A historical reconstruction of the life of Maharani Baiza Bai (1784-1863) allows for investigating concepts of voice, agency, and hegemony of the colonial subject. Through use of a variety of textual materials, including travel narratives and government records, we are able to challenge certain assumptions surrounding the nature of colonial interaction on levels of gender, class, and race. The organizing doctrine of public and private spheres, the Self/Other schism central to theorizing Orientalism, and the colonizer/colonized framework for imperialist rhetoric are the specific themes that will be examined during the course of this thesis. Thus, the goals of this thesis are threefold. Firstly, to construct a history of the Maharani Baiza Bai that uses available texts from the period. Placing the Bai in time by providing brackets of fact and record will help to answer some of the following questions. Who was she? What did she do? What are the organizing tropes against which she is read? Does the historical record provide the opportunity to argue convincingly for evidence of her voice and agency? Secondly, this thesis will identify and theorize the female colonial narrators who record their meetings with Baiza Bai - specifically, Fanny Parks, Emily Eden and Fanny Eden. By directing the gaze back at the narrators we are able to interrogate our colonizing women , placing them witMn a postcolonial framework where the facts of empirical history and the theories of colonial discourse meet. This encompasses delving behind the screen oi purdah and exploring life in the ,%enana, particularly as recorded by the female colonial. Thirdly, this analysis will reexamine and evaluate the nature of imperialism and Orientalism from a gendered perspective. Questions surrounding the female figure as an icon of imperialism and as a sexualized metaphor central to Orientalism should be addressed. Does Orientalism differ 1 Margaret Jolly. The use of enduring binary categories to read and interpret historical texts as a series of dualities: Self/Other, Colonizer/Colonized, Brown/White, Ruler/Subaltern, Man/Woman, Public/Private, has imposed an artificially structured paradigm on an ambiguous series of subject positions. For the purpose of this thesis, the word "stereotrope" has been utilized in reference to these dualities. Stereotrope means a trope or allegory of understanding that has been overused to the point where it has become part of a fixed conceptual framework. Stereotrope extends beyond the notion of a stereotype by challenging not only the content of the metaphor but its inherent binary structure. SPLITTING THE STEREOTROPE 1.1 THE FA TE OF WOMEN AND MELONS Early in the second volume of her memoirs, Wanderings of a Pilgrim in Search of the Picturesque, intrepid traveler Fanny Parks relates a conversation she has with her good friend, the former Maharani of Gwalior, Baiza Bai. The fate of women and of melons is alike. "Whether the melon falls on the knife or the knife on the melon, the melon is the sufferer." We spoke of the severity of the laws of England with respect to married women, how completely by law they are the slaves of their husbands, and how little hope there is of redress. You might as well "Twist a rope of sand," or "Beg a husband of a widow," as urge the men to emancipate the white slaves of England. "Who made the laws?" said her Highness. I looked at her with surprise, knowing she could not be ignorant on the subject. "The men," said I; "Why did the Maharaj ask the question?" "I doubted it," said the Bai, with an arch smile, "since they only allow themselves one wife." "England is so small," I replied, "in comparison with your Highness's Gwalior; if every man were allowed four wives and obliged to keep them separate, the little island could never contain them; they would be obliged to keep the women in vessels off the shore."1 This journal entry, recorded 6 April 1835 in Fathighar, weaves together strands of Orientalism and imperialism to create an intriguingly ambiguous scene in the colonial narrative in readings of gender, race, and class. The binary tropes that are so frequendy used to explain and understand colonial-era texts, which place them in a properly referential historical framework, exist within this conversation, yet in a curiously skewed manner. The organizing doctrines of the public and private spheres, the Self/Other schism central to theorizing Orientalism, and the colonizer/colonized framework for imperialist rhetoric are the 1 Fanny Parks, Wanderings of a Pilgrim in Search of the Picturesque, During Four-and-Twenty Years in the East; with Revelations of Life in the Zenana. These themes have become so pervasively embedded in current readings of history that I have utilized the word "stereotrope" in reference to them. Stereotrope means a trope or allegory of understanding that has been overused to the point where it has become part of a fixed conceptual framework, applied in analysis by many without due consideration. Stereotrope extends beyond the notion of a stereotype by challenging not only the content of the metaphor but its inherent binary structure. While there is certainly much of value to be derived from utilizing these explanatory themes when deconstructing texts, academia has ceased to question the value of these concepts at the root — i.e., as contrasted against primary materials. Instead, the trend has been towards building ever more convoluted arguments concerning secondary and tertiary points of theory that ignore the very subject material under examination. This thesis is an attempt to return to the foundation of theory, i.e., to primary materials, and by challenging these binary stereotropial pairs — what I have referred to as "splitting the stereotrope" — add some further insight to the current reading of Orientalism and imperialism from a feminist, post-colonial perspective. The Narrator The full tide of Mrs. Parks' pubhshing effort, Wanderings of a Pilgrim, in search of the Picturesque, duringfour-and-twentyyears in the Hast; with Revelations of Life in the Zenana, neatly sums up her Orientalist agenda. Fanny Parks, the wife of a customs collector, sailed for India in 1826. She did so with the understanding that she would spend the next twenty-two years of her life in voluntary exile from England for the sake of her husband's career and financial well-being.

The fort was built by Great Maratha Queen Rajmata Ahilya Devi Holkar and her named in 1767 AD. Rani Ahliya Devi was a prolific builder and patron of Hindu Temple, monuments, Palaces in Maheshwar and Indore and throughout the Indian territory pilgrimages. Ahliya Devi Holkar ruled on the Indore State of Malwa Region, and changed the capital to Maheshwar in Narmada river bank. The study indicates that the Narmada river flows from East to west in a straight course through / lineament zone. The Fort had been constructed on the right bank (North Wards) of River. Geologically, the region is occupied by Basaltic Deccan lava flow rocks of multiple layers, belonging to Cretaceous in age. The river Narmada flows between Northwards Vindhyan hillocks and southwards Satpura hills.

