OECD/IMHE Project Supporting the Contribution of Higher Education Institutions to Regional Development Self Evaluation Report: Atlantic Canada, Canada Wade Locke (Memorial University), Elizabeth Beale (Atlantic Provinces Economic Council), Robert Greenwood (Harris Centre, Memorial University), Cyril Farrell (Atlantic Provinces Community College Consortium), Stephen Tomblin (Memorial University), Pierre-Marcel Dejardins (Université de Moncton), Frank Strain (Mount Allison University), and Godfrey Baldacchino (University of Prince Edward Island) December 2006 (Revised March 2007) ii Acknowledgements This self-evaluation report addresses the contribution of higher education institutions (HEIs) to the development of the Atlantic region of Canada. This study was undertaken following the decision of a broad group of partners in Atlantic Canada to join the OECD/IMHE project “Supporting the Contribution of Higher Education Institutions to Regional Development”. Atlantic Canada was one of the last regions, and the only North American region, to enter into this project. It is also one of the largest groups of partners to participate in this OECD project, with engagement from the federal government; four provincial governments, all with separate responsibility for higher education; 17 publicly funded universities; all colleges in the region; and a range of other partners in economic development. As such, it must be appreciated that this report represents a major undertaking in a very short period of time. A research process was put in place to facilitate the completion of this self-evaluation report. The process was multifaceted and consultative in nature, drawing on current data, direct input from HEIs and the perspectives of a broad array of stakeholders across the region. An extensive effort was undertaken to ensure that input was received from all key stakeholders, through surveys completed by HEIs, one-on-one interviews conducted with government officials and focus groups conducted in each province which included a high level of private sector participation. -

Every day at University Settlement the staff, volunteers and Board of Directors work hard to help our community to learn and grow and to enhance the quality of life of the people in the diverse communities we serve. We do that through a diverse range of programs and services offered at our four locations throughout Toronto. We are excited to share with you, through our 2009 Annual Report, just some of the highlights of our last year. During 2009 we faced a City of Toronto strike, the H1N1 virus and the continued impact of the global economic crisis. Whether it was working with the community to clean up Grange Park last summer, or providing information on H1N1, or offering financial management workshops for newcomers, University Settlement and our community confronted the challenges together making it easier to manage. -

Roslyn Kind’s dazzling new concert showcase combines Pop hits, romantic ballads and captivating favorites from Broadway & the movies. She also revisits songs from her first album (newly re-released by Sony’s Broadway Masterworks) alongside new material and personal stories. “I want to take people on an emotional journey with songs that I love and songs I feel I can translate to the audience.” From Cabaret Scenes: Gorgeous to look at, with a magical voice to match, she had the audience at her entrance with “It’s a Beautiful Day.” She then took us on a lovely trip through The Beatles, Leonard Bernstein, Sergio Mendes, and the Bergmans, to name just a few in her hour-long set. Kind is able to pull off the near impossible: an intimacy that is warmly welcomed due to an adorable, sweet, slightly edgy personality, coupled with the confidence of a seasoned performer who knows where her gifts are. So many highlights: “I Can Cook Too”; “All That Jazz”; “It Only Takes a Moment”; encoring with “Can You Read My Mind?” Kind showed a versatility of emotion, insight, and a superb understanding of everything she was enchanting us with. Spending an hour with Roslyn Kind reinforces what critics and audiences have long known; she's simply special. It is evident that little has changed with her since she burst on the nightclub scene at the beginning of her career (which has included success on Broadway, movies and television). Her reputation as a fluent vocalist with clarity of tone gives her a natural, emotional connect on well-chosen songs (and several selections that were mainstays from the past.) Kind achieves all that is required. -

Tom Thomson (1877–1917) is one of Canada’s most famous artists: his landscape paintings of northern Ontario have become iconic artworks, well-known throughout the country and a critical touchstone for Canadian artists. Thomson was passionate about the outdoors, and he was committed to experimenting with new ways to paint landscape. He had several friends who shared these interests, such as A.Y. Jackson (1882–1974), Lawren Harris (1885–1970), and J.E.H. MacDonald (1873–1932); a few years after his premature death, these friends helped establish the Group of Seven, a collection of artists often credited with transforming Canadian art by creating modern depictions of national landscapes. -

CANADIAN ART: The Late 1800’s Canadian artists working in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s painted landscapes in a fairly realistic style. They painted what they saw without expressing any feeling or emotions. This style of painting landscapes with a soft, quiet, tame, and inviting appearance originated in Europe. These landscapes were full of realistic details and natural colours, but they lacked personal expression. Homer Watson John A. Fraser September Afternoon, Eastern At the Rogers Pass, Summit of the Townships 1873 Selkirk Range, B.C. 1886 CANADIAN ART: THE GROUP OF SEVEN The Group of Seven was founded in 1920 to develop a new style of Canadian painting with a distinct Canadian identity. These artists painted what they saw, but added imagination and feeling. They were especially interested in expressing the wild, untamed spirit of the Canadian wilderness in their paintings. The artists often travelled into the wilderness to make sketches in the open air. They wanted to capture the atmosphere, the effects of light, and the spirituality and ruggedness of the northern Canadian landscape. In order to accomplish this, their style was also rugged, expressive, and powerful.
