    THE NATION NEEDS NEW YORK Each January, the state Legislature gathers for a six-month session to grapple with the pressing issues of the day and to advance public policy that will make our state a better place in which we live, work, and play. Over the years, New York has set the tone for enacting bold laws to protect the environment, to cut pollution, and to improve the health of our communities and people. In the late 1800s we enacted the forever-wild provision of the state Constitution; in the 1980s we adopted the nation’s first acid rain law and the bottle bill; and, we have the most comprehensive environmental quality review act in the nation. It is truly breathtaking what can be achieved when the Legislature focuses and commits to protecting the environment. The 1993 session is a prime example of what is possible – in that year, agreements were forged to enact the Long Island Pine Barrens Protection Act, the Environmental Protection Fund, and the Clean Air Compliance Act! We chose an image for this year’s cover that depicts all that is at-risk if our leaders fail. For sure we have made enormous progress that we don’t want to lose. But, community character continues to be challenged by overdevelopment, we struggle to provide safe water for drinking, and we have too many people exposed to air pollution that can make them sick. As we bear witness to what is shaping up as the most anti-environment federal government (Congress and the Administration sharing this equally), the question for all New Yorkers is: are our leaders ready to embrace the challenge and demonstrate to the nation how strong environmental laws and standards lead to the progress and prosperity we all need? 2 EPL/Environmental Advocates is one of the first TABLE OF organizations in the nation formed to advocate for the future of a state’s environment and the health of its citizens.

Simultaneously, despite natural gas prices continually dropping over the past 10 years, National Grid has increased their gas prices. National Grid has stated that this is for investment in infrastructure, but as we can see from the moratorium, not much of that extra money made it there. the counties in New York City, and approximately a 7% increase for the Long Island counties.     In response to the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, a coalition of elected officials in New York City released the following statement: “Ostensibly, the role of the Supreme Court is not to make policy, or to implement a political agenda. It’s to determine whether or not the policies and the political agendas enacted by other branches of government are consistent with the Constitution and the laws of the United States. But this narrative simply isn’t true. The Supreme Court has always been a political institution. The Republican Party recognizes this reality and uses aggressive tactics to stack the courts with right-wing ideologues, cultivated in their own parallel legal ecosystem. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has fought to preserve the myth of our apolitical judiciary, unilaterally disarming in the battles that decide which judges are confirmed to the federal bench. This asymmetry is exacerbated by our dysfunctional electoral system. Hundreds of federal judges - including a majority on the Supreme Court - have now been appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote. The result has been catastrophic. A right-wing supermajority now sits on the Supreme Court. The federal judiciary is teeming with hundreds of conservative fanatics appointed by Donald Trump. They are poised to destroy what little remains of abortion access, labor rights, civil rights protections, and social insurance. Not only do these extremist judges threaten more than a century of progressive achievements, they threaten to foreclose the possibility of any future progress under a Democratic administration. Already, the Roberts court has gutted the most progressive elements of the Affordable Care Act, denying Medicaid coverage to millions of poor Americans.
