The Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in Manchester is looking for an exceptional and experienced Mac IT Support Officer who will be responsible for the support, management and integration of Apple based systems within the Institute.

Working in a heterogeneous network, the main purpose of the role of the Macintosh IT Support Officer is to maintain and develop the Apple based systems within the Institute and to provide an efficient and effective high level of service which includes providing specialist advice and guidance on all Apple based systems. The successful applicant will:  Have been educated to degree level (or equivalent) and possess experience in supporting and integrating Apple based systems.  Possess the determination and commitment to continually develop their IT skills in the latest Apple based technologies.  Have an excellent understanding of integrating and supporting Mac based systems in a complex environment such as Linux and Windows.  Apple Mac certification is desirable.

JOB DETAILS

Job Title: Macintosh IT Support Officer

Department: IT (Operations)

Division: Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (PICR)

ORGANISATIONAL ARRANGEMENTS

Accountable to: 1. Head of IT

JOB PURPOSE

The aim of this post is to maintain and develop the Apple based systems within the Institute and to provide an efficient and effective high level of service.

To provide specialist advice and guidance on all Apple based systems.

To be part of the IT helpdesk, providing general IT support services to the Institute.

JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will be required to continuously develop their Macintosh experience and provide a secure, stable and seamless experience for Mac users within the Institute. Flexibility and a requirement to develop knowledge of other operating systems will also be required to facilitate seamless interactions between Mac’s and other Operating Systems.

Working as a member of the IT department the post holder will be responsible for providing 1st line IT support to staff at the PICR, and ensuring IT helpdesk enquiries are resolved within agreed timescales. The remainder of the post holder’s time will be spent contributing towards IT service helpdesk and improvement services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 To provide IT support services for the Institute’s Mac OS X desktop Infrastructure.

 To follow and develop best industry practices to allow the seamless integration of Apple based systems into a heterogeneous network infrastructure.

 Develop and enhance support for Apple mobile devices such as iPads.

 Monitor and ensure appropriate levels of security controls are maintained to prevent unauthorised access of systems.

 Review and continuously recommend new technological innovations to enhance the Mac environment.

 Plan and implement required upgrades and the migration strategy to ensure minimum impact on services.

 Develop scripts and utilise software programs to automate routine tasks.

 Implement a planned preventative maintenance programme for services.

 Manage projects to timescale and budget.

 Provide specialist advice and guidance on Apple based systems.

 On-going interactions and communicate with the Mac based community.

 Provide input to the Head of IT on the development of a functional strategy for Apple devices.

 Any other duties as required by the Head of IT, which are commensurate with the grade of the job.

Library facilities include the John Rylands University Library (the major library in the North West and the third largest in the country) and the Manchester Central Reference Library. STANDARD CR-UK TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The following is a basic summary of the standard terms and conditions applicable to the post you have applied for:

 The post, Macintosh IT Support Officer is on a Cancer Research UK salary. It’s a P2 grade. Salary will be within the range £25,000 - £29,000 (dependent upon qualifications and experience) per annum.

 Your employment will be with The University of Manchester appointed under The Paterson Institute for Cancer Research terms and conditions.

 Salary is paid monthly.

 There are 32 days holiday per year plus Bank Holidays for England.

 Duration of contract: non-time limited position.

 37 hour week

 There is a probationary period attached to this post of 6 months. It’s standard for many organisations now and consists of two 3-monthly reviews with your line manager.

 You are eligible to join the UMSS pension scheme.

 Any offer made by the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research would require the successful candidate to undergo a medical clearance. This is arranged with Occupational Health department at the University of Manchester prior to starting employment and consists of a basic medical. This is to address and gain clearance for any potential hazards identified for the role on offer.
