41st Annual FINE ARTS FESTIVAL Presented by the Arts Council of Moore County The Arts Council of Moore County (ACMC) created the Fine Arts Festival (FAF) in 1980 to provide incentive for local artists to improve their technique and a place to showcase and sell their artwork. At Carlow Arts Festival we believe that the Arts are for everyone. This has been at the heart of our vision since the Festival was founded 42 years ago. The Festival aims to be extraordinary, and for a short period each summer, we engage with spaces, places and the people of Carlow through art, performance and spectacle. We have become known locally and internationally for how we couple together audacious artists and their vision in a way that is truly accessible for all. The three-day event gives patrons the rare and special opportunity to meet and purchase art from exhibiting artists. Our goal is to provide the public and our selected exhibitors an experience of unparalleled quality. Proceeds from the Arts Festival help CherryArts to fulfill its year-round art education and outreach mission through programs that provide access to the arts for schools in Colorado. What do they mean to you and your school? Examples of ART MOVEMENTS: • Abstract Art: An artist tells a story or expresses an idea through color, form, line, etc. in the absence of realistic details. The Laura Bulian Gallery Is Pleased to Announce the Exhibition Life From
The Laura Bulian Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Life from My Window, curated by Andrey Misiano, that studies the contemporary experience of artists who were born in the Caucasus during the Soviet period yet that are rapidly losing touch with their socialist past. First and foremost, all the artists participating in the exhibition – Babi Badalov (Lerik, Azerbaidjan, 1959), Lusine Djanyan (Ganja, Azerbaijan, 1981), Aslan Gaisumov (Grozny, Russia, 1991), Musay Gaivoronskiy (Dagestan, Russia, 1987) , Taus Makhacheva (Moscow, Russia, 1983), Koka Ramishvili (Tblisi, Georgia, 1959) have in common a painful search for their place in the world in the conflictual conditions of the new world order. They depict people that have experienced the end of history in one way or another and are now living in a disjointed globalized world. At the same time, they retain recollections of Soviet life and the first post-Soviet decades that are currently seen in an extremely contradictory historical perspective. On the one hand, the practice of analyzing, reconsidering and debunking the Soviet project is rapidly spreading in the academic and artistic communities. On the other, at the political level, the regimes that have arisen on post-Soviet territories are selectively speculating on recollections of positive aspects of socialist life in order to patch holes in their profane ideological programs. To sum up, although it is difficult to say in what form the Soviet past is returning today, it is clear that the great expectations of the period continue to exist in the future conditional tense. The exhibition’s title stems from the well-known work of an artist participating in the project: Koka Ramishvili’s War from My Window. -

Jodie Dalgleish, The Biennial as a Form of Contradiction JODIE DALGLEISH The Biennial as a Form of Contradiction: The 16th Biennale of Sydney, ‘Revolutions – Forms That Turn’ Abstract Large-scale international biennials of contemporary art continually present an excess of art and information within the realm of cultural tourism rather than art history. As a result, they resist scholarly analysis, particularly in terms of ‘form’. However, a kind of discourse has emerged around the ‘problems’ or ‘paradoxes’ of biennials, and common themes relating to opposing or contradictory forces have emerged. These themes provide the basis of a provisional framework of contradictions or ‘dialectics’ by which biennials can be analysed and discussed. This article presents four dialectical ‘themes’ in relation to The 16th Biennale of Sydney, ‘Revolutions – Forms That Turn’: modernity and postmodern critique; the paradox of ‘place’ as both local and global, being global while questioning ‘globalisation’; and the autonomy and politicality of art. The analysis provides insight into curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev’s dedication to ‘dialectical play’ within the 16th Biennale of Sydney (described as the practice of exploring and heightening an individual’s experience of contradiction). Further, the potential for both curatorial work and biennials to provide unresolved ‘in-between’ spaces for inventiveness and new dialogue becomes more apparent. In surveying the literature on large-scale international biennials produced in recent years, it quickly becomes apparent
