Portuguese Family Names
Portuguese Family Names GERALD M. MOSER 1 Point Cabrillo reflects the Spanish spelling of the nickname of J oao Rodrigues Oabrilho - "the I(id," perhaps a play on words, if the Viscount De Lagoa was correct in assuming that this Portuguese navigator was born in one of the many villages in Portugal called Oabril (Joao Rodrigues Oabrilho, A Biographical Sketch, Lisbon, Agencia Geral do mtramar, 1957, p. 19). 2 Oastroville, Texas, -- there is another town of the same name in California - was named after its founder, Henry Oastro, a Portuguese Jew from France, who came to Providence, R.I., in 1827. From there he went to Texas in 1842, launching a colonization scheme, mainly on land near San Antonio. I came upon the story in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library, on the eve of reading to the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese a paper on "Cultural Linguistics: The Case of the Portuguese Family Names" (December 28, 1957). The present article is an enlarged version of that paper. 30 38 Gerald M. E) A fifth type of family name exists in Portugal, which has not yet been mentioned. It includes names due to religious devotion, similar to but. not identical with the cult of the saints which has furnished so many baptismal names. These peculiar devotional names are not used as first names in Portugal, although some of them are commonly used thus in Spain. -

The Military Economy of Seventeenth Century Sri Lanka: Rhetoric and Authority in a Time of Conquest
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Military Economy of Seventeenth Century Sri Lanka: Rhetoric and Authority in a Time of Conquest A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Cenan Pirani 2016 © Copyright by Cenan Pirani 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Military Economy of Seventeenth Century Sri Lanka: Rhetoric and Authority in a Time of Conquest by Cenan Pirani Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam, Chair From the end of the sixteenth century, the overseas administrative arm of the Portuguese Crown, the Estado da Índia Oriental, sought to gain complete territorial control of the island of Sri Lanka and outlined the tenets of the military project dubbed in administrative letters, “the Conquest of the Island of Ceylon”. Such efforts however would be impeded by military rebellions (ie. mutinies and desertions) by native military personnel in Portuguese service, where a rebellion that occurred in 1630 severely weakened the Estado's position in the island from which it could not recover. The specific event, the death of a Portuguese general at the hands of his own Christianized native troop, left a deep imprint on Portuguese memory. Decades later, the chronicler Fernão de Queiroz claimed the event, which paved the way for the European's eventual removal from the island by 1658, bore testament to the unbridgeable cultural and religious schism between the Portuguese and the native Sinhala people, an established viewpoint in current historiography. This study focuses attention on the documentation in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and ii Sinhalese written during the more active moments of the conquest period (1580-1640) in order to test such well-established views. -

A Guide to Names and Naming Practices
March 2006 AA GGUUIIDDEE TTOO NN AAMMEESS AANNDD NNAAMMIINNGG PPRRAACCTTIICCEESS This guide has been produced by the United Kingdom to aid with difficulties that are commonly encountered with names from around the globe. Interpol believes that member countries may find this guide useful when dealing with names from unfamiliar countries or regions. Interpol is keen to provide feedback to the authors and at the same time develop this guidance further for Interpol member countries to work towards standardisation for translation, data transmission and data entry. The General Secretariat encourages all member countries to take advantage of this document and provide feedback and, if necessary, updates or corrections in order to have the most up to date and accurate document possible. A GUIDE TO NAMES AND NAMING PRACTICES 1. Names are a valuable source of information. They can indicate gender, marital status, birthplace, nationality, ethnicity, religion, and position within a family or even within a society. However, naming practices vary enormously across the globe. The aim of this guide is to identify the knowledge that can be gained from names about their holders and to help overcome difficulties that are commonly encountered with names of foreign origin. 2. The sections of the guide are governed by nationality and/or ethnicity, depending on the influencing factor upon the naming practice, such as religion, language or geography. Inevitably, this guide is not exhaustive and any feedback or suggestions for additional sections will be welcomed. How to use this guide 4. Each section offers structured guidance on the following: a. typical components of a name: e.g. -
José Mourinho “Please Don't Call Me Arrogant, but I'm European
José Mourinho “Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm European champion […] and I think I am a special one.” José Mourinho, introductory press conference at Chelsea FC, June 2004 “He takes over a club, briskly populates the trophy cabinet, captivates neutrals with his seething intelligence, then departs amid faltering performances and a foul atmosphere of his own creation. Chelsea from 2004 to 2007, then Inter Milan until 2010, then Real Madrid until 2013, now Chelsea again: a life of glory and transience.”i Janan Ganesh, political columnist for the Financial Times [What’s Mourinho’s biggest strength?] “Charisma!”ii Patrick Barclay, Mourinho’s biographer When in May 2016, José Mourinho was appointed as Manchester United’s manager many rejoiced at the prospect of seeing the most successful coach of the 21st century at the helm of a team that is still viewed as one of the most powerful in the world, in spite of falling out of grace since Sir Alex Ferguson’s dynasty came to an end in 2011. Others thought differently, they doubted Mourinho could adapt to Manchester United’s culture. Mourinho is, of course, the mythical coach capable of bringing teams of average and often relegated players to glory, as he did with both FC Porto and FC Internazionale Milano (Inter). Still, he never reached the European summit when managing some of the most expensive squads ever assembled while at Chelsea FC and Real Madrid (see Exhibit 1). By the time he arrived at Manchester United he had had an illustrious 16- year long career. -

