Kutztown University was the winner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for the 2005-06 academic year. The trophy is presented on an annual basis to the league’s most successful all-around program. The Dixon Trophy is named after F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. It is awarded annually to the PSAC member institution that accumulates the most points based on results of conference play- offs and/or regular-season records. Each institution’s point total is calculated by adding its top six men’s finishes and top six women’s finishes in 21 conference sports. Pictured above are several representatives of Kutztown University’s athletic teams accept- ing the Dixon Trophy at a presentation last September. On hand to present the trophy to KU’s coaches and athletes were President F. Javier Cevallos (far left), Vice President for Student Ser- vices and Campus Life Chick Woodard (front, third from right) and Director of Athletics Greg Bamberger (far right).

Student Recreation Center photo by KU university relations The 64,623-square foot student recreation center opened in the fall of 2006. The facility, located between Keystone Hall and University Field, is THE place to be for student recreation and fitness on campus. Among the amenities are a nearly 9,000 sq. ft. fitness center and weight room, two group fitness studios, two racquetball courts, an indoor rock climbing wall, a synthet- ic surface gymnasium with curved walls for indoor sports, a synthetic surface half gymnasium, a suspended jogging track (approx. 1/10 mile), an office suite for recreational services staff, a meeting room, retail space/snack bar and locker rooms with jacuzzis. Athletic Facilities

Kutztown University is blessed with some of the top athletic facilities among Division II colleges and universities in the eastern United States. Twenty-one of KU’s 23 teams have their home venue on campus. University Field During the summer of 2005, Kutztown University em- barked upon major renovations to University Field, the home of the Golden Bear football, track & field and field hockey teams. Kutztown replaced the natural grass field with new, state-of- the-art, synthetic athletic turf. In addition, the track surround- ing the field was re-surfaced and lights were installed. Along with the use by the intercollegiate teams, the field is utilized by student intramurals and recreation. A-Turf, a New York-based company and one of the leaders in the synthetic athletic turf industry, installed the new field. The field system is Premium RS-45, which contains sand and rubber infill mixed into the synthetic grass over the padding, which is designed for long-term durability and to reduce the effects of impact on the body. Around the new field lies a 5,600-seat stadium. The stadium has been the site of PSAC Championship track & field meets. The stadium features a scoreboard and message center that debuted fall 2001. Keystone Hall The home of the Golden Bears, Keystone Hall is the hub of indoor athletic activity on photo by KU university relations campus. The 3,400-seat Keystone Arena, located in the center of Keystone Hall, is the home of the volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling teams. It was also the location of President George W. Bush’s visit in 2004. Keystone Hall houses the Golden Bear sports medicine department, designated locker rooms for intercollegiate athletic teams, and a state-of-the-art fitness room. The football coaching staff and locker room are located in the west wing of Keystone Hall.

All broadcasts will include the Golden Bear Spotlight and Around Campus at halftime, featuring KU sports and campus personalities, respectively. 34 Golden Bear Tradition

The tradition we know as Kutztown University football today began more than 100 years ago, when KU was known as Keystone Normal School. Keystone won all five games it played during the initial 1895 season, including a 10-4 win over Reading High School. The school fielded a team until 1905, when the sport was suspended due to a serious on-field injury. In 1923, football became, for the most part, a permanent fixture of the campus. Those initial seasons set the foundation for football and athletics in general at KU. The early teams were nicknamed the “Golden Ava- lanche,” and featured many competitive players and teams. The current nickname of “Golden Bears” was adopted in 1961. Since then, KU has had its share of prominent players who have received national attention and fame on the football field. Additionally, numerous Golden Bears have gone on to successful coaching, teaching, business and many other careers. The individuals listed on this and the following pages are prime examples of the many fine men who call Kutztown University their alma mater.

Former Kutztown University Golden Bear and Buffalo Bills standout Andre Reed has been enshrined in mutiple halls of fame, including Kutztown University’s. Here, Reed is pictured following his 2002 induction in the NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame in Photo courtesy of Division II Football Hall of Fame of Hall Football II Division of courtesy Photo Florence, AL. In 2006, Reed was enshrined in the Buffalo Bills’ Ring of Fame.

Former Kutztown University Gold- en Bear and Denver Bronco John Mo- bley made history in April 1996 when he became the first, and to date only, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.
