Portraits in Dramatic Time
La manipulación del tiempo en el video es una de las principales características de David Michalek, el artista norteamericano vuelve a utilizar este recurso con su nuevo trabajo Portraits in Dramatic Time. Una proyección en la fachada del David H. Koch Theater de Nueva York, mostraba este verano la amplificación del gesto dramático ralentizando el tiempo real.
David Michalek fotografió movimientos de diversos actores a 3.000 fotogramas por segundo en ultra alta definición y luego prolongó cada acción de 10-15 segundos a 8 minutos o más. Las imágenes fueron proyectadas en pantallas enormes pudiendo percibir absolutamente todos los detalles de cada movimiento. La trama, el contexto o las circunstancias, las consecuencias de los movimientos, el estado de ánimo de los personajes y las emociones involuntarias, muestran como cada secuencia está diseñada para ser una metáfora física de una condición emocional. El gesto aparece como revelaciones inesperadas y prolongadas en el tiempo, casi retratos fílmicos que desprenden poesía, ambigüedad, sorpresa y asombro.
El artista es reconocido también por su trabajo Slow Dancing, una serie de 43 videos en hyper-slow-motion de bailarines y coreógrafos de todo el mundo, proyectados en múltiples pantallas. El movimiento de cada uno, de aproximadamente 5 segundos de duración en tiempo real, fue filmado utilizando una cámara de alta definición y velocidad que grababa 1.000 fotogramas por segundo. El resultado son aproximadamente 10 minutos de danza extremadamente lenta. Los videos, presentados en ciudades como Venecia, Londres, París y Nueva York se proyectan en trío para permitir al espectador comparar bailarines de diferentes estilos y culturas.
