Jefferson Hammond enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach to the USC men’s tennis program. This is his second season in collegiate tennis after spending 2002 as an administrative assistant for UC Irvine men’s tennis. In addition to his time spent at UCI, Hammond’s tennis experience spans the high school, collegiate and professional levels. As recently as 2001, he was ranked No. 1 in the Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) rankings for men’s 30s singles. Hammond, 31, was the boys varsity tennis coach at University High in Irvine, Calif., for two seasons (2000-01), leading University to two C.I.F. team championships during that time. Following the 2000 championship, he was named the Orange County Register Orange County Coach of the Year. Prior to taking the University head coaching position, Hammond served as the assistant tennis pro at the Pointe Hilton on South Mountain in Phoenix, Ariz. Hammond earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Vermont in 1993, where he played collegiate tennis. It would be difficult to find a collegiate men’s tennis coach with a more successful career than USC’s Dick Leach, who led the Trojans to four national titles in 23 years at the helm of the USC program before announcing his retirement in May of 2002. Following retirement, Leach adopted a new role at USC as emeritus director of men’s tennis. In this position he is responsible for advising athletic director Mike Garrett and Peter Smith on the development of the Trojan tennis program, as well as helping raise funds for USC tennis. Fittingly, Leach captured one last NCAA title in his final season. USC, which went 25-5 in 2001-02, entered the 2002 NCAAs as the No. 11 seed and upset the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 seeds en route to the title. Leach was honored as the 2002 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year and Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Leach retired with 535 career victories, four NCAA team titles (1991, 1993 1994, 2002), two NCAA singles champs (Robert Van’t Hof, ), three NCAA doubles champs (Rick Leach and Tim Pawsat, Rick Leach and Scott Melville, Eric Amend and ) and seven Pac-10 titles (1980, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994). He compiled a steller record of 535-141 (.797) and led his teams to many outstanding seasons while at USC, including a trip to the NCAA Championships in 22 of his 23 years. DICK LEACH Leach played tennis at USC from 1959 to 1961 (under ) and achieved All-American third team honors in Head Coach Emeritus 1961. He received 26 U.S. national rankings in singles and doubles. He and his wife, Sandy, have four children, including sons Rick, a four-year USC All-American (1984-87) and two- time NCAA doubles champion (1986-87), and Jon, a four-time USC All-American and member of three of Leach’s national championship teams (1991, 1993-94). His daughter Mindy was a varsity tennis player at Alabama from 1990-92.

DAVID X. MARKS TENNIS STADIUM

The David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on the USC campus is one of the finest collegiate tennis facilities in the country. Last summer, the stadium underwent renovations, including the addition of 700 chair-back seats replacing the bleachers on the baselines. All five courts were also repainted and lined. The 1,000-seat stadium features five oversized hard courts. Two of the courts are named after famous USC alumni and Wimbledon singles champions, and Stan Smith. The center court is named for USC’s 13 doubles champions — Byron Black, , , , Rick Leach, , , Olmedo, , , Raul Ramirez, and Smith. Underneath the stadium is the beautiful Leonard Andrews Varsity Lounge and Team Room, along with two locker rooms. The locker rooms were recently renovated through a generous gift made by John and Michelle Katnik of Diversified Development. Each lockerroom features the program’s recent conference championship trophies, Hall of Fame walls with past NCAA singles and doubles champions, as well as the men’s and women’s national championship trophies. USC also has what may be the largest tennis scoreboard in the . The Martin Massman Scoreboard — completed just prior to the 1989 season — is a tally board and message center which keeps fans and participants up-to-date on the matches in progress. At the entrance to the stadium is a list of all 16 of the USC men’s national champion years and seven women’s tennis national championships, including a newly-added 2002 for last year’s men’s tennis title squad. The stadium was dedicated in 1973 when former Trojan stars Alex Olmedo, Stan Smith, Dennis Ralston and Bob Lutz held a tennis exhibition. The 1974 men’s NCAA Tournament was held at Marks Stadium (USC finished second).

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 25, 2002) - After capturing USC’s 16th men’s tennis NCAA championship in May, the 2002 Trojan tennis team received something the previous 15 Trojan champions did not - a personal invitation to the White House by President George W. Bush. The team flew to Washington D.C., as one of 10 teams invited to take part in the 2002 NCAA Spring Sports Championship Day hosted at the White House on Tuesday, Sept. 24. After spending Tuesday morning visiting sites such as the U.S. Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Trojans arrived at the White House at 1 p.m. and awaited the arrival of President Bush in the Blue Room. Bush greeted the team and congratulated Leach and the players on their achievement.