The Deceased Preaches His Own Eulogy: Training Students to Provide Access Points on Discovery Level Records Felicia Piscitelli1, Lisa Furubotten2, Anton duPlessis3, Alma Beatriz Rivera Aguilera4, Ángel Villaba Roldán5 Abstract This paper is an outgrowth of Discovering a New World: Cataloging Old and Rare Imprints from Colonial and Early Independent Mexico, a project funded by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The grant succeeded in developing a methodology by which Hispanophone student workers, with minimal training, can create discovery level records for collections by inputting bibliographic metadata into a web-based template. In addition to descriptive elements, access points for corporate and personal names and some type of subject access are needed to truly make this collection discoverable by users. Can students with rudimentary training provide such access points? If so, are they limited to inputting uncontrolled terms, or can they be trained to utilize controlled vocabularies? We experimented with four input methods to evaluate which ones effectively enable students to populate the access point elements: • Uncontrolled vocabulary. For example, name headings entered in a surname(s), forename(s) format; keywords; summaries. • Controlled vocabulary embedded in the metadata collection tool. For example, genre terms taken from the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) Controlled Vocabularies, and geographic subject headings taken from Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). • Dynamic feedback list. For example, a list of controlled name headings for printers from the National Authority File (NAF), with feedback whereby a cataloger updates the list • Use of authorized thesaurus. For example, students captured authorized name headings from the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF). -
“Liga Portugal: Reformulation of Ledman Liga Pro Using the Value Creation Wheel”
“Liga Portugal: Reformulation of Ledman Liga Pro using the Value Creation Wheel” Abstract One of the major goals of Liga Portugal, an independent institution that organizes the professional football competitions, was to rethink and reformulate the format, strategy, and positioning of those competitions. Ledman LigaPro, the 2nd league, was their main concern, as it was the competition which showed more problems and more room for improvement. According to Liga’s President, Pedro Proença, this competition revealed four major challenges: “competitive positioning, a problem around the business sustainability, (...) attractiveness in terms of sponsorship, and interest of this product for the general public”. To tackle these challenges, the VCW-Value Creation Wheel method was used throughout the project, yielding several strategies to Liga’s key decision makers. The Board considered the VCW successful since it produced more outputs than those expected. Likewise, they were highly motivated to implement those solutions and incorporate the VCW methodology as a tool to solve future challenges inside the organization. Keywords Value Co-Creation, Value Creation Wheel, Football Industry, Strategy, New Product Development, Marketing, Strategic Consulting, Brand/Innovation & Change Management and Research Methods “Liga Portugal: Reformulation of Ledman Liga Pro using the Value Creation Wheel” In July 2015, Pedro Proença was appointed the President of Liga Portugal (see Appendix 3.1), an independent institution that is responsible for the organization, regulation and management of the professional football competitions. His first action was to analyze the company, as well as to assess their portfolio of competitions (Liga NOS, the 1st tier league, Ledman LigaPro, the 2nd tier league and Taça CTT, the league cup), incluind their current situation, annual performance and expected future growth. -

The Portuguese Football League Case
Athens Journal of Sports - Volume 2, Issue 2– Pages 99-110 Could Fewer Teams Make a League More Competitive? The Portuguese Football League Case By Daniel Magueta Sérgio Gonçalo† Carmen Guimarães‡ Pedro Pego The competitive balance of professional sports leagues has been a topic of interest in the area of sports economics. Our work aims to contribute to this field of research. Naturally, supporters’ expectations are that their club wins every game, but when a league becomes too unbalanced and its winner and all the other standings of interest are early known, that league tends to lose the supporters’ attention. The uncertainty of the results and of the final standings is a key factor in the attractiveness of every league. With the expectation of turning the Portuguese Football League more attractive, in 2006/07 the championship suffered a reduction in two contending clubs, from 18 to 16 teams. In our study we analyze the impact that this two-team reduction had on the competitiveness of the Portuguese league. In order to do this we have analyzed the standings of the League since 1991/92 and applied different methodologies to measure the competitive balance. We conclude that this measure does not improve the degree of competiveness expected by the league executives. Keywords: Competitive balance, Concentration indices, League size, Sports economics. Introduction The competitive balance, defined as the degree of strength parity between teams, of professional sports leagues has been a topic of interest in the area of sports economics and several studies have been conducted with the intention of measuring it. -
