Primavera Sound is one of those “can’t miss” music festivals. On this edition, will become again an international music capital, with over 200 performances full of emerging talent and a good example of equal gender representation on the festival bill. In this booklet we’re delighted to present the 25 Catalonia- based bands. We hope it will become a useful companion for you when planning your week. We would like to welcome you also to Primavera Pro, the global meeting point for the music industry that we’re sponsoring and invite you to meet all accredited professionals during the “Botifarrada” Primavera Pro Welcome Party, organised by the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies and its internationalisation brand, Catalan Arts. This is a unique opportunity to connect, network and strengthen ties with fellow professionals, and enjoy a soundtrack by three up-and- coming Catalan artists, taking part on the 2019 line-up. Join us on Wednesday 29th May, at 6pm, at the CCCB for some food, wine and music! If you want more information on a particular artist or band, please don’t hesitate to contact them directly, or contact any of our offices –located in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, and Paris– for further assistance.

Agost

POP-ELECTRONIC

“It really sounds like ”, said . “Can’t you see it’s Beach House?”, said dream pop. “You have no idea, it must be ” thundered Shoegaze. Agost sound like all of them because they have layers of sound to give and take from the album they have just released on Hidden Track Records. They have presented it with Heh, christened like the Egyptian god of infinite space, and this alone is the definition that settles the argument about what their music is like: infinite, expansive and divine. agost.bandcamp.com | @agostband | @agost_agost

Albany

URBAN

In a world with avalanches of plans, proposals and places to be, Albany, the smallest yet biggest secret on the national trap scene, asserts herself with sad rhymes that are almost laments. After years wandering the depths of YouTube, the Catalan artist revindicates the right to shut oneself away in ones bedroom, put one’s head under the pillow, and settle the score with ourselves and our ghosts.

Aleesha

URBAN

Born in Ibiza, of British mother and Indonesian father. An explosive combination! At least as far as her music is concerned. She is the coolest in her neighbourhood, the most stylish, the best at social networking… an urban diva. She gives as easily as she takes. Aleesha might upload four tracks on YouTube and take them down that same afternoon. Her music isn’t of the immediate-hit type, it needs to be taken slowly, relished from start to finish. In case it isn’t clear yet: she’s the coolest thing around.

Aliment

PUNK

After two albums released under La Castanya, the Barcelona-based trio takes a step forward with an exciting third album: Brother (2018). New songs with a post-punk scent where Aliment explores their most obscure and intense side. Rhythm focused but never giving up their melodic side, their cocktail of influences goes from post-hardcore totems such as Fugazi to the raw sounds of contemporary bands like Protomartyr. However at Primavera Sound 2019 the band pays tribute to Television Personalities playing some of their hits.

Conttra

ROCK-DISCO

Having a live act so infectious that even the venue staff end up dancing. Conttra, the Barcelona quartet that debuted in 2017 with their eponymous LP, endorse sweat: ours on the dance floor and theirs on stage. Heirs of the stage ecstasy of bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Foals, The Rapture and !!!, those ones that don’t take any match as friendly or a stage as too small. In 2018 they released the EP 2050, which includes the disco-funk track I Got Down On My Knees For You. Never a truer word spoken: at your feet, kiddos. conttra.bandcamp.com | @conttra_ | @conttra | @conttraconttra

Cupido

URBAN-POP

We know each other so well that we even recognise the expression on our faces when we listen to a song and fall in love… The union between Pimp Flaco and Solo Astra has stolen our hearts with just one arrow in the form of a song and a handful of concerts in which trap moves closer to pop and indie snuggles up to urban sounds. We cannot fool you, you can tell immediately, and that’s why they were the band that was chosen to unveil Hermanx, Primavera Labels’ street- cred-genre division. Cupido take aim. We will always be your target.

