This plan provides coverage based on your family’s net income from 2 years previous (e.g. for 2016 the deductible is based on 2014 income). This can however, be reassessed if your income has dropped by 10% from the year your deductible was assessed. As well, you can arrange to have the deductible be spread out over the year. The deductible is the amount of money each family has to pay out of pocket before the Pharmacare program covers any costs for supplies and prescriptions. First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) or NHIB is also now using Pharmacare to cover their members’ supply costs. Pharmacare requires a one-time registration. Registration for Pharmacare can be done on-line at www.health.gov.bc.ca/pharmacare/ or by calling toll-free 1-800- 663-7100. Your ostomy order will then be processed through Pharmacare like a prescription (you do not need a prescription for ostomy supplies). The receipt the pharmacy provides to you will indicate how much you pay and how much Pharmacare is covering. 3rd Party Coverage: Third party coverage is in addition to your Pharmacare coverage, meaning the third party covers the cost of ostomy supplies that you spend as you work your way up to your deductible with Pharmacare. Third party coverage may include, but are not limited to, Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Veterans’ Affairs Canada etc. If you have 3rd party coverage we recommend you check with your provider to see what coverage you have for ostomy supplies. The receipts you receive from your supplier following purchase of products will then need to be submitted to your extended health plan. Claims to extended health plans must be hand submitted on claims forms provided by the plan. Third party coverage does not allow any pharmacy to directly bill them for ostomy supplies. August 2020 Page 2 Ostomy Suppliers in British Columbia Other financial resources: Those patients with disability coverage will require a letter for coverage of their supplies under that program. Some patients are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit; discuss this with your Nurse Specialized in Wound Ostomy Continence (NSWOC), Physician or Nurse Practitioner. For more information about this credit, check out the Ostomy Canada web page at www.ostomycanada.ca as they provide information specific to the CRA Disability Tax Credit T2201. Shipping: Ostomy Suppliers may offer no-charge shipping within the province. August 2020 Page 3 Ostomy Suppliers in British Columbia Types of Ostomy Product Suppliers In British Columbia, there are 3 main types of ostomy product suppliers as listed below. During the first year after surgery, we recommend using a full-service supplier (if available) as they are able to provide supports that are not available from other types of suppliers. After the first year, patients may choose to continue to use a full-service supplier if desired. 1. Full-service ostomy product suppliers employ NSWOCs (Nurse Specialized in Wound Ostomy Continence); you may know them as ETs or “stoma/ostomy nurses”. NSWOCs are available by appointment and offer a full range of support for people with ostomies; product advice, managing leakage or skin problems, hernia support, lifestyle advice and other ostomy related education. The NSWOC availability varies from store to store and fees may apply for NSWOC services at some stores. Full-service suppliers also have other staff with knowledge of ostomy products and keep a wide variety of products in stock. 2. Ostomy product suppliers, including medical supply stores and some pharmacies, have staff knowledgeable in ostomy products and stock a variety of ostomy supplies but do not employ a NSWOC. 3. All other pharmacies do not stock ostomy supplies but can order in products for patients; it may take longer to obtain the products and the staff may not be knowledgeable about ostomy supplies.
