    l SRUTI August 2011 Sruti south indian classical music and dance monthly Issue 2 16 November 1983 It's with a sense of gratification at the warm reception given to the inaugural issue of SRUTI that we have prepared our second offering. The lead group of articles this time focusses on what has come to be called Tamil Isai. The principal article (p.4), researched and written by Anandhi Ramachandran, provides a retrospective analysis of the genesis and the controversial initial years of the Tamil Isai Movement, while a companion piece (p.8) by her offers a balance sheet of sorts on Tamil Isai Sangam, the institution set up to implement the movement's goals. The hymns composed by Tamil saints, known as Tevaram, form an important part of the musical heritage of the Tamils and a report on the interview conducted by Muthumeenakshi with an official of the Dharmapuram Adheenam Mutt throws considerable light on the hoary tradition of hymn- singing (p. 12). Rounding out the group is a Sruti Report (p. 11) on what prominent musicians have to say on Tamil compositions and what our chief has to say on whether the proponents of Tamil Isai and their opponents have served the listening public. The latter's analysis is presented in the first edition of an opinion column on music, which we call Bull's Eye. (p. 15); it will be a more or less regular feature. A companion column on dance is also envisaged. Giants have trodden the Carnatic earth, offering music sublime. We have plans to publish special articles about them from time to time.

    BAB 3 LATAR BELAKANG INDUSTRI PERFILEMAN 3.0. Pendahuluan Bab ini memuatkan latar belakang sejarah perkembangan filem. Bahagian latar belakang sejarah perkembangan bermula dengan sejarah awal kewujudan filem di negara-negara Eropah serta perkembangannya ke benua-benua yang lain dan diikuti dengan sejarah perkembangannya di negara India. Dalam penulisan tentang sejarah perkembangan industri perfileman di negara India pula, industri perfileman Tamil juga turut dibincangkan. Bahagian ini diikuti dengan sejarah perkembangan filem di Malaysia dan juga sejarah perkembangan filem Tamil di Malaysia.. 3.1. Sejarah Perkembangan Filem dan Filem Tamil Industri perfileman Tamil Malaysia adalah sebuah industri yang masih muda dan sedang berusaha mencapai taraf antarabangsa. Walaupun sejarah penyiaran Tamil Malaysia didapati telah bermula sejak tahun 1968 lagi tetapi filem Tamil Malaysia pertama hanyalah 187 dihasilkan pada tahun 1991. Sebelum itu, industri ini telah menghasilkan filem-filem pendek dan drama-drama untuk siaran di televisyen. Kini industri perfileman Tamil Malaysia didapati telah mencatat rekod yang agak baik dalam usaha penghasilan FFTM (filem-filem Tamil Malaysia). Namun demikian dapatlah dikatakan bahawa industri perfileman Tamil Malaysia masih belum popular dalam pasaran antarabangsa. Walau bagaimanapun tidak dapat dinafikan bahawa FFTM tidak kurang hebatnya mendapat sambutan dalam kalangan masyarakat India Malaysia. Pada masa yang sama FFTM juga didapati memainkan peranan sebagai rekod kesenian yang mendukung identiti masyarakat India Malaysia. Oleh yang demikian ada baiknya jika sejarah perkembangan industri perfileman Malaysia diperjelaskan. Bidang filem Tamil mempunyai kaitan yang rapat dengan industri perfileman Tamil di negara India kerana semangat dan idea asal untuk menghasilkan FFTM telah tercetus daripada pengaruh industri perfileman Tamil di negara India. Walau bagaimanapun tidak dapat dinafikan bahawa usaha penghasilan filem dan ciptaan kesenian serta teknologinya berasal dari negara-negara Barat.

ABSTRACT This thesis examines two films – Slumdog Millionaire (Boyle, 2008) and Dostana (Mansukhani, 2008) to explore the circulation of national identities within these films and the circulation of the films themselves within larger discourses of the nation, particularly India. This thesis argues that our current cultural moment require changing understandings of the idea of ‘film’, to include its multiple networks of capital and affect, and a changing understanding of ‘nation’ as materially illustrated in these films. The aim of this thesis is to conceive of a way to understand films as a collection of temporalities, and to map the duration of these temporalities as they reveal the emerging networks of circulation that change the ontology of both film and nation. I also argue that the ‘nation’ is an affective construct, and that ‘nationness’ is the ‘trace’ or ‘residue’ that these films bear. This argument also marks a specific approach to the idea of a ‘nation’ itself that includes more than the boundaries of the state, or the ethnicity of the people, but begins to address the way objects possess certain national traces, particularly within cultural objects such as the arts.

    PROFILE B. KRISHNAMOORTHY A devoted teacher of Carnatic music V. Karpagalakshmi idwan B. Krishnamoorthy is a multifaceted artist – Carnatic vocalist, musicologist, researcher, and passionate teacher. He Vwas born on 24 August 1932 at Padarakudi near Karaikudi, where he lived with his maternal grandfather for a while. He had three brothers, the eldest being the late Sangita Kalanidhi B. Rajam Iyer. Krishnamoorthy’s biological mother gave him in adoption to her childless elder sister Ananthalakshmi. So it was that little Krishnamoorthy grew up in his ‘Periamma’s’ house at Paganeri. Fond of music, he liked to listen to the songs of S.G. Kittappa, Subbiah Bhagavatar and others. The Sri Rama Navami Utsavam was a grand annual celebration at home. Attracted to the bhajana paddhati, the child started learning the songs when he was five years old from Atmanatha Iyer and Tirukoshtiyur Iyengar. He knew all the songs by heart – from the Todayamangalam to the final Deepa Pradakshinam. He can remember most of it even now. After a few years, Krishnamoorthy moved to Karaikudi with his grandfather, a purohit knowledgeable in the sastras and astrology. It was in Karaikudi that the foundation for serious music and Sanskrit was laid for him. His school teacher Ramanatha Iyer, father of mridanga vidwan Karaikudi Mani, was fond of music and promoted many young musicians. A student of Mazhavarayanendal Subbarama Bhagavatar and Swaminatha Bhagavatar, he developed a liking for young Krishnamoorthy and encouraged him. In Karaikudi, Krishnamoorthy learnt music from Rama Iyengar (a disciple of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar), and Sanskrit from Sundara Sastri at Koviloor near Karaikudi.

    Rajinikanth and the “Regional Blockbuster” * S. V. Srinivas Introduction In the recent past, Tamil and Telugu films have managed to find aud- iences beyond the southern region and have also competed with the biggest Hindi films in Hindi cinema’s traditional markets in northern and western India. A subset of these films are big-budget spectaculars, which I would like to call regional blockbusters. This term flags the critical import- ance of developments in the south Indian region and film industries for the emergence of relatively new production and narrative regimes which raise interesting questions of value—of films as commodities and stars alike.1 In the pages that follow, I trace the evolution of this form to argue that it is symptomatic of a fundamental transformation of industrial- political logics of south Indian cinemas, whose most visible manifest- ations so far have been the star politician and fan clubs. I propose that Rajinikanth is a useful point of entry into the discussion of the regional blockbuster because he belongs to a small number of Indian superstars who were a part of the very problem that the blockbuster attempts to overcome and, at the same time, a valuable asset for it. By tracking the career of Rajinikanth, I propose to show how crucial this star in par- ticular, but also the south Indian star vehicle known as the “mass film,” is the condition of possibility for a form that may or may not use major stars. The paper is divided into two parts. The first elaborates on the blockbuster as a descriptive-analytical category and shows why it is use- fully seen not just as a global form but also a regional phenomenon, pred- icated on locally specific historical contingencies as well industrial-aes- thetic practices.