Dj Coco

DJ

At Primavera Sound there is only one constant: change. And that is why, not even things as important as the traditional closing of the festival, celebrating life with DJ Coco, are sacrosanct. But in fact doesn’t the festival end on Sunday in the Apolo with the last ones standing, and not at the Fòrum? The most agile wrists behind the decks of national indie will celebrate the rite of passage with an added twist: the last will be the first, but for the first time ever the last will really be the last. www.elsegell.com/dj-coco | @diyeicoco | @djcoconista

Dj Rosario & Sama Yax

DJ

This is what we meant by #TheNewNormal: a little less conversation, a little more action… and DJing. On the equalitarian menu served through the Primavera Sound 2019 lineup, the dessert was meant to come from these two in-house chefs, as involved in tech-house and afrobeat as they are in feminist vindications: DJ Rosario and Sama Yax. A promising back2back in which disco, house, indie remixes, and above all music made by women. The is female? Not anymore. The present is female and these two are playing its soundtrack. www.oniricaproduction.com/djrosario | @charkis73 | @djRosario2002 www.mixcloud.com/SamaYax | @sama_yax

Egosex

POP-ELECTRONIC

The word Egosex refers to the seductive knowledge of our most primitive sense of self, the art of being in touch with the divine animal you are and knowing precisely what your intentions are. Comprising of vocalist Wekaforé, guitarist Hug and Percussionist Lluís, the Barcelona-based band classify their music as “trance jungle blues”. Mixing primitive sounds and futurist arrangements to explore topics of spirituality, modern love affairs and politics. www.egosex.net | @egosex_ | @ego_sex | @egosexmusic

Evripidis and his Tragedies

POP

Evripidis and His Tragedies is the alter ego of Evripidis Sabatis, the greek songwriter based in Barcelona. A classic pianist, and a brilliant storyteller composing about long nights, friendship and love. His last record Mina Triti Stin Cantina is the first fully sang on his native tongue, after a sad summer in the Athens post crisis. An album that will delight fans of , Rufus Wainwright, John Grant or Saint Etienne. However at Primavera Sound 2019 he pays tribute to The Magnetic Fields playing some of their hits.

Femnøise

DJ

You only have to go to one of their sessions to realise that Femnøise are selling fire, not smoke. For a start, it is no longer so relevant to know whether the person behind the decks is Isa-bel, Xols or Phosky. The important thing here is that their sessions are like judo combats against all harmful inertias: their mere presence makes any aggressive movement from enemies of equality, of women, of trans, or any non binary person on the current electronic music scene targets for a direct attack. www.oniricaproduction.com/femnoise | @femnoise

At number 39 Ferlandina Street these digger miracles happen. Discos Paradiso is not only a Brigadoon for collectors. It is also a Barcelona hot spot of musical cultural activism. Kelly Kapøwsky

POP-ROCK

The mythomania of nineties television series does not produce monsters, but addictive music. At last year’s Primavera Sound we had Ross From Friends, in 2019 it will be Kelly Kapøwsky’s turn. The charismatic protagonist of Saved By The Bell may lend her name to the band, but the reference that Maite, Eva, Laia, Núria and Made had when imagining the sensations they wanted to transmit with their music was Warpaint. A noble starting point for songs that end up finding their own voice in fluid, nocturnal atmospheres. kellykapowsky.bandcamp.com | @kelly_kapowsky | @kellykapowskytheband | @kelly.kapowsky

Lil Moss

URBAN

One of the names not to miss on the urban music scene in . This is how we should defineLil Moss, the young frontman of Damed Squad, born in Asilah (Morocco) and raised in Catalonia. And this is what he demonstrated on DOHA, his debut solo EP, thanks to a cutting, candid and hypnotic flow and a varied palette that takes on board all genres: trap, vogue, chaâbi marocain, raï, French-touch electronic and Japanese anime are just some of influences he embraces.

María José Llergo

FLAMENCO | SOUL

There are many ways of modernising flamenco music: through the content or the form. María José Llergo is in the second group: she was born in Pozoblanco (Cordoba) but has lived in the Barcelona for 24 years; she learnt to sing in the countryside with her granddad Pepe but studied the violin; and like any other girl of her age, she wears a tracksuit, has a septum piercing and gel nails but also a black Manila shawl and the family jewels. Although she has grown up in the 21st century, she sings as her ancestors did and with the same core of truth.