On his way to Pune, he had camped in the village of Chaundi in Maharashtra. It was his horses and elephants that Ahilya had admired. “She has something special about her. She would make a good bride for my son, Khanderao,” Malharrao thought. In those days, marriages happened early. 3/23 Off to Indore Ahilya was the daughter of the village head, Mankoji Shinde. She hailed from a shepherd family. In those days, girls were not sent to school. Society considered the role of women as only managing the household and taking care of the family; educating a girl was not given importance. But Ahilya’s father thought differently and taught her to read and write. After Ahilya and Khanderao were married, Ahilya went to Indore, which was in the Malwa province, as the Holkar family’s daughter-in- law. The rest is history. Baji Rao I was a weak man and the real power was exercised by Nana Pharnvis, Prime Minister. Though Nana was a very capable ruler and statesman, yet about the close of his life he had lost that ability. Unfortunately, the Peshwa also did not give him full support. Daulat Rao Sindhia was anxious to occupy Nana's position. He lent a force under a French Commander to Poona in December, 1797 A.D. Nana Pharnvis was defeated and imprisoned in the fort of Ahmadnagar.

    The Third Anglo-Maratha War There were three Anglo-Maratha wars (or Maratha Wars) fought between the late 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century between the British and the Marathas. In the end, the Maratha power was destroyed and British supremacy established. Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817 – 1818) Background and course • After the second Anglo-Maratha war, the Marathas made one last attempt to rebuild their old prestige. • They wanted to retake all their old possessions from the English. • They were also unhappy with the British residents’ interference in their internal matters. • The chief reason for this war was the British conflict with the Pindaris whom the British suspected were being protected by the Marathas. • The Maratha chiefs Peshwa Bajirao II, Malharrao Holkar and Mudhoji II Bhonsle forged a united front against the English. • Daulatrao Shinde, the fourth major Maratha chief was pressured diplomatically to stay away. • But the British victory was swift. Results • The Treaty of Gwalior was signed in 1817 between Shinde and the British, even though he had not been involved in the war. As per this treaty, Shinde gave up Rajasthan to the British. The Rajas of Rajputana remained the Princely States till 1947 after accepting British sovereignty. • The Treaty of Mandasor was signed between the British and the Holkar chief in 1818. An infant was placed on the throne under British guardianship. • The Peshwa surrendered in 1818. He was dethroned and pensioned off to a small estate in Bithur (near Kanpur). Most parts of his territory became part of the Bombay Presidency.

A completely factual examination of the textbooks, with details presented in tabular form below, based on the points mentioned above, however, suggests that the call for the reform of textbooks is not based on any academic, pedagogic or factual detail. Yet since antiquity, South Asia has been one of the world’s most dynamic crossroads, a place where cultures met and exchanged ideas, goods, and populations. The region was the site of the most prolonged and intensive colonial encounter in the form of Britain’s Indian empire, and Indian individuals and ideas entered into long conversations with counterparts in Europe, the Middle East, East and Southeast Asia, and elsewhere. Since India’s independence and partition into two countries in 1947, the region has struggled to overcome poverty, disease, ethnic strife and political conflict. Its three major countries – India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh – have undertaken three distinct experiments in democracy with three radically divergent outcomes. Those countries’ large, important diaspora populations and others have played important roles in these nation’s development, even as the larger world grows more aware of how important South Asia remains, and will become.     Grand Battery Battles in India Part One The Second Anglo-Maratha War The war started as a result of faction fighting in the Maratha Confederacy. Officially, Baji Rao II was the head of the Marathas, but he was under challenge from Doulut Rao Sindhia (Gwalior) and Jaswant Rao Holkar (Indore). Other leaders also fancied their chances including Gaekwar and Ragogee Bhonsla. A civil war broke out which led to the defeat of Baji Rao II’s forces at the Battle of Poona on October 25 1802. He fled into exile under the protection of the British, subsequently signing the Treaty of Bassein in which he ceded territory to the British and agreed to have no external dealings with other powers (notably the French). Wellesley was then determined to support Baji Rao II’s claim to the throne and re-installed him at Poona on May 13 1803. Negotiations opened with the leading contenders for the throne, but with no breakthrough in sight, Wellesley moved against the combined forces of Sindhia and the Raja of Berar. The two Maratha armies were a considerable force to be reckoned with. The Raja of Berar could muster around 10,500 regular infantry and upwards of 40,000 other troops. The Scindia army was around 35,000 strong and commanded by the Hanoverian Pohlmann. Wellesley mustered two armies of his own. In the north was a force under General Lake and in the south a combined force under Wellesley himself. His army consisted of some 11,000 troops, supported by the Hyderabad Contingent of 9,400 and around 5,000 light horse (Mysore and Maratha allies).

The primary goal of the work is to “focus on varying ways in which multiple political actors in colonial India ascribed divine and kingly status to specific political forms and beings” (p. 5). He finds hints of this type of political formulation in political reforms as varied as human rights, education, territorial autonomy, and employment, which he argues reflects the “democratization of divinity” (p. 6). This proves to be a fruitful yet challenging, intellectual undertaking, bridging concerns of nationalist, princely, peasant, colonial, and postcolonial forms of political imagination. It opens up many new areas of inquiry for political theory, the history of religions, and the shared histories of colonialism and anti-colonialism. After an interesting discussion of the title’s debt to the seventeenth-century political theories of Thomas Hobbes, Banerjee situates his analysis firmly within the context of colonial Bengal while gesturing to broader dynamics across India.
