Long Island traveling tips from President-Elect Chris Edwards Traveling to Long Island can sometimes be an overwhelming experience for those not familiar with the commute. See the information and tips below to make your commute to the Island a breeze! Arranging travel with Yvette at the Long Island Hilton conceriege prior to your trip can help avoid high fees and slow service upon arrival in Long Island. Flight Information The Hilton Long Island is located 45 minutes from JFK and Laguardia (LGA) Airports, and 30 minutes from the Long Island/Islip/Mac Arthur (ISP) Airport. **Flight tips: Southwest Airlines is the major carrier out of Islip (ISP) and flies to Buffalo, Rochester and Albany with good rates right now. These are not direct flights so bring a good book or electronic games but the prices are currently much better than Jet Blue which flies from JFK direct to Syracuse. Cab Information L.I. Yellow Cab (516-249-1212) and Ultimate Class Limousine (1-800-932-4432) who charge $80 for a one way trip to either of the three airports listed above when pre-arranged. This would be a per car fee, not per passenger. Islip Airport is 5 minutes from the Long Island Rail Road Ronkonkoma station, which will connect to the Farmingdale Station. The cab ride is approximately a $5 cab ride. From JFK or LGA a group of 4 or more travelers could pre-arrange for a Super Shuttle (through concierge ahead of time) the number is 1-800-Blue Van or you can book on line with a small discount. This option would allow travelers flying together to prearrange and share the expense of shuttle back and forth to airport. Train Information Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak will service to the Farmingdale Train Station. Cabs can be arranged from the Farmingdale Train Station, for approximately $7. JFK Airport has a ‘plane to the train connection’ where you take the train from the JFK airport, change trains at the Jamaica Station and then take a train to the Farmingdale LIRR Station. If taking Amtrack from elsewhere in NYS to Penn Station then the traveler would take the LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch to the Farmingdale Station. From there, a short cab ride to the Hilton. Driving Directions Those who enjoy a good car trip can just plug in the GPS and drive! From Albany: Approximately 3 hours Click here for directions. From Buffalo: Approximately 7 hours Click here for directions. From Rochester: Approximately 5.5 hours Click here for directions. From Syracuse: Approximately 4 hours Click here for directions. From New York City: Take Long Island Expressway East to Exit 49S (Rte 110 South / Broadhollow Rd.) Turn Right at end of ramp onto Rt. 110 S / Broadhollow Road. Proceed 2 miles to the corner of Spagnoli Rd and Broadhollow Rd and the hotel is on the right. .

Biographical Note: At age 14, self-described “railfan” David Keller, then a resident of Holtsville, purchased a Yashica twin-lens reflex camera, which he taught himself to use. He then set out on a mission to photograph Long Island Rail Road (L.I.R.R.) structures exclusively; however, his subject matter quickly expanded to include things such as trains and train crews. Keller’s father supported the young teen’s ambition, and he drove him all over Long Island to photograph the various L.I.R.R. stations. Keller later became a fixture at the “PD” tower in Patchogue, where he learned all about the history and operation of the railroad. During college, he worked for the L.I.R.R for three summers, first as a ticket clerk and later as a special services attendant. Keller and fellow avid railfan and writer Steven Lynch have published two books of L.I.R.R. photographs: The Long Island Rail Road 1925-1975 (Images of Rail) (2004) and Revisiting the Long Island Rail Road: 1925-75 (2005).