Me and the Bees

POP

A warm homage to the unbeatable choruses and heavenly harmonies of sunny . A magnet for those allergic to quietness. With Menos mal, their third LP, Me and the Bees consolidates their power trip line up and it keeps the band at the forefront of the Spanish pop scene. Fifteen warm songs that rarely go beyond the two minute mark and that get under your skin making you feel like summer will never end. However at Primavera Sound 2019 the band pays tribute to The Breeders playing some of their hits. meandthebees.bandcamp.com | @themeandthebees | @meandthebeesband | @Me-and-the-bees-163151755674

Mujeres

ROCK

There are women (“mujeres”) in the line up and there’s Mujeres. Its album Un sentimiento importante does honour to its title. Because it’s an anthem that creates a spirit of fraternity and because it is vital that, with so many bands taking themselves so seriously, Yago, Pol and Arnau have a laugh… make us laugh. Because after ten years of fooling around, their uninhibited garage is no longer just a flash in the pan, but a way of life. However this Barcelona band is in the line up this year to pay tribute to Los Saicos playing some of their hits. mujeres.bandcamp.com | @mujeresmujeres | @mujerestheband

Museless

POP-ELECTRONIC

Laura Llopart has so much to offer that we always ask for more. We want her to be anarchically sonic, synaesthesiatically abstract, deeply introspective, conscientiously activist and, yes, sometimes also danceable. But, above all, we want her to be what she wants to be. We want the only filter betweenMuseless and us be synthetic. And we want to know what she has been up to since her album Dichotomic History (2017) that became part of the Barcelona soundscape. But last of all, sincerely: we want her to be our muse forever. www.luup.cat/museless | @Museless_music | @muse.less | @Museless

Odina

POP-FOLK

Halfway between Barcelona and London, Odina could sing her songs on a desert island or in the Arctic Polar Circle. Those are the perks of having an acoustic guitar as instrument of choice. Blanca Romero does not settle for a childlike voice that has a Joanna Newsom-ish ring and icy melodies; she embellishes them even more with subtle winds, choruses that take after the first and even some flashy use of vocoder. And with all these elements she builds up her little song castle in which we’ll surely see her grow. www.odinamusic.com | @odinamusic | @odinamusic | @musicodina

PAVVLA

POP-ELECTRONIC

The passing of time is something so relative that between post adolescence and early adulthood so many things happen that a month can seem like a year... This is what happens with PAVVLA. She started with an acoustic guitar venturing into folk, moved towards darker and more synth terrain on her debut Creatures, and concludes the first stage in her career withSecretly Hoping You Catch Me Looking: strong, risk taking, closer to the morose pop of her point of reference Troye Sivan but, above all, more and more unequivocally PAVVLA. www.luup.cat/pavvla | @pavvla_ | @pavvlamusic

Retirada!

POP-ROCK

Is Retirada! the Barcelona duo that burst onto the scene in 2016 with the EP Victoria | Derrota? Are there really still only two of them? So what is it that we hear on Son, their comeback record of 2019? How can they sound so much like Explosions in the Sky, Mineral, Nueva Vulcano and Los Planetas? And above all why are they still an open secret when it is demonstrated that on their album they multiply to infinity and live they fill any stage with just two instruments and four hands? Retreat? Victory or nothing!

POP | URBAN | FLAMENCO

From the omen (tra, tra) to empowerment, Rosalía always had a vision: to open an unexplored path based on the flamenco tradition but that completely redefines new pop music. This artist from Sant Esteve Sesrovires has not settled with reinventing a conceptual imagery and aesthetic, but has also gone for boundless transcendental experimentation hand in hand with . The Mani-las

ROCK

If you dare to venture into the jungle, at the end of the path are Maika (Makovski), Olaia (Bloom) and Mariana (Pérez) unleashing their raucous riot garage punk: The Mani-las in their natural habitat. This project whose name was chosen by pure and happy coincidence – at concert in, Manila, of course – likes to provoke, to brag, to shout and to pervert both music and words. Take a look at their social media and get ready to have a laugh with the neologisms these three rascals have come up with.

ELECTRONIC

People often use very loosely the term “music lovers”. The word, does however, regain its meaning with people like Susana Hernández aka Ylia, a DJ and producer that could brag about her curriculum. It includes a parallel project of ambient music (Terence), her own record label (Animah Records), a radio programme and alliances with Niño de Elche. But she probably won’t: she will be too busy looking for new musical horizons with her mind firmly set on finding the balance between experimentation and groove. soundcloud.com/ylia | @YliaBeat | @ylia_music | @yyliaa
