking, at No. 56, comes on that rotation but a solid perfor- mance could lift the Falcons. NAME YEAR TOP 3 (1-2-3) East Sr. 92 (54-21-17) THE HISTORY Worthington Sr. 12 (4-2-6) BGSU is 28-17-1 all-time against Western Michigan and the Falcons posted Fochler Jr. 6 (3-2-1) a 195.325 at home a year ago to defeat the Broncos. The last time these two Lawson Jr. 3 (0-1-2) teams squared off in Kalamazoo, BGSU came up just short with an impres- Marion Jr. 4 (1-3-0) sive 195.500 score in 2018, while the Broncos recorded a 195.675. Bachner So. 1 (0-0-1) TEAM 120 (62-29-29) EAST, MARION SEND EARLY SEASON STATEMENTS Jovannah East and Samantha Marion made early statements with exception- al performances to open the 2020 season against Eastern Michigan. For the efforts, East was named the MAC Gymnast of the Week and Marion was the MAC Specialist of the Week. East earned her fifth career MAC Gymnast of the Week honor with a 49.300 all-around score, which ranks 16th nationally. She won the all-around title against Eastern Michigan and earned victories in two other events. Marion, who has missed her first two years due to injuries, debuted with stunning precision, winning the balance beam (9.875) and placing second on vault (9.825) behind only East. IT’S BEEN A WHILE Redshirt freshman Tess Muir made her return to the lineup against Eastern Michigan. Muir competed on vault, beam and floor a year ago until an injury ended her season after just four meets. She took to the balance beam against EMU and posted a personal best score of 9.775. A year ago, her best score on beam was 9.625 through the first four meets. Junior Alex Fochler missed the entire 2019 season after performing on uneven bars in 2018. She returned to the lineup this year. After a slow start against Eastern Michigan, she earned medalist honors in back-to-back meets at Rutgers and at Ball State. She recorded scores of 9.850 and 9.800 in those two contests. MAC Standings Marion had not competed in her first two years at Bowling Green due to injuries. NEVER TOO EARLY Team MAC Overall While the season is just three weeks old, a handful of Falcons are already making Western Michigan 2-0 3-3 larger impacts than they previously have. Central Michigan 1-0 3-2 Ball State 1-0 5-1 Junior Alex Fochler scored a 9.550 on floor Sunday at Ball State. It is the first time Northern Illinois 1-1 1-2 she has competed on floor in her collegiate career. Her vault score has improved in each meet, capping with a 9.800 during the past weekend. She has also improved her average on bars to a 9.475 this year, after scoring a 9.150 a year ago. Finally, she has recorded at least 2020 BGSU a 9.400 on floor in each meet this year. MAC Rankings (Top 10) Junior Elena Lawson competed in the all-around against Eastern Michigan for the first time in her career. A year ago, she was involved in three rotations (all but bal- Vault ance beam) and two years ago, she only competed on vault. So far in 2020, she is Gymnast AVG averaging a 9.800 on floor, an improvement over her average of 9.627 last year. t9. Jovannah East 9.783 t9. Samantha Marion 9.783 OFF TO A GOOD START A year ago, Bowling Green struggled out of the gate, scoring 189.675 in a quad Uneven Bars meet at Alabama. But the Falcons had a much better start this year, recording a Gymnast AVG 193.325 team score against Eastern Michigan. Although BGSU lost the dual meet, it was the team’s second-best score to start a season over the past five years. Balance Beam EAST’S OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS Jovannah East will go down as one of the greatest gymnasts in BGSU history.
