o one quite had a N career to parallel Margaret Whiting’s. Most major stars of her genera- tion followed a pattern sim- ilar to the Great American Songbook itself: they had hit singles in their 20s and 30s, then made deeper and, gener- ally, more artistically profound albums in their 40s and 50s, and, by the time they were in their 60s and upwards, had become elder statesmen. With Whiting, it was if much of the middle section – Act II – was missing. She was revered, by younger singers especially, as something even more than an elder stateswoman, but she was a highly accessible, super friendly, incredibly down-to- earth living legend. I’ve often witnessed the look on a young singer’s face when she real- ized that Queen Margaret was in the house – it was, indeed, like a royal audience – but Maggie’s own pres- ence was never intimidating. She made it her business to know every singer in the jazz and cabaret rooms in New York even into the 21st century, and she inspired and encouraged all of them. Yet one wonders, how much did they actually know about Margaret Whiting? She was a major role model to them, but compared to comparable figures from the swing and early post- war era, like Jo Stafford or Peggy Lee, singers and indeed, listen- ers in the last few decades of Whiting’s life had relatively few opportunities to actually listen to the full expanse of Whiting’s recorded work. The young sing- ers who tried to impress her at Margaret, Jo Stafford, Peggy Lee Danny’s Skylight Room on West 46th Street undoubtedly had heard “My Ideal” or “Moonlight in Vermont,” but, unlike Stafford or Lee, there was remarkably little Maggie easily avail- able in the long-playing era, few greatest hits anthologies and even fewer original albums. -

But in Paul Howes CDS it is said that Dusty's version was recorded before Barbra Acklin's, but released after that one. And no indication that Dusty penned the lyrics. I'm a little confused, and wonder is there any referance to confirm the song's origin of lyrics to Dusty ? Re: Soulful Strut / Am I The Same Girl by Brian Posted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 8:42 am The song was written by Eugene Record (producer of many hits for The Chi-lites) along with Sonny Sanders. It was first recorded by Barbara Acklin (who was Eugene's wife) in September 1968 but not issued immediately. The producer George Davis took the track, removed Barbara's voice and replaced it with a piano solo by Floyd Morris. It was issued in the USA in November 68 going on to reach the US top 3 pop. It was a number onerecord in Canada. It was credited to Young Holt Unlimited (which in fact were the session musicians). Barbara's version was then issued in February 1969, but only reached number 79 in the US pop chart (it did better in the R&B charts). -

Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® One of the most powerful soul singers of all time, Dee Dee Warwick was born Delia Warwick on September 25, 1945, in Newark Heights, New Jersey, into a musical family with its roots steeped in gospel music. Her mother, Arthur Lee Drinkard Warrick, was a founding member of the acclaimed Drinkard Singers, whose line-up included her aunt Cissy Houston. The Drinkard Singers sang regularly at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. As a young teen, Warwick and her older sister Dionne formed their own group called the Gospelaires; the group often appeared with the Drinkard Singers. Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Carl Davis PERSON Davis, Carl, 1934-2012 Alternative Names: Carl Davis; Life Dates: September 19, 1934-August 9, 2012 Place of Birth: Chicago, Illinois, USA Residence: Summerville, SC Occupations: Music Producer Biographical Note Successful record producer Carl H. Davis was born September 19, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, where his father was a postal worker. He attended McCosh Elementary School and Englewood High School. He later earned a GED in 1954 and an associate’s degree from Cortez College of Business in 1957. Davis began his radio career typing play-lists for popular Chicago disc jockey Al Benson on WGES Radio in 1955. He quickly earned a reputation as a “hitpicker.” His success allowed him to join the “hitpicker.” His success allowed him to join the marketing department of Arnold Distributors. In the early 1960s, Davis managed the Nat label and had a minor hit with “Nite Owl” by the DuKays. In 1962, he became a producer for Okeh Records. There, Davis discovered the legendary Gene Chandler and produced and co-wrote the “Duke of Earl” in 1962 and Major Lance’s “Monkey Time” in 1963. Through his work, Davis created a Chicago sound with upbeat arrangements backed by musicians and arrangers like Johnny Pate and Sonny Sanders. A partnership with Curtis Mayfield resulted in hits for Major Lance, Billy Butler (Jerry’s brother) and Walter Jackson. Meanwhile, Gene Chandler’s “Rainbow,” “Just Be True,” and “Man’s Temptation” were all hits. Davis produced the hit “Dear Lover” for Mary Wells and often hired Motown’s Funk Brothers band.
